Most likely but he could be alive my great uncle was born in the 20's he is still alive in his 90's. He is also not in a nursing home but assisted living a bit different so it is possible. My Great Grandparents lived until they were in their 90's so it is possible he still living. My grandmother is still alive in her 90's I could write a book on this really.

The Zodiac was so prideful there is no way he simply decided to "hang it up". He had to have died or something happened to him and, thus, his secret will forever stay with him.

Zodiac is one of the most under-rated movies of the last decade

I was in 4th grade in the area during the zodiac killings. I saw a live news show one morning that supposedly was the zodiac calling in to taunt the press. Trying to go to school knowing he had threatened children worried everyone. The police came to our school to implement a plan in which certain houses around the school had a card in the window showing it to be a safe place to run to if we saw a "strange" person following us. Total hysteria followed for weeks as every kid in school thought they saw a strange man....it completely and permanently damaged my sense of the world. It's never a safe place, no matter what.

It was Arthur Lee Allen. Identified by one of the two surviving witness's. He was about to be indicted the week he died.

@@streetracervti The creepy guy "Bob Vaughn" was never a suspect in the Zodiac case and no evidence has ever been presented to implicate him in the crimes or to indicate that he wrote the Zodiac letters. The scene in itself was truly awesome! The tension was ratchetted up very nicely indeed.

After going through the crime reports, crime scene photos, autopsy reports, etc., I have adopted the tentative hypothesis that there were multiple killers and they weren't the letter writer(s). The serial killer theory developed after the phone call following the BRS crime. But the caller gave incorrect directions from the police department to the crime scene--the same directions that had been broadcast earlier in the ambulance dispatch (the ambulance was not located at the police department). The LHR incident was well known to have occurred because it had been in the papers. There is zero hard evidence that the caller was the person who committed the BRS crime. Plus there has been discussion that the initial report of what was said in that phone call was later altered to include reference to the LHR crime. The BRS crime is a rat's nest of complication. The fact that Ferrin had been involved with two cops, and a whole lot more, should not be dismissed as insignificant. There are commonalities and diffferences between the LHR and BRS crimes. But the LB crime is significantly different from the other three canonical crimes. It happened during daylight. The killer was on foot. He wore a costume. Very significantly he engaged the couple in extended conversation and managed to con them into believing that he only wanted their money and car. The con was entirely unnecessary to enable him to kill them so we can conclude that it was psychologically important to him. The victims were tied. The killer stabbed them. According to Hartnell, when the killer began stabbing Shepard, unlike when he stabbed Hartnell, he went into a frenzy and began trembling. I would suggest that he wasn't trembling from fear but from excitement. He left a message on Hartnell's car door. The behavior of the killer in the LB case indicates that he was a sexual psychopath who derived sexual pleasure from conning, binding and stabbing. That is entirely absent in the other three so-called canonical cases. As you point out, the Stine case is different from the other three. The killer shot a lone man in the head with a single shot (very different from the method used in the first two cases). The killer could certainly have dispatched Mageau that way had he chosen to do so). Stine's wallet was missing. The guns used in the LHR, BRS and Stine cases were all different. When it comes down to it, there is no strong evidence that the the killer(s) and letter writer(s) were the same person(s). Everything written in the letters tying them to the crimes was contained in police reports. The person who called Vallejo police dispatcher Nancy Slover and claimed to be the killer said he used a Luger. That was the weapon listed in the initial police report but it turned out that, after testing of bullet casings, it was determined to have been an entirely different weapon. The real killer would have known what weapon he used. As for pieces of Stine's shirt being included in three letters, there is no conclusive evidence that a piece of Stine's shirt was removed from the crime scene. Toschi said no one noticed that a piece of the shirt had been removed until after the letters containing pieces arrived. That means Pelisssetti and Peda, Toschi and Armstrong (two homicide detectives), an ambulance crew, morgue personnel, the person who logged the shirt into evidence and spread it out to dry in the crime lab and everyone else who saw the shirt in the crime lab between the time of the crime and the mailing of the letters failed to note a gaping hole. It was the job of the homicide detectives and the person logging the shirt into evidence to notice. Importantly, the crime lab was unsecured at night. Anyone working in or visiting the police department could have accessed the shirt. It was common for reporters to wander about the building. If you've seen a photo of the back of the shirt you know that it would be virtually impossible to miss the gaping hole. Interestingly, photos of Stine lying face down on the cab seat (as he was found) and possibly showing the back of his shirt have not been released. The only photos of the crime scene we've seen have been photos taken after Dousette, the ambulance Steward, rolled him over on his back.

Remember it was actually a couple who deciphered the first cipher. They were teacher's who enjoyed doing puzzles. The cops were given the completed cipher by the couple.

My favorite fact about zodiac is the bus threat, where zodiac killer threatened to hijack a schoolbus. For weeks school buses around SF area were given police escorts. And it inspired the school bus hijacking featured in "Dirty Harry."

LordNibbler you've obviously never researched Bruce Davis. He was a Manson family member who was suspected of being the zodiac. There are tons of videos here on KZread about it. Problem w/ this theory is - Bruce Davis had an IQ barely above 85. Zodiac, based on his bomb diagrams, ciphers, some of which remain unsolved yet code breakers say contain msgs, was estimated to have IQ of 140 or higher.

You mention the oft-cited short story and movie about "game". The main connection being drawn for that is the other title "The Hounds of Zaroff". The obvious connection is to the word "SOUND" (anagram of letters five through nine) and to the name "Zaroff". Another oft missed connection is to the "Book of Job" in the KJV that features a character named "Zophar". There is more to those two and the Z13 cipher that leads to an interesting movie term.

These are very "typical" non-mysterious facts, but it was a good effort. Here is something to consider about the "hood" that is part of "Mystery 5". The appearance has typically been described as being "squared off" at the top and had a "Z" symbol on the front (whether jacket or part of the hood). This suggests a few possibilities: 1) There was a type of helmet under or it was cloth over an older style welders helmet. 2) There was a little framework (as it were) squaring the upper portion. 3) There was an old style police, ranger, dress army cap underneath that would do this. The "Z" symbol would have to be either: 1) Professionally sewed on patch from a local shop 2) An iron on decal patch 3) Stenciled on with white paint or other white substance 4) Hand sewn by (most likely female) someone with at least high average sewing skills The mystery is that the "Z" (unless having the resources and having done this many years prior) probably would not have taken that amount of time to prepare (if truly random) unless part of a small or larger group. Hence, the speculation that there was a type of "cult" involved.
