The Live Action lacks the dialogue between Merry and Kaya where we can understand what is the reason for calling the Pirates and it's different from your theory. Both in the anime and the manga we understand that Usopp is corageous and that is the reason why Luffy and Zoro decide to help him.

Any chance you can do a reaction to "Breaking Bad?" In particular as it relates to Hank's character. I've seen some online discussion and some people believe that Hank has PTSD while others believe that he is merely having panic attacks. I've heard from the laypersons. I would like to hear that a real therapist thinks.

Fun Fact about Usopp: Jacob Romero Gibson (his actor) and Iñaki Godoy (Luffy) both said in a “cast reacts” video that the director had to tell them to tone it down because in scenes they worked together, they were hyping each other up and having too much fun together. 😂

It's interesting how Usopp lies and embellishes stories not just to get attention but as a coping mechanism for the deeper pain inside. The scene with his mom was really heartbreaking, especially the part about "dad coming with the pirates." Also, I love how he gives the crew credit in the final part.

What the Live Action left out of the adaptation is a secondary reason for Usopp's "The pirates are coming" lie is to constantly remind the village of how peaceful life really is. Because everyone in the village knows Usopp's "the pirates are coming" is a lie, it's a daily reminder that pirates are _not_ coming and that everyone is safe. There's also the interesting parallel between Usopp and the villain introduced at the same time: Kuro. Kuro lies for his own self gain, while Usopp lies for the sake of others (reminding the village of their peace, and cheering up Kaya with tall tales).

  • @The_dandy_zombie

    @The_dandy_zombie

Yeah thats a major point lost in his character. The anime/manga never really portrayed his lying as a negative aspect about him, but as a kind act coming from a place of wanting to give the peaceful village some excitement or make a lonely girl smile. It really stinks that it got watered down to the bare bones 'boy who cried wolf' part of Usopps intro

I hadn't really thought about it, but I think Usopp is probably the hardest character to translate from the manga/anime to live action. Even more than Luffy, his characterization is a function of the medium. It is big and dramatic in a cartoonish, slapstick way that I'm not sure works in live action. I think they did a solid job with a great actor and hopefully going forward we see more of what makes him so valuable to the crew in the other versions of the story.

  • @Phillylove100

Solid job? Yeah except for how they took all of his brave moments away and made him extra incompetent. Punching Kuro for disrespecting his dad? Gone. Saving Genzo from Arlong? Gone. His first cannon shot being a bullseye? Gone and replaced with him fumbling all the cannonballs. Usopp defeating Kuro’s first mate? Gone. Usopp’s best moment of struggling with the possibility of taking the cowards way out and choosing to fight anyway against Chew? Gone.

One thing that didn’t seem to come through is that dad is coming with the pirates because he IS a pirate. His father is the sharpshooter on Shanks crew and sailed off with them to find adventure. He is known for always bragging about his son, and how much he loves his family. When Luffy tells Usopp he met his father, he mentions that fact and it’s especially touching for him that is father always talks about him every day.

Actually Ussop is very brave even in the manga. I recently saw a video that explained it better than I have ever been able to articulate before. Ussop is afraid of rational things and completely unafraid of irrational things. As an example there is a scene fairly early in the manga where the crew begins freaking out over a snake, and Ussop just palms it and throws it away saying he used to hunt snakes with his “crew” when he was young. He doesn’t have the same phobias that most people do, his fears are completely valid usually. And it’s him being able to overcome his completely rational fears that make him brave. Another example of what I am talking about was with him vs the fishmen. He is correctly afraid of Chu. Chu is stronger than him. And an important scene that they should have kept in the live action but unfortunately didn’t do was after doing the ketchup fake out, Ussop starts rationalizing himself failing. “Hey guys I’m sorry they got away…. Hey guys I’m sorry I lost, I tried my best.” But he becomes disgusted with himself. At which point he decides to actually push himself and stop being such a coward and restarts his fight with Chu. It’s little things like this that show how brave he actually is. He is terrified and believes he will likely lose, but decides to push on and fight anyways. That’s true bravery.

As someone who strongly relates to Usopp, I'm the type that cares for everyone else and not myself. Just recently, many people I've crossed paths with have suggested that I should think about myself more, so I've started trying to develop a bit more self-respect. I don't hide behind a mask of joy; instead, I conceal myself behind ambiguity. What I mean by this is that I often adopt multiple personalities depending on who I'm talking to, based on what I know about them. Alternatively, I might just wear a stone-cold, emotionless face because the pain from my past cuts deeply, even now, to the point where I'd rather not show any emotion than open myself up by revealing my feelings. Although this has been long erased from my life, thinking about it and sharing it with others who might have had a similar experience or are dealing with something comparable makes me happy.

Usopp definitely got the short end of the stick with this adaptation, even moreso than Sanji. It's a bad sign when this character is treated as a side character in his own introduction arc. So much of Usopp's characterization and development was cut from this adaptation, even his signature cowardliness is downplayed and not given that much focus. In the manga and anime, Usopp is a coward and liar, but when those he cares about are threatened, he stands his ground; Kuro's crew is much bigger and were planning to attack Usopp's whole home village, yet he was prepared to face off against them... with the help of the Straw Hat Pirates, that is. He even gets a moment where he saves Kaya's life and defeats Kuro's second-in-command (who was also cut from the Netflix show). But the biggest let-down for me was seeing his fight against Chu, the Arlong Pirate, play out in live-action. In the manga and anime, like in the Netflix show, Usopp initially spends time running away from Chu, but then pretends to be hit and killed by Chu. However, in the manga and anime, Chu leaves and Usopp initially tries to rough himself up and make it seem like he put up a fight and lost when he returns to the others. He then thinks about how everyone else is putting their lives on the line to help Nami, and he realizes how shameful he's acting. He realizes that now that he's a pirate, he can't just keep weaseling out of confrontations like this. He takes a stand, starts fighting back against Chu, and miraculously manages to come out on top! While Usopp does manage to defeat Chu in a similar fashion in the Netflix show, the all-important character growth for Usopp is completely cut out, so his triumph over Chu loses a lot of its impact. Here's hoping the Netflix live-aciton show will treat Usopp better going forward.

I think the biggest disappointment with his character was cutting his moment in Arlong Park, having him have the chance to run but that meaning letting the fishman go and possibly cause the Strawhats downfall and then ultimately deciding to put his life on the line is one of Usopp's defining moments in the East Blue, I still love the live action but it really was a boon of contention for me that they missed this. I hope they do better for season 2 but there really is no excuse for dropping such an important scene for him.

I’m hoping the route isn’t to antagonize Usopp, because without those character defining moments you mentioned, that got cut, I do wonder how people will truly root for him without knowing the source material. It’s a dangerous game. Given some of the underlying issues and aspects I’m afraid to name.

@@GeorgiaDow Technically, the smoke bombs at the beginning counts as fought all the fishmen single handedly. Also, remember how Zoro and Sanji were both worried about how to defeat the fishmen before the battle? It could have been something in the smoke bomb that nerfed the fishmen. In addition, Captain Usopp defeated the third-in-command (Chu) by himself. The humor in the series is that Captain Usopp is always played off as the weakest character with joke battles which makes him insufferable to people like me. It took a while to understand there is another joke behind the joke. As for the "fought Arlong" part, you gotta remember, Arlong was somewhere else before he appeared inside the building. So, it is possible that Usopp might have thrown a "harmless" smoke bomb at him, or that Arlong might just have inhaled a bit of those smoke thrown at other fishmen. Yeah, I know that the joke behind the joke is kinda of something that is borderline conspiracy theory. Which is why it is okay if people put Usopp as their least favorite. Usopp had been consistently my least favorite for a very long time.

Usopp's such a sad character his pessimism always clashes with Luffy's optimism through out the story. Always when danger occurs Usopp is the first one to turn around and say "Nah uh, we can't do this" even though he knows how strong Luffy, Zorro and Sanji are. He is scared to say "I can't do this". Poor Usopp thinks so little of himself he thinks he can't stand side by side with his friends and match their strength levels. And he lies, looks for excuses to run away. But one thing Usopp doesn't realize is that he is more capable than he thinks. He is an exceptionally good sniper, is smart and creative battle. I love when Usopp starts running with closed eyes and when opens them back up he catches himself automatically helping people in need. He can lie to himself as much as he wants but in the end his inner Warrior/ Hero wins, helps him and his friends to survive.

Hey Georgia! I just wanted to recommend Blue Eye Samurai to you. Every character leans into a recognisable trope, but is given a refreshing amount of realistic dimension, whether it's depth or a more lateral expansion on their characters. I particularly enjoyed this character named "Taigen", as I decided to view him through a wholly empathetic lense. No spoilers, but this antagonist character is a bit of a single minded and proud dummy, but even though you're not supposed to like him, he's subtly made admirable due to his conscious decisions to put his honor above his pride. Though he remains prideful, his commitment to honor starts him out on a sympathetic foot, and puts him on a path of hard earned character development By the end I was beginning to doubt he'd ever been a truly bad person, or just an honorable person misguided by a narrow worldview

It's very interesting to see your analisis of him too! ❤ Also a little spoiler bit but it's also very interesting how a lot of Usopps tales actually turn out to have some truth behind it / something that they encounter. Curous it the effective reason for that will be revealed at some point. 👀

Okay, you surprised me with how in-depth you were able to get with this analysis of Usopp. From the perspective of a fan of the manga and anime, it really felt like most of his character development from the East Blue Saga was left out of the live action series. Still, you hit the nail on the head perfectly. Well, that completes your analyses of the Strawhats from live action season one. The way I see it, there are only three directions you could go with One Piece from here. Either you don't do any more One Piece analyses until live action season two drops (probably about two years from now), you go on to analyze the other major characters outside of the Strawhats (I have to admit that I'd love to hear your thoughts on Koby, Buggy, Garp, Kaya, and others), or you do analyses of the manga/anime version of the Strawhats (as different as the characterization is for most of them, especially in the early series, I admit I would very much enjoy that). I definitely hope to see more One Piece analyses from you soon, but even if it's not for a couple years, I still really enjoyed these videos. I thought about suggesting the new live action Yu Yu Hakusho for you to analyze characters next, but that one diverged so drastically from the original manga and anime series that I can't in good conscience recommend it as a good representation of the story and characters.

Great video as always! I know it's been almost a year since you've uploaded your reaction to "A Silent Voice", but since you've seemed to enjoy it, you should give "Wolf Children" a try. It's about a single mother raising a son and a daughter with vastly different personalities. I believe there's plenty to talk about and analyze, from the challenges of being a parent to the way children are attached to them, how they develop and may change in unexpected ways as they grow older, and how they set their own goals in life. Besides, it's a beautiful film that's filled to the brim with emotional moments and gorgeous scenery. So I highly recommend it. :) If you're looking for something more recent, I recommend "Josee, the Tiger and the Fish". There are some similarities to A Silent Voice at first glance, but it has a very different tone and message. It's not about redemption, but rather about trusting in yourself and opening up to those around you. To enjoy life instead of hiding from it.

INTIMIDATING arms Georgia! Reminiscent of my own pirate costume, when I was in a production of PIRATES OF PENZANCE. Except my vest was black leather with a cord laced up the front. I didn't know Groucho Marx was in this! (Guy with the broom = ) Sometimes untrustworthy people do need a second chance. And sometimes that second chance is like giving them a second bullet because the first one did not quite kill you. = ) And you can't always tell beforehand. So you have to choose to either suck it up and potentially get yet ANOTHER hurt...or not.

The only reason I came to know of Usopp was seeing a trailer to the live action. And I was thinking, wow, there’s really a character like him in the anime? So, I decide to watch the anime, and I’m thinking, welp, I wonder what they’ve missed out in the live action? That is to say, I hope the show creators behind the live action are being really careful and mindful about Usopp. Because as more characters are introduced I’m afraid his character is going to get reduced. And not only that, I feel like he’s going to start receiving a lot more negative fan reaction. But maybe my pessimism is silly, given the actor does a great job, and the LA is giving Usopp another angle that deserves to be fleshed out. I can only hope for the best. I just hope he gets better character defining moments season 2.

You reeeeeeally gotta watch the anime! (the subbed version, of course) and this is coming from someone who doesn't even like anime... but these characters are even more complex than the live action is able to portray. Garp character especially is completely different, he actively tries NOT to capture Luffy and loves his grandson, it's a bit aggravating they changed him so much here.

I learned something about being a liar is.. Liars have the confidence to want to do something they quite haven't done. Most liars especially white liars. Are rooted in the idea I can do something.. Even though I quite haven't. Imagination plays a big role in lying because we live in the feeling of it really happening.
