The X-Men Films Should Have Learned THIS From The Animated Series
Ойын-сауық
Marvel's X-Men have had a storied history from their initial appearance in the comics through an animated series, and multiple feature films. Though X-Men the Animated series had some of the best story arcs of any other medium. This is by far the best episode of X-Men the Animated Series

My favorite part of this arc is how before the Phoenix elaborates that everyone can give a little of their life to resurrect Jean, Cyclops and Wolverine fight over who gets to die to bring her back, which is just a hilariously perfect summation of their dynamic.

And then the Phoenix basically tells them "Hey, it doesn't have to just be you two. What about the rest?" And the whole group step straight up, again showing us the X-Men as what they're MEANT to be, a team/found family.
My favorite episode of the series is "Bloodline", in which Nightcrawler (one my favorite x-men in the comics, as well my favorite super hero, followed by Spider Man and Flash) discovers that Mystique is his mother. The interactions between Kurt and Mystique are very emotional and highlights Kurt kindness and compassion, always refusing to let hate corrupt him and still trying to reach the humanity in others, specially villains like Mystique. Nightcrawler may look like demon, but he has the soul of angel.

X-Men the animated series did Kurt and Hank (Nightcrawler and Beast) to absolute perfection. I loved Kurt's deep and abiding faith and how he leans on that to make it through tough times. And to the show's credit they didn't downplay or ignore it, they leaned into that showed him as the man of conviction and forgiveness he is. I also loved how they captured the tragic element of Hank McCoy's character. Hank is one of the great minds of his time, but because of his mutation he's basically ostracized. We really did get to see that and it was great, because that's part of what makes Beast so compelling.

100% agree. Serialized storytelling always works best for X-Men, since it allows more opportunity for character development for such a relatively large ensemble cast. With the movies, we really didn't know any of the characters except for Wolverine. Granted, I personally feel like Cyclops wasn't shown to be the rich, multifaceted character he is in the comics, and Jean Grey, arguably the most powerful member of the team, did little more than faint and scream Scott's name in TAS. However, the Phoenix and Dark Phoenix Sagas finally gave the characters the justice they were missing for much of the series. For me, we could skip the live action movies and just focus on quality X-Men animated series going forward, but I know that won't happen lol.

What? No credit to Fox Kids president, Margaret Loesch??? She's the main reason X-MenTAS & that entire Fox Kids block was so badass. SHE fought tooth & nail for that series. The show's creators/producers Eric & Julia Lewald & Larry Houston will tell you. If it were up to Haim Saban, the show would've lacked that source material integrity & arc-style storytelling as Haim's primary goal was to inject some totally unrelated crap (like a Wolverine mobile) to help sell toys. Stan Lee apparently wanted to do an opening narration and end each episode with a "lesson" to be learned from it, which he had done throughout the Marvel cartoons in the 70s/80s (including X-Men's '89 pilot Pryde of the X-Men). I feel like passing on this was a smart idea, as it was better let the viewer determine each episode's meaning for themselves and to show them the respect of trusting them to follow the string of events without being hand held by a narrator. That and the creators even said that the show was more rooted in the Claremont run of the X-Men, and stylistically in Jim Lee's '90s X-Men revamp - Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's run on the X-Men was good and all, but it was never the gigantic property it is now until Claremont and Len Wein got involved. ALSO: This might be bold but I actually prefer the Rogue vs. Gladiator fight in the Trial by Combat in the Dark Phoenix saga over the Colossus vs. Gladiator fight of the comics. I don't know if its the that they both could fly that made the faceoff more epic, or the fact that Gladiator - and probably the viewer as well - underestimates Rogue to the point that its shocking how well she almost stalemates him. Rogue got a MAJOR upgrade in the Animated Series and I'm here for it.

In my opinion, One of the main issues with the movies is that they are unsure of themselves, Ether as a series or even as separate movies, They try many things at once as if they want to see what sticks Which eventually made them fell very incoherent and short sighted Side note: On the other hand the movie Logan was very committed and sure of itself, didn't try to do many different things at once, but everything it did, it did well, And guess what, it's the best x-men movie!
Not only is this animated series the best X-Men reference to use but the voice actors gave them life! I love my X-Men! 🖤☮️☯️🥰🥰🥰
Yep this was the X-Men series that me and a lot of my friends while we were serving in the military. It got us to collecting comic books something I do to this day.
THANK YOU for saying the core of The Dark Phoenix Saga is the relationship between Jean and Cyclops. As a big fan of the central couple of the X-Men, I'm shocked at how often other fans miss this key fact. The ensemble is always important, but in every story, one or two characters always take center stage. In The Dark Phoenix Saga, it's Jean and Cyclops. And, yes, the best "episode" of X-Men The Animated Series has to be a story arc. That's just how the show works.
I grew up in a really small town in the 90s, so buying comic books wasn't an option - no one sold them. So, faithfully adapted shows like X-Men, Spider-Man and Batman are the bedrock and foundation of my love for Marvel and superheroes in general. I am really grateful for their honest efforts to bring these stories to life.
How is there no mention of the theme tune?! It's easily the most classic and catchy of any tv show, and it's still being used in the MCU movies!

The Final Solution, Season 1 finale. The X-Men learn the full extent of the Sentinel threat, and attack their base. There's a scene where each member has to choose weather or not they wish to fight this mission. Gambit is the holdout, but Wolverine convinces him by being vulnerable in front of the team for the first time by telling him how much it means to him to be an X-Man. Great drama, stakes, action, writing....the best episode. Best quote from the episode. "The brave are always the first to die." - Magneto.
This was and still is one of my all time favorite comic runs and the fact that it is so well adapted was just the icing on the cake. I completely agree that x-men’s ability to tell serialized stories set it head and shoulders above most other 90’s cartoons. But personally the run where bishop keeps messing with the timeline that culminates in all the most powerful psychics defeating apocalypse in the axis of time will always be my favorite.

I became a Marvel fan and became interested in comic books because of the stories told and the Phoenix saga blew my mind and is a core memory when it comes to cartoons.
Man this show was so good. Serialized stories were almost unheard of back then, they did it brilliantly. In fact I can only remember Batman TAS had some continuity and callbacks, and some GI Joe special episodes that were the exception (the Serpentor saga).
Batman The Animated Series might have been the better show and has some of the best versions of those characters with definitive portrayals of Batman and the Joker But in my opinion X-Men The Animated Series is probably the more important show
LMAO I used to just shake my head and walk away, when someone would complain about Jean's many resurrections (and inevitably the attempted comparison to *every* comics character not staying dead). But now, i just tell them, that if they want to know the difference, just go to the library, and research the meaning of what a *"Phoenix"* is.
Great video.
Actually my favorite episodes were the ones that adapted "The Phalanx Covenant" comic. It was awesome and it really instilled a sense of paranoia about who was human and who was infected in a race against time to both stop The Phalanx and prevent mutants from being assimilated. The fact it forces a rag-tag alliance between Hank, Sinister, and Magneto is a highlight. It was basically "The Thing" but for kids.
I always preferred X-Men Evolution. It emphasized the "Gifted Youngsters" aspect better for my money while streamlining some of the bonkers continuity of the comics
This show needs to be released on Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray. Just imagine the artwork for the covers. Plus it could even get a special box set for each series and limited edition steelbooks that have this cool embossing.
As a x-men 92 fan Ioved your video!👍👍
The first two episodes and Dark Phoenix Saga were my favorites.
I loved all the stuff with Morph
It was heartwarming that they gave a part of their life force to let her live. That was great deviation choice on the part of the writing staff.
I loved all those X-men animated series. I use to video tape them while I was at work and rush home to watch them.
I remember watching The Phoenix Saga back in 96. Woo great 5 part episodes that well illustrated what happened in the comics. Arguably the best episodes in the X-MEN TAS.
Dude you've just beautifully expressed why I've been so frustrated with the movies. As X-Men was among my top 3 favourite things to watch growing up when I heard about the movie that would be made I was beyond excited. But was disappointed & frustrated by how the amazing story of these heroes was told on the big screen. Would love to see an x-men movie that does the characters' stories & their bond justice in my lifetime.
I agree. This was my favorite series as a child that got me into Marvel Comics in the first place. I was born in 1991 and got into it watching the re-runs on Fox Kids during the late 90s and early 2000s. My favorite arc was Beyond Good and Evil.
The funny thing to me with the movies is that they hired the SAME guy who wrote X-3 to write DarkPhoenix . So he HAD the chance to redeem himself...and still wet the bed
So many classic episodes
The 90's was 100% the best years for the X-Men and I'm glad I grew up during that era.
I love how every time this video pops up in my feed the title is different
The animation could be a little wonky, and the dialog/delivery often hammy/cheesy (lots of chewing scenery), but it _worked_, most likely because of solid writing. So many thoughtful moments and pieces that didn’t try and talk down to its audience or dumb things down, which made the show great
This cartoon was my introduction to Marvel! Still a fav of mine 😎
I would rank 'Graduation Day' as #1. The last season had some art style changes that some disagreed with but that didn't interfere with a tearful, heartfelt farewell to professor Charles Xavier, or the crisis of soul that makes Magneto throw away the chance to fight the war he's always called for. In general this is probably the best animated depiction of Magneto, as he's at his most sympathetic here and will team up with the X-Men whenever there's an enemy who directly threatens mutants as well as humans such as Apocalypse, Mr. Sinister or Master Mold.

I liked the one with Nightcrawler. I don't think religious faith was ever portrayed better on television than that episode.
i rewatched this a few months ago and it was amazing ...
I'm 47 now... I don't remember seeing these episodes at all, yet being a faithful watcher as a kid. Gonna hafta revisit it on Disney now.
Many thanks for the kind words, Brian. Making good comics stories work on TV was always a terrific challenge. It's gratifying to discover that some viewers got what we were trying to do. ERIC LEWALD, Showrunner, X-Men:TAS.
I always loved the cartoon's Days of Future Past with the Sentinals. It was the first time I read the comic and then saw it in the show and it was just about as cool as I thought it should be.
was a gift!
As you mentioned, the cartoon breaks it into two parts - Phoenix Saga (which introduces complex cosmic concepts like the Phoenix and the Shi'ar), and Dark Phoenix Saga (which introduces the Inner Circle/Hellfire Club, as well as bringing back the Shi'ar and Phoenix into a cohesive narrative with the Inner Circle/Hellfire Club). If the studio really wants to do this story properly, they shouldn't be afraid to make two movies, because otherwise, they're going to be rushing things and leaving things out.

Two movies with another connected film between them to let the Phoenix breath and develop before the inevitable heel turn

@@comiccaperproductions I was going to say that a trilogy is too big of a risk from a monetary standpoint, but X-Men are fully owned by Disney now, so... infinite money.
I loved X-Men the animated series! I think it is far better than ANY of the X-Men movies. You were emotionally invested in the characters and knew their backgrounds and foibles. I have no idea why they didn't just adapt the animated TV series to the big screen and follow the plot line faithfully. It could have been glorious!
Yes it is. Its animation and sound doesn't really hold up but the story does
I associate the costumes and character traits of all the main X-Men characters in the show to be the quintessential portrayals.
