The Zodiac Killer: A Megyn Kelly Show True Crime Special

It's a Zodiac Killer episode of The Megyn Kelly Show's Hot Crime Summer week. Megyn Kelly is joined by Tom Colbert, investigative journalist and founder of The Case Breakers, to break down the shocking and brutal story of The Zodiac Killer, what's behind the Zodiac "confessions" through calls and letters, the disturbing crimes we know of, DNA and other advances in crime technology, the difference between psychopaths and sociopaths, possible motives, and who Colbert and his team believe the Zodiac Killer was. We also go through other theories about the potential identity of the still-unidentified serial killer.

Megyn, my father was a police officer in Atlanta, and was involved with the child murder cases. We lived in a town south of Atlanta. One of the victims was discovered less than two blocks from our house. My father went to the scene and said that this was another victim. The local police would not speak to him and asked him to leave. There was this territorial mentality between departments back then. The victim was later linked to the murders. I believe that this mentality still exists.

Yes it appears that Truckee Ca. has exactly what you describe regarding the mysterious death of a 16 yr old girl. I think the children of Atlanta did not get the justice they deserved. God rest thier precious souls. We will not forget them. I think there was more than one murderer lose in Atlanta One is in prison and the other or others got away. The dude who caught the East Area Rapist/Origional Night Stalker, Paul Holes said he almost didn't because Orange County DA's office didn't want to give him DNA and was actively trying to stop him from doing the genealogy that caught him. Law enforcement and prosecution officals shouldn't be elected. Their politicians first, law enforcement 2nd. That's why you get uncooperation and being more worried about votes than catching the bad guy.

I was a kid in the SF Bay Area during the Zodiac killings and he put the fear of God in all of us. That and the fact that Kevin Collins disappeared going to school in the Haight without a trace……

I'm British and don't know Megyn Kelly, but I was very impressed with her intelligent, eloquent analysis of the recent Johnny Depp trial. I would love to see her do more true crime - her no nonsense interview approach gets to the point fast. I've subbed in hopes she'll cover more notorious cold case murders like this, she's a superb interviewer. That said, she had her work cut out with this guest! Boy did MK have to keep pinning him down on detail, and bringing him back to the point. For someone with a strong theory about the identity of the Zodiac Killer, he was very low on details and specifics. He couldn't even keep the timeline/dates straight, and went off on so many rambling tangents, I think even Megyn was struggling to follow his narrative! I found him very unconvincing. Megyn blew a hole in his theory, by pointing out the Zodiac Killer was evil and sadistic - but this guy's suspect Gary Post was mentally ill after a serious car wreck. That suggests a different kind of offender. This guy countered that with some obscure, anecdotal stories of animal cruelty he supposedly committed! Megyn also asked, very sensibly, wouldn't the Zodiac Killer have confessed to being him on his death bed? There was no such confession, written or otherwise, from Gary Post, and this guy's claims he told a few people he was the Zodiac, and they swore affidavits to that effect, didn't cut the mustard at all! In the absence of any fingerprints, it seems some hair samples are the only possible way this killer's identity could be revealed. Why hasn't it been done already? She raised an excellent question about why the hair samples from a suspect weren't used to create a DNA profile, and a likely facial image of the killer. This cutting edge genealogy work solved the notorious 1984, cold case Aurora hammer murders by Alex Ewing. If you haven't heard of that case, I urge you to search for documentaries on KZread - the technology that unmasked the killer is utterly mind-blowing! Incidentally, who cares where Jimmy Hoffa's body is? We know he's dead, and the list of suspects is long. It's another shaggy dog story - and this guy is full of them! Such a shame Megyn didn't get a more interesting interviewee - this guy wasn't worth any more than a 4 minute chat! Her short exchange with a cold case detective on the Golden State Killer (Joseph James DeAngelo) was more compelling than the L-O-N-G interview that preceded it! He's right - many suspects can fit a murder circumstantially, but without a concrete link to the crime established by armchair detectives, you cannot believe their theories about the Zodiac Killer.

@@RenataKleinRK You're most welcome! Your reply brought me back to revisit my earlier post. I got it badly wrong, and praised Megyn Kelly unduly. Sadly my faith in Ms Kelly as a true crime journalist was recently shattered, by her appalling, lazy, flabby and feeble interview with John Ramsey. John Ramsey you might recall, is father of the tragic Jonbenet Ramsey, a six year old child found strangled to death by ligature and sexually abused in her own home where she should have been safe, on December 25th/26th 1996. To date, no arrest has been made in that infamous sexually motivated, child strangulation case. The crime has become legend for the corruption and incompetence (but mostly corruption at the highest level), that has let her killer off the hook for 26 years. Jonbenet's parents John and Patsy Ramsey invented a far-fetched 'intruder' story (complete with ridiculous, faked, prop ransom letter), which together with their money and power served its purpose and kept them both out of jail - him as the killer, Patsy as the accomplice in the elaborate cover up of his perverted crime. Megyn Kelly spectacularly failed to challenge John Ramsey, the prime suspect in a world famous, 'unsolved' child murder, even once! Instead Kelly rolled over and gave Ramsey a comfortable, totally uncritical platform for his latest publicity-seeking garbage - his entirely bogus claim that DNA will solve the case. John Ramsey knows it won't - he doesn't want the case solved, because HE killed his daughter Jonbenet - albeit unintentionally - during criminal, high-risk sadistic sexual abuse by asphyxiation with a home-made garrote. Her autopsy (specifically, injuries of various ages/stages of healing to her hymen), uncovered a long history of quote 'chronic, long-term' sexual abuse. As the sole adult male living with Jonbenet, her father John was clearly prime suspect in her serial sexual abuse, and death - he had access and the classic 'MMO' - 'Means, Motive and Opportunity'. The Ramseys sex life ended with Patsy's devastating diagnosis of Stage 4 ovarian cancer in 1993, when she was just 36 years old. Her program of invasive, life-saving medical treatments and drugs ruled out sexual activity, and left her weak, dazed and groggy. John Ramsey exploited his celibate marriage to use daughter Jonbenet as a 'sex surrogate'. Like many paedophiles he was sly, and resisted full intercourse knowing it could identify him personally as the sex abuser. Instead he raped her frequently with fingers and objects (using her as an aid to masturbation). Over time his bedtime sexual abuse of Jonbenet became more sadistic and dangerous, focusing on bondage and asphyxiation torture. Shutting off a consenting adult's oxygen by repeatedly tightening and relaxing a garrote around their throat is risky. Inflicting that torture on a frightened, non-consenting child is Russian roulette. When John Ramsey realised he had gone too far and killed Jonbenet with his elaborately knotted, home fashioned garrote, he threw himself on wife Patsy's mercy to help him cover up his crime and his paedophilia. It was the dirty secret of John Ramsey's child sex abuse, which explains the lengths the couple went to with the 'failed kidnapping' hoax. Patsy worked hard to keep John out of jail, hold onto her marriage and the family she still had, and keep her high-status, privileged lifestyle. A 'Stepford Wife' and cancer survivor, she did not want to lose her Alpha-male husband and protector to a criminal child sex scandal, face the scandal alone, and raising their surviving child 9-year-old son Burke alone as a single parent. So she made a deal with the devil, and chose her husband's liberty, over justice for her heinously abused and strangled daughter. It has been proven far beyond any reasonable doubt that Patsys's hand wrote the fake, 3-page ransom letter. Clearly much of it was dictated to her by John, quoting from his favourite, macho movies 'Dirty Harry', 'Ransom' and 'Speed'. In 1999 the unanimous decision of a grand jury to indict both John and Patsy for child abuse causing the death of Jonbenet, was blocked by corrupt DA Alex Hunter. His intervention stopped the couple being tried in a criminal court, as they 100% should have been (and any ordinary, working class couple in the same situation, undoubtedly would have been). In addition, Hunter made carefully worded public statements, to give the false impression the jury had NOT indicted the Ramseys, but had ruled they had no case to answer - a brazen lie, which John and Patsy Ramsey gleefully repeated to the media at every opportunity. Only following a freedom of information request by dedicated journalists (pursuing the most important function of journalists, establishing truth), was the grand jury's verdict to indict the couple finally, belatedly revealed, a full 14 years later in 2013. It is an outrage that Alex Hunter and the Ramseys were able to falsely claim they had been ruled innocent for fourteen years, knowing full well the men and women of the grand jury were sworn to secrecy and could not publicly contradict their lies! In her recent John Ramsey interview, Megyn Kelly repeated that lie that the grand jury exonerated the Ramseys. What the hell is she playing at? That is a total misrepresentation of the true facts! Kelly is either ignorant of the 2013 revelation that John and Patsy Ramsey absolutely were, 100% BOTH indicted and judged to have a case to answer on the sex killing of their daughter in their home, or she deliberately lied to flatter a suspected child killer. Either way it's not impressive! After her farcical promotional interview with John Ramsey, Megyn Kelly is not worthy of the name 'journalist'.

I'm glad though however that the other high profile killer was finally found the Golden state killer after more than 40 years. Not enough solid details in his answers to questions about why certain obvious investigation points weren’t undertaken by the original detectives. He keeps going back to the “primitive times” answer. Yeah, technology/DNA techniques have advanced things incredibly, but the investigators weren’t apes. Also, not sure why there should be so much resistance to his team’s theories/requests for evidence. Surely, they would be pursued/granted if credible…. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Because he's full of shit. His supposed team of "experts" are nothing more than youtubers. Now, don't get me wrong here. It doesn't take much to be able to solve a crime. Anyone with any common sense can solve a crime. Most youtubers certainly qualify as having average level of common sense, BUT and it's a big but; police have information they will NOT make public to youtubers. Also, let us not forget, people the zodiac attacked survived. Just as people the son of Sam survived. If the zodiac had even been close to being identified the survivors would and could very easily say, "yes, that's the guy. Yes, the guy in that photo looks exactly like the guy who attacked me. " yet, we don't have that in the zodiac case. Also, if life to point out, everyone who survived the son of Sam killing said David Burkawitz was NOT the man who attacked them. They all identified the sons of Sam who lived on king street. Also let us not forget David Burkawitz originally said he was innocent but refused to tell who did the killings or if fear. It was only later they claimed he confessed. Then later they claimed he said multiple people were involved. In my mind the CIA orchestrated the zodiac killings. Let us not forget we do have DNA, not only from the letters and stamps, but also from the watch and the car of the solo female stabbing. I suggest it wasn't one person but several different average looking non descriptive males within the CIA or FBI. If anyone believes the cia and fbi doesn't do this type of shit doesn't know the cia and fbi. Anyway, at the time they were trying to pass a new crime bill. However, the public was adamantly against it. Absolutely raised hell against the passing of this crime bill. Then the zodiac came out. Low and behold the crime bill was passed and the zodiac killings stopped. Just like the patriot act. The public was adamantly against the passing of the patriot act. We fought it tough and nail. Chives tried to pass it 5 times before 9/11. Then supposed terrorists whom actually lived with FBI agents, no shit, they actually lived with fbi agents; take magical planes on a day they somehow knew top secret data about war training games, flew into buildings without leaving a single peice of aircraft behind and somehow they all had magical fuel on board that could melt steel of buildings designed to withstand direct hits by jets and aircraft. Within the same week the patriot act was signed which usurped all American freedoms granted by the constitution. The next time someone tells you soldiers defend freedom, ask them where these soldiers were when the patriot act was signed. Ask them where they were when the constitution was illegaly ratified. All them where they are when every text, phone call, purchase, etc is being listened to. Ask them where they are Americans are being arrested for jan 6. Why does the fbi have the hairs and dna of the zodiac and haven't tested it and ran it against familiar dna database. The cia and fbi did this.

Excellent job Megyn. I’ve followed the Zodiac case for many years. Unlike most, I don’t believe Zodiac was a single person. Rather, Zodiac was a composite of 2-3 killers communicating with each other but working separately. It was a game with each killer trying to one-up each other in the name of Zodiac. My multiple person theory also explains the similarities and also the differences and inconsistencies in the murders. The “2-3 member Zodiac club” of killers (if you’ll accept that term) knew law enforcement would be searching for a single serial killer, not multiple people. When a murder occurred, the others would have an alibi, eliminating them as a “Zodiac” suspect in the minds of police and FBI. The Zodiacs used police investigative methods to their advantage in an atttempt to commit (in their minds) the perfect crime. Anyway, that’s my theory which hasn’t been proven wrong.

Writing so-called true crime bestsellers is big business in itself. Tom Colbert talks about locating the spot where the weapons and masks are buried, so until his team dig them up and prove unequivocally that his suspect is the real culprit by balstic characteristic evidence, I think he should keep this stuff to himself. Or will this turn out to be another huge nothing burger, like all the other theories?
