they did just as he desired....they played the game, rather than solving the crime...caught up in puzzles rather than hard evidence. The lack of evidence sharing of the time further mucked it all up.

Police didn't put the same credence into the ciphers as some in the the general public have, in fact it was police who openly doubted that the letter writer knew anything abut the crimes and said he wouldn't actually put his name in the ciphers. In fact some of the murders attributed to the Zodiac are considered solved cases in their jurisdictions. You need to separate the lore from reality.

I think the work you've done is great, David. But I can't help to come to my own preliminary conclusion. Considering that the first ciphers were so quickly and easily solved, and considering he'd have to be a genius to have written a cipher so difficult such that grand chess masters and expert cryptologists have not solved it, it seems to me that the last ciphers are most likely a bunch of gibberish designed to make law enforcement and others waste time all the while attempting to make himself look smarter than he is. How's that for a run-on sentence.

RedRider2001. I think that it would make sense to write a non-readable note. His handwriting is a clue. The extent of his ego is a clue. The content of each "actual" zodiac letter is a clue to the type of person he is. The hand writing is more than likely done with heavy gloves to make it sloppy but the style is unique to him.

Anyone could write a cypher that would be near impossible to crack. For example, a triangular character to me, would signify the outdoors (like a tree) ergo a farmyard dog that was named Bob so it would equate to the letter B. Well now that I have used one recognisable symbol, I can still call upon a million other memorable characters that could all equal the letter B. A circle would be like a Balloon. A square, a Block, e.t.c, All that you would have to do then is arrange it in a fashion that required a specific setup Like using two mirror's to reverse and flip it or cutting it up into pieces. There are so many different ways to conceal a code that it really isn't hard to understand why this code hasn't been broken. It wasn't designed to become saturated with data, that's why it probably will never be solved. If there was a few thousand strings put through it then it would be easier to break than the nonexistent lock on Pandora's box.

Aaaah, It's obvious that no one of you guys know that this teacher couple only solved the cipher because the Zodiac helped a little bit with tips in his letters to the SanFran Chronicle ;-) It's even stated in the Movie, that's a fact! I'm not saying that it's true cause it's stated in the movie but even if not, it's a fact that the Zodiac did help to solve the first letter

One of the best analyses of the 340 cypher I have seen. Very scientific in approach: Consider a hypothesis for how the cypher works, then test that hypothesis, using statistics as needed. It important to keep a list of hypotheses that have been disproven. The first hypothesis to test is the question of whether or not Z340 contains a message at all, and specifically one written left to right. This presentation gives evidence to support this idea, though not conclusive. Years ago I proposed that the 340 Cypher had been "complexified" by changing several instances of the same symbol (say "circle") into different symbols (e.g. "half filled circle", "solid circle" , etc.) If a scheme can be found to "decomplexify" the cypher, then cracking it may be more manageable.

Hi Chris! Thanks for your comments. I remember your web pages from years ago. In fact it was your transcriptions and statistical analyses of the ciphers that helped pave the way for some of my web-based tools. I gave another presentation in October that expands a bit on the strange features of Z340: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pJmrmteFoaa5Yto.html I'm curious to know what you think of them. Perhaps they are signs of an underlying message. Or maybe signs of gibberish!

Great video on The Zodiac Ciphers David! I'm sure it will inspire a new generation of researchers to work on the Zodiac 340 and hopefully we will come to a successful conclusion.

Mr. Van Eycke has solved the case and apparently he achieved this while never mentioned in dispatch under David Oranchak's list of "Discredited or inconclusive solution attempts."® (Jan.19, 2013) "Jarl Van Eycke had finally beaten the Zodiac killer. Some tinker with model airplanes or tweak fantasy sports lineups; Van Eycke was a different sort. something i noticed is the 340 cipher you have to rotate it 4 ways and each way provides information when rotated, the crosses are selectively placed as a key to know exactly which side to turn to see a new code pattern to decipher.

The my name cipher is quite interesting. The 13 symbols do give A. Leigh. Allen (11 symbols for letters and two symbols for periods/breaks). The number/frequency of symbols match up with the number/frequency of letters and breaks. ALA did go by his middle name.

Did anyone ever consider that the author could have been dyslexic? Dyslexic people are known for being very good at breaking codes and used to actually be recruited previously by the military for that purpose. This could explain the authors interest and knowledge and why cyphers were used in the first place versus just using standard words or riddles. Dyslexic people are also known to be terrible at spelling. The spelling is so bad that it almost seems intentional but it’s also possible it wasn’t.

Could be, but it doesn't seem he was that good in the first place. The only cipher that was clearly solvable was easily solved and was beginner level work and the guy couldn't spell. He wasn't a genius, just knew how to outwit late 60s cops in different jurisdictions in several random murders and then stopped once he got close to being caught. He got spooked, he took a chance and escaped only because the police were incompetent. He wasn't a genius and outwitting 60s cops when there was no DNA only blood typing, very little communication between departments, rudimentary forensics, no motive and little clues. He probably realised he could get more pleasure from the notoriety and people thinking he was a genius.

Aubrey, the spelling is seeminglt because of poor Southern Dialect to a northerner, but absolutely understandable to them of the same dialect...like for instance using the word Flowers in the North. In the South they say "flares" that's the thing with the spellin'.

+David Oranchak Excellent video! Probably the best I've seen on this case. I believe the "+" symbol is the key to unlocking the 340 cipher. That's why Zodiac went through so much to hide the identity of the symbol. Another interesting thing is how quick the Harden's cracked the 408 cipher. In my mind Mr. Harden is the "concerned citizen", and if his handwriting matches that of the Zodiac's and the "concerned citizen"... well, there's your guy. Isn't it weird how Zodiac claims to be "crack proof" even after having his cipher cracked? Strange too how he never went after the Harden's in any way such as by letter or stalking. You would think he would.

Gusttafa I think that's a real possibility. That or-he stepped up his game, knowing the 408 cipher had been cracked. I wonder if the cracking of the 408 had been kept secret they might have kept decoding his ciphers without him knowing. Maybe they could have gotten some clues that way.

its obviously disappointing if it was gibberish that the zodiac wrote because he realized he was not that good at codes because that couple broke it so fast. so he decided to write nonsense symbols so it would make him seem so intelligent thart no one could solve his codes. I hope someone solves it though. it's so frustrating.

@Tristan Lane Welcome to try- YQOFHOJNDKCVSDTSOTBL My legit algorithm designed to (possibly) perplex easy computer type solves. Solution in English please or thematically concordant words this same method. I'm no classical cryptographer.

What if he is doing a multi layer substitution along with reusing characters for different letters than the original? It would be like multi bit encryption and the only way to reverse the product would be through knowing which cipher key to use and in what certain order. Law enforcement botched this along with the media by not only publishing the solution but also highlighting mispelling and how they came to their conclusion. In doing so it gave him a reason to change and a reason to hide specific indicators within the text. Not only would he know the type of cipher he wrote wasn't hard to break but also that they keyed in on his mispelling. So he either devised a total fake to throw people off or he changed methods to make key indicators much harder to detect. He could have intentionally misspelled every word in various unintelligent ways to ensure no one could find a single pattern. He didn't need to know the finally solution because he knew what it was from his original document. He may have never intended for it to be truly broken and it was his way of basically showing power and giving the finger to authorities. He was dead adamant about the papers highlighting his letter to the public in the Stine murder to show law enforcement as being totally incompetent. This seemed to be a game for him to "prove" his was smarter.

Is it possible that the plus signs are rotation points? Meaning you rotate the letters around them in a certain way?

It's like the pattern at the 16 min mark was the key to figuring it out. Shows arrows of how to decipher it... Diagonally down to the right. Wonder how likely those would appear randomly in the correct direction.

I cracked the cipher. It relates to BEETHOVENS 3rd and 9th, BERNADOTTE, ED JOKISCh/THE JOKEr, the Black Dahlia Murder is signed to KIRK, TULLEY and HODEL. BernieSandersZodiacKiller.Com The key symbol is to the Batman #1 issue. The Bat man comes from BATON man, signifying the French Marshall's baton (rivalry with Napoleon). The rEal life Joker was an LAPD officer and abortion rings are the main concurrent theme between this, the Dahlia and the Jack the Ripper murders. The symbolism of 'cutting in half' or 'ripping' is from Beethoven famously ripping his Eroica musical score in half when he heard Napoleon had announced himself Emperor. The zodiac sign is a MUSICAL CODA. There is a reference to King Phillip the FAIR or IRON king, that is why the FAIR names-- farraday, etc. It relates to the Knights Templar, the scandal of the handkerchiefs and the Tower of Nesle. The final signature I deduced is the DLR, german aerospace insitute (see their logo, it's a fit). The poem GARTSON from 1835 holds a major key. Porky Pig, warner Brothers are referenced. Cartoons are the major fixture. There are constellations all over this, particularly above the top line where you see the Big Dipper. There must be an Ursa Major (bear) for Poppa Bear Ed Jokisch. Ed Jokisch became a cop for LA in 1940 and the #1 edition of Batman featured the first appearance of Joker. The Joker's badge on his hat has the lettering 'J O K I S C H' signifying the real joker was Ed Jokisch. That is why you see the Black Dahlia with a permanent smile cut onto her face and Jokisch was the investigator for the killing. Jokisch also did work for the San FRancisco PD about abortion rings. The Tully Monster is the abortion ring symbol. The Tully Monster is a symbol for the Zodiac Killer which is from a south suburb of Chicago. A fossil from a spring was found and it looks like an abortion tool. I think the last 18 letters are saying KIRK, HODEL and BERNIE.

Is it possible it something simpler then this? At 15:08 I'm reading the real letters across and there are a lot of actual words. In the first 2 lines "her, kilt, god, body"

I seem to find myself coming back at this video at some points.I always thought that the + symbol needed to be treated in a different way, and the rest of the cipher just like the 408. That means homophonic substitution I think that's what you call it right. Now the damn + symbol shows up 24 times. That is probably too many for it to be one letter. I mean you can try to place any letter as + it wont work of course and I am ruling out some kind of rearrangements cause I don't think there would be a valid one that would make the + work for one letter but then again you never know someone else will work on that idea...But then again it still seems that the cipher could be split in two and the bottom half be placed on the side you know what I mean.. or maybe in quadrants but I don't know... maybe not.-Now If we search for clues in the Halloween card, by fire by gun by rope by knife is 24 letters as many as the + symbol. Also the fact that BY shows up in the four quadrants kind of makes one think that the Halloween card and the 340 really are connected, can it be random that 4 "By" (one shows up backwards I think though yB) showed up as the cipher was completed. I don't know how many times it would show up on average if you make random rearrangements of the 340. Anyways maybe the + symbols need to be replaced by the ( by gun by fire...) letters. Now I don't know in what order but making it random will of course lead nowhere so you would probably have to replace by fire in the top left quadrant and by gun in the top right and so on. You find a + symbol you make it a B you find the second + you make it a y, find the 3rd + make it an f and so on ... By the end the cipher will have no + symbols. Now maybe the bottom half still needs to be placed on the side for it to make sense or maybe not------.Maybe the fker zodiac said ill remove these letters (b y f I r e b y g u n....) that were once in place of the + symbols when he finished the cipher. and send a card later (the Halloween card) to make it bit different ? more complicated or something.Now obviously I'm not saying this is how it was done... but maybe it is how it was done.Its an idea maybe worth checking out or something...the thing is, shouldn't one be able to find a word in the cipher with homophonic substitution (if that is how to decipher it of course) even withouth having done all the changes I said. Dunno I'm no expert.-----It has not be deciphered in 40 + years come on. Something has to be different or its no cipher and its just gibberish. But come on it cant be gibberish XD...The damn + symbol must be something about it... And the fact that it really does look like it could be split in parts. Most likely the first step we have to take to solve this is to rearrange the cipher,and when we done that, we have to find the key or most likely the keys i think there is 4 keys on this cipher,,and how to apply them in the new cipher. IT COULD BE SOMETHING LIKE- FIRST LINE KEY 4 ,SECOND LINE KEY 2 AND SO ON. i HAVE MADE A LOT OF TRIES WITH THE TOOLS I HAVE NOTHING WORKED. I dont think this cipher is a hoax,and i believe in the next 10 years someone will crack this!

I keep following since couple of years now about this and as I am really interested into coding, programming, puzzle I thought I would give it a try.. I came up with a different hypothesis about the cipher.. I found other type of coincidences which so far no one and no where were discussed.. I looked in the Z408 and from them I thought about .. had a look in to the Z340 and found the same pattern... Would be nice to discuss it.. I am doing everything on pc but I would need more "power" to come up with conclusion.. if you are interested in have a look on my idea let me know, we can then talk private.. Thanks.

30:40 There are other patterns I noticed. Keys on opposite ends like Q - M, X - O, and S - K. I had only guessed the S-K one and was surprised to see that there was a link. It seems he didn't put much thought into generating the symbols. The / looks like the top part of the K. Obviously E and R are blatant. A is a couple of triangles and S. It doesn't look like he did much more than look at a typewriter when coming up with the code.

32:14 David you make the comment that all of the letters lead to E except for C but on the cipher key mailed from "concerned citizen" it shows C as the letter for the backwards E.

The cipher will never be broken. I mean, it might be 'decoded' into what people want to believe it says but the true decoded message will never be revealed. We have no idea how many of those symbols actually represent letters, and since the talk of filler symbols its even more hard to get a proper message from it. Using multiple symbols for the same letters again only shows that it's an unbreakable cipher. I don't know why people are giving this guy so much credit for his cipher though. Anyone can make an unbreakable cipher using the same method. Unless you have the key, you'll never break it. A lot of people don't want to hear this but it's just the truth.

The first cipher had enough 'clues' for it to be broken. This has nothing. There's a chance that every symbol represents the letter A just as much as there's a chance this isn't a true statement.

I don't know. I think there's enough variation within it that it can be cracked if you knew the way in which it was encoded. There's just a lot of ways that it could have been, so it's not unsurprising that it has not yet been solved.

I'm not so sure. I follow their work a bit on one of the forums and I really think they're close. I hope they figure it out. So much work has been put into this thing. Time will tell.

Nice talk. The stuff about primes at the end of the bonus material is very unconvincing, though. About one fifth of the numbers between 1 and 320 are prime, so you'd expect about one fifth of the pluses and one fifth of the B's to be in prime positions. Certainly, the pluses are well short of that mark, but the B's aren't at all: you'd expect about 12/5=2.4 B's in prime positions, and there's one. That's not dramatically fewer than expected. You then go on to estimate the probability of these two properties both happening together, but this is falling into a trap: any combination of properties becomes unlikely if you combine enough properties.

The two halves of the Z340. If you take the middle line as the gibberish line, that is at the end of the Z408m could the bottom be reversed, or mirrored, or both. I look at it and the middle line says something about fold me, as above so below, cut along fold. Mirror up, mirror across, forward reverse.

Let assume that Arthur Lee Allen was the Zodiac, is it possible that writing with his off hand ( ALA was ambidextrous ) could some of these anomalies be attributed to him writing with his off hand ? And if so has that been looked into ?

@DO Are you able to create a subroutine that would bump the Z9W+ONE with Revelation Nine and other applicable data? Here is part of it... ONE with a dot in the letter "O" will imply two separate (maybe three) numerical equations---one based upon addition only and the other based upon the sum of two products. For instance... The word "ONE" (with dot in letter "O") is both thirty-seven and one thousand eighty (three full circles) respectively. The initial letter "Z" is more than just a nickname moniker and placeholder as it also indicates alphabetical numerics. The extra "E" and "N" can also be explained both biblically and from a clock (being the second and fourth encoding). The surface anagram is simple enough and is also a phonetic pun for "WISE ONE" (ONE WIZ). The two basic sets of equations below (utilizing both "O" and "R") (57 + 37)=94=NOVEMBER (31 + 37)=68 (letter "Z" as placeholder)=JULY (57 + 34)=91=SPIRIT=DARKNESS (31 + 34)=65=SEVEN The sums of the two products within the two different sets are... 6462 6432 The letter values cycle through the alphabet for each one (248 and 247 times respectively) and form the letters "N" and "J". The circle cycles through for each at (17.95 and 17.866 respectively) for one hour offset by eighteen degrees between 312 and 342 degrees. The hour difference between (1080 and 1050 degrees) or four (with the potential offset and same for months derived above). Finally, then apply or correct the declination to approximately "N" degrees versus the "R" degrees. It's as far I've gotten with this one tonight.

In the left over letters of the 408 cipher i get "behemoth" wich is Horoscope/Zodiac/Astrological

Should anything be read into the pattern of the backwards letters?

Is the “random pile of books” you drew from only published before 1969?? That would limit what common word sequences Zodiac would have drawn from. Just wondering!

Very interesting. I wonder how much time was spent figuring out what kind of personality that would be inclined to make ciphers and show an interest for puzzles like that. Surly, that must be a better place to start?

It's pretty common if you go to conferences. A lot of it is that he's wearing a lapel mic so, when he looks over his shoulder at his slides, the mic barely picks up his voice so they need to amplify it a lot, and it gets noisy.

I would search library check out records for books on codes and ciphers. Also I would check into military codes and possibilities since it is thought that the zodiac was military.

exactly - the US/UK military developed what we now use every day - the internet - so if you open an image in notepad or word what do you get - a lot of program symbols!

I'm sure you get asked this all the time, but could I ask you to look at my solution to the 340 cipher, and see what you think? I've been interested in the Zodiac ciphers for many years, and recently decided to revisit some of my earlier ideas, and one of them is still very interesting. Awesome, thank you! I'll see if I can get a write-up done tonight. I call it a solution, but it's actually the way I believe the message was originally encoded, and maybe necessary to decode it. Anyway, I'll see if I can get all my images together. Thanks again!

What if the nonsence at the end of the first cipher was a key to break the second one? I bet they considered this possibility, but I would like to know, what they've already tried a what was the result.

I've heard of that idea mentioned before but I can't remember what people have tried along those lines.

Look online for the Marriage Certificate form filled out by Earl Van Best Jr. Is there any doubt that the handwriting belonging to Van Best was the same as the Zodiac?

It is 3 solutions on first 3 rows . They tell a story about other parts in the cipher. add the er to the last column- first row it says Donner going up and Lass backwards. the v shapes are used. a k and a v shape point up in the fourth column. the 9+b in row 2 becomes 11 .the K confirms this as it is the eleventh letter of the alphabet. The big black dot is a- a or c or 1 and 3. The big black dot with a + in it 13. The v next to the m in last row points to the right. In the middle is the black dot with +. Use the black dots above as 1 and 3 to make a date with the d that is in the middle. 1934. The d begins the sequence of letters dob. YR and the big black dot have v shapes pointing at it .This is telling you to use the dot as a year.

Yes, it's possible. People have discussed that idea before but I don't recall what kinds of things they've tried with it.

I can't believe the 340 was solved just now by this guy. Well I can actually believe it after watching his video, but damn it took so long.

You did it after all absolutely genius.. I watched all the the episode’s you think you the z32 is impossible to solve as the z13. ?

The triangles that are open. Because the bottom points are along a line that joins at the outer octagon each side, it could be the points that he sends the crawling vibrating bomb from.

There are a lot of dots, if you connect them all does that add anything?

On the Z13 "MY NAME IS_____" cipher there are two boundary sets of letters... "AEN" "NAM" One simple thing to note is that "MY is the (+) saying "ME"... The first set of three is jumbled and missing "M" The second set of three is missing the letter "E" That is relatively obvious but no less valid to break all the codes associated herein regardless of length and whether or not someone thinks that software is necessary and that the code is too short to be broken. Any manual code or any code whatsoever will be based upon itself in large part and what the experiences are that were in the life of the code-maker. The influences are what we are taught. Just because the outcome may not be what a person likes, does not make the solutions any less accurate or true.

@@MsVanorak It's part of programming code that can be used within other letters, etc. to generate more names or codes like a cipher key. Usually, it is centered, but not always...In this case, the first four and last four are used to verify the center five like a clock.

The first line is talking about victim in the 340 and stop with Lawrence is not ZODIAC

The end of the z340 cipher is backwards. I still think that. B/C I had the beginning down.

It is not an omission where it states... "...ALLTHEIHAVE..." It is an intentional error that helps to solve the last eighteen letters...It is supposed to be... "...ALLTHEYHAVE..." The position is 274 and divided by two for 137...This is to highlight the format of three groups of 136 characters each as an end place marker and to highlight the number 136 as a clue...Thirteen is the sixth prime number. There is another with a double "R" with the following line format... 7 letters "RR" 8 letters This highlights GENESIS and REVELATION and the second "R" will point to those last eighteen letters. The other alleged error with the missing letter "I" is to point out that it is not random. The missing "I" in EXPERENCE is to highlight the removal of one "E" out of the last eighteen. The missing "I" is to correct the last "I" to a "Y". The "M" and "R" are added due to the Rev. Thirteen Eighteen clue. The entire formatting along with the last eighteen letters and errors points to REVELATION THIRTEEN EIGHTEEN. This is not necessarily how I solved the last eighteen, but it will suffice. The anagram is... THE EPITOME. MY REBIRTH.

If you look at every time his sound goes out in morse, it spells out "fix your sound bro." Awesome content though

Towards the end, you mention how if an 8.5x11 sheet of paper is divided into 1/2" squares, then the cipher fills it completely. However, you then say that the cipher was written on 7.25x10.5 paper. These two ideas sort of contradict each other. Just an observation. He could've 'rough drafted' it out on 8.5x11 then wrote the final copy he sent out on the 7.25x10.5 paper.

Yes, you are correct - they are two different observations. I think we can make stronger conclusions about the final paper size than we can about any intermediate draft. It's just peculiar that the cipher lengths conveniently add up to the total number of squares on two 8.5x11 sheets. Maybe it's just a coincidence. But maybe not.

And at the end there is the zodiac symbol and it almost spells out zodiac z-o- triangle(like d)- a,i backwards, k instead of c.

I'm sure there are many people who look like that rough sketch based on the description of a kid who didn't get a great look at the killer and it was at night. Don't put too much faith in eye witness or artist sketch, plenty of serial killers caught by DNA did not resemble their sketches that much.

A few questions.... 1) why is it assumed the three pieces are the same cypher ? 2) are they put together in a certain order for a reason ? Also, given that the third section in each of the sequences that appear seems not to fit the pattern of the other two thirds is there not a chance that one of them is different or complete rubbish ? killers tend not to be mathematical genius' . Further.... killers tend not be genius' so it may well be a simple answer or a different way of looking at it that is required.

I don't know why for some reason i feel like its upside down or thr message should be flipped on the other side. Just looking at it even before deciphering it, maybe that's where the puzzle lies. Anyway who knows.

Backward C is he didn't start at camp within the octagon. If he decided that it was because his temperature needed building up, it would exercise him.

Put an octagon, helix size with Galuut central , then across west fitting the octagons side to end side, find central camps.

The 340, looks like to me as if he/she, is telling a story on why he/she had become the Zodiak Killer. On how well the letters(L, A, V, y, ect., and symbols , Г, ect.), he/she, had to be using them for quite a while since they were very sharp on them, almost like using a template, but not used because of you can see that they were not exactly what you would get out of using a template. His/her handwriting, was very sloppy to where the codes were a lot clearer as like a different person wrote them. I also think you should look into what kind of job(then of that time period or earlier like has been in the military prior to) used those symbols and you could cross reference to your suspects or and employees at those or job(s) that used those symbols. Has anyone looked at 340, what it would look like in a mirror or and upside down to decipher it???

the last line of the 408 is ... "before i meet the limit." It isn't a name it's just the last sentence.

In 2 places it almost says "look" and one of the symbols looks like an eye.

I think the information given at 35:50 about that prime number is the key to solve this puzzle. I have once used a prime-number based method to build up an endless flash-movie, that never repeats. I built a flash consisting of several animations, which all were independent from each other. Each animation, which was part of the whole flash-movie-scene, consisted of a prime number of frames. So the whole flash scene was everytime a bit different, when an animation started over again its animation loop. This way, although each animation part was almost 2 or 3 minutes long, the whole animation with exactly the same scene would repeat after billions of years. You could actually calculate it by multiplying all the prime-number frame numbers of each animation. Now if he took this method, which I used to create an aparently unrepeated flash scene, that would mean, that in the Zodiac code, a certain cipher doesn't represent a certain letter of the alphabet, but it can represent every letter of the alphabet. He must have had a kind of pattern and for each letter he had a different prime number. So he just counted this many ciphers from the last cipher for that certain letter of the alphabet, which came next. This way he could create a wonderful encrypted text, which would always give a mess of ciphers no matter what kind of text you have and no matter which language the text has. Even if the whole text consists of one single letter of the alphabet, you would still get a mess of ciphers. The main question here would be, which pattern did he use and in which order were those ciphers placed? He might have used the first published encoded text as his pattern or maybe he used another pattern. The second question would be, which prime number did he take for each letter? Maybe he used the prime numbers in their normal order, which would give a 2 for A and 3 for B and 5 for C and so on. This method would also explain why the repetition of even letters is higher than the odd ones as explained at 17:17 , because as you sum up only prime numbers, you always get one odd, and the next one even, and one odd again, and so on. So if the amount of all of the ciphers, which he used, which is 73 a prime number, was also represented as the representative of one of the letters of the alphabet AND if he also used the prime number 2 for one of the letters of the alphabet, then chances are, that even ciphers would come up much more often, than the odd ones. If he hadn't used that prime number of 73 for one of the letters of the alphabet AND also didn't use 2 for one of the letters of the alphabet, then you would get a total mess with hardly a repetition of the cipher-clusters. Also if he had used only 73 signs, then he must have used for at least 5 letters a bigger prime number than 73, which would cause, that he actually would add an even number. For example if he uses 89, which is also a prime number, then it would be the same, as if he would count only sixteen ciphers for that letter of the alphabet. (89 - 73 = 16) So that would make, that those 5 numbers would count even numbers, instead of odd numbers let alone a prime number. Hence you would get more of even ciphers. In my opinion it wouldn't make any difference which pattern of the ciphers you take and which numbers you use for wich letter of the alphabet. You could take any pattern and any number for the letters of the alphabet and create the text. After you've done this, you would then have to find out, which letter rpresents which other letter, because by doing this, you would get a text which is coded with the Caesar coding method. This way you could actually solve this puzzle without having the pattern and the numbers-list. But you would need two steps to solve it. I think you should give it a try and let your PC do some work to finally solve this puzzle. I know, that I sometimes don't explain things as good as I should. So if you didn't fully understand how I mean it, I would explain it more detailled, if you want to. Keep up the good work and I hope you will solve that puzzle very soon :-) By the way... the appointment with "the I have killed" might be an evidence, that he was an immigrated German guy, because in German you could just let the word "people" away and write only the counterpart of "the". However, that's just a guess. Once it's solved, we will know what was the truth.

Whatever happened with the lifting of DNA from the stamps and envelopes? Even if this space cadet is dead and gone, they can match the DNA to his next of kin. Did they hit a dead end there as well?
