Read more: www.forces.net/news/what-does...
Military precision matters for Armed Forces around the world, but a Yorkshireman considering joining the British Army is slightly more prepared than other new recruits. Twenty-six-year-old Evangelos Marathos Rainey is half American and half Greek, but grew up in Yorkshire and has spent the past nine months as a Presidential Guard in Athens. We went to meet him...

    Mate your not assigned to the guards as you put it. You join the British army of a regiment you choose if you pass the standard for that regiment etc. Guards div then when u pass out it's called the house hold division. In that division is IRISH GUARDS, WELSH GUARDS, SCOTS GUARDS, COLDSTREAM GUARDS and GRENADERER GUARDS. ,The mentioned regiments are foot guards, then you have mounted guards they are THE BLUES AND ROYALS and THE LIFE GUARDS. there you go now you know

    @@para7843 Thanks, thought you signed up to the Army but then the decision was done at a later moment for which Regiment you join. This would mean you ask for a specific service in the Army but if you are turned down for not meeting the standards what do you do, apply for an other unit or is it offered by the recruiting officer?

    @@merttar4935 That was a very thoughtful comment of yours, brother, I am a Serb who lives in the Netherlands and I have only seen Orthodox Turks say such a thing, I have had countless discussions with Turkish friends, coworkers, acquaintances, neighbors etc about how the Serbs fared in the Ottoman empire. Most of the time it would just barely end well because they would try to force this idea on me that my ancestors lived well under the Ottomans and because they think the Ottoman empire was an utopia, this would not go well with me because I felt severely disrespected by this as my direct ancestors were involved in every rebellion against the Ottomans since the 1700s and many of them lost their lives to liberate the Balkans of the Ottomans so this would cause me to become very angry because their unrealistic portrayal of history denied my familial history and identity and made it look like my ancestors rebelled not because they were oppressed but because they were savages so when I express reality and how I would know as my family was deeply rooted in the Serb revolutionary movements this in turn would anger them because it did not fit their utopian narrative of the Ottomans. I have discussed this topic with a lot of Turkish people who live here and most of them were simply unable to fathom the implication of their assumptions and how this enrages Serbs, Bulgarians, Romanians, Greeks, Georgians and also Armenians because it tries to shove an unreal rendering of history down their throat and also forces them to deny their own history so that Hakan or Gokhan or Serhat can fantasize about some utopian Empire which never hurt a fly so imagine my surprise that you are able to understand this despite living in Turkey, good on you brother, we need more people like you who not only know how to use their brain but also know how to self reflect.

    "I wish the UK and Greece shared closer ties and an even closer alliance as they did in the past since they both share similar values. " My friend, UK ruined Greece. Look at WW2, after the defeat of Italy by the Greeks, the Germans offered peace and Greece to keep northern Epiros, however, no British or commonwealth forces were allowed to be stationed in Greece. Greece first wanted to encounter the Germans if Britain send nine fully equipped divisions to help Greece in order to defeat the Germans. However Britain couldn't even send 1 division, Greece obviously rejected this and wanted to remain neutral, not to provoke a German attack. Nonethless Britain send less then 1 division so they wouldn't lose any Mediterranean bases, 4 days later, Hitler angry and intervened. On the end, hunderds of thousends civilians dead, Britain robbed our whole treachery in their so called "liberation" of Greece in 1944 (spoiler: not to liberate Greece, but not to lose another Mediterranean base to the communists). And then lets not start about the Turkish invasion of 1974, where the British did not intervene and actually gave Greek/Cypriot military positions to the Turks for them to know where to bomb with their artillery and planes. Why? Because Cyprus wanted to join Greece and Holy Britain didn't want to lose their colony. If you are real Greek, go read Greek history, and no British propaganda history.

    Honest mistake there, probably should have seen that coming. Higher than regular infantry and if you're in 2Sqn then you'll be at the paratrooper standard with having to go through P-Coy, 2Sqn also acts as a feeder to SFSG much like the Royal Marines and Paras. The 5 Miler death thing only gets more tired and dumb the more it's said, the video was not of their final assessment and was only a part of a warmup, not to mention the instructor was a Royal Marine.

    @Hammody Ahmed I am well aware of your point. I am saying it is not possible. Iraq, Lebanon and Bahrain have a Shia majority while countries like Yemen, Kuwait and Syria have large Shia minorities. What makes you think that these people want to join countries like Egypt with 99,5% Sunni majority?Also countries like Saudi Arabia,Kuwait and Bahrain are extremely rich. Why would they want to join poor countries like Yemen and Libya and share their wealth? As for the Kurds,there are 17 million of them in Turkey and 10 million in Iran. Countries that you probably don't want to join the new arab state. Will the Kurds of Iraq and Syria prefer to join a country that will oppress them as much as Turkey does nowadays or create their own state, where they are the majority and make the calls? Just food for thought.

    what the evzones are wearing is if you look at it closely, is almost medieval. Evzones are wearing hose which was common for men in Rennaisance and Medieval times, and the fustanella is just an extension of the tunic. Just have a look at the way men dressed in Tudor England or rennaisance Italy, Its almost the same. That indicates that the clothing of the Evzones has roots in Medieval Europe (Byzantium).

  • @buzuxi

    @buzuxi

    As much as many like to ridicule the fustanella as feminine, warriors have tended to wear tunic with possible metal armor at the knee or above the knee. Just look at the hoplite warriors of ancient Greece or Roman empire art and iconography if military persons. Trousers limits your mobility in hand to hand combat especially in mountainous rocky terrain.
