How Batman Beyond Created One Of The Best Batman Stories Ever

Ойын-сауық

Batman has been a staple of Superhero animation. Batman the Animated Series is considered one of the best animated shows of all time, but Batman Beyond created one of the best Batman stories ever made. Batman Beyond can sometimes be overlooked due to the success of Batman TAS, but still hold a place as some of fan's favorite episodes.

This episode has one of my favourite Batman lines ever. After the reveal of Ra's is Talia's body he mentions Ra's will do anything to cheat death. He then says "I take it back, you don't cheat death, you wimper in fear of it." That line hits so damn hard.

I love the line used in another episode where Bruce opens an elevator door and find a villain with a flame thrower pointed at him. The old hero asks "Who the hell are you?" and the man says "Your worst nightmare'" Bruce says "You have No idea what my dreams are like."

Since Terry turns out to, essentially, be a clone of Bruce, I'm not sure it's a healthy relationship. He's more successful with Terry than any of the other kids when it comes to making a new Batman, but even Terry says that's a curse.

  • @MagnaDrake

In Beyond he's had 2 Robins, 1 Batgirl, and several decades of time to reflect. At this point we can safely assume he knows his faults and how to be better from it. For the clone part, technically Terry is not a clone, but a surrogate son, and to be fair for Bruce, he wasn't the one who did the plan. He might realize about it somewhere along the line, but I don't think he knew about the situation when he first met Terry.

Or a videogame in the style of the Arkham games. Those games go to some twisted interpretations of the villains, and Batman Beyond already has disturbing villains. Further adding to the genius of the opening scene: at the time this episode was in production, there *was* a Batman Broadway musical in the works, with longtime Meat Loaf songwriter Jim Steinman composing the score. It languished in development hell for years before production was finally cancelled in 2005. If you're curious as to how it might have sounded, one of its songs ("In The Land Of The Pig, The Butcher Is King") eventually wound up on Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell III.

the eggbaby is also my favorite episode. while it's not perfect, it's a really funny episode that makes this somewhat common plotline really standout due to the the incredible line delivery, and amount of seriousness given to it while not taking itself overly serious. Bruce's "Why is this my life and why do i care?" vibe he has throughout this episode is hilarious, along with the jokes. one of my favorite lines is when terry leaves the robotic egg doll in the dumpster, in order to try and deal with the villain of the week, just a trio of jewel thieves, but it's an old female mobster and her two boys which are just super hilarious, when they mangae to get away terry jotices the dumpster he put the eggbaby in is being picked up by a vleaning crew and avout to be dumped into the back of the truck. he dives in, takes the baby and flies off. what makes this hilarious is the dialogue that follows from the two garbage collectors maning the truck. "Was that the Batman? DUMPSTER DIVING" to which his partner responds in a very deadpan tone "A man's gotta eat".

I think this episode is so outstanding is it’s focus on the core of Batman: tragedy. Original beginning: tragedy of Wayne parents dying Original ending: Batman using a gun and giving up the cowl Beyond beginning: Terry’s father being murdered Episode beginning: Bruce reminiscing about prior loves Episode ending: Bruce wishing Talia: *”Rest in peace…beloved.”* Such a bittersweet ending considering Talia most often referred to Bruce as “beloved”.

One of my favorite episodes man. “I’m sorry I never met her, the real Talia.” “She was a very special woman.” “The special woman?” “You going on patrol sometime tonight?” “See you in the morning.” “Rest well beloved.”

I always assumed BB was DC’s answer to Spider-Man 2099. Yes, there were more 2099 series’ than just SM, but none of them have had the legs that SM 2099 has enjoyed. Honestly, I think that your summation of BB being a SM-inspired story makes me appreciate BB even more now, and explains why I resonated with it so much. SM, especially the animated 90s cartoon version, was and still is my favorite superhero, with the season 1 Batman TAS being a close second. Slap those two together, and you get Batman Beyond 🤷🏻‍♂️ lol

Funny story actually. You know that underrated series Spider-man Unlimited? A kinda continuation of Spider-man TAS? Yeah; that was originally going to be a SM 2099 show. But the network and writers had to change it up because of the success of.... guess what? Batman Beyond. Crazy, right? A Batman show that borrows heavily from Spider-Man, being indirectly responsible for stopping a Spider-Man show because the writers didn't want to be accused of ripping off the show that was already ripping them off.

I love this episode- the truly sad goodbye to a life loved and lived well but that truly had to come to an end. No matter how many proteges Bruce trained, he always wanted to stand beside them...until he couldn't. This episode takes the truly symbiotic (and if you've read the comics, symbolic) relationship between Terry and Bruce and looks at what it could have been if they were a duo. Besides, there was never any real danger- we all know that villains are...... "A superstitious cowardly looooot!" "They plan and plot but they always get caught!" "Their evil schemes will come to naught! "A superstitious cowardly looooot!"

Batman Beyond did the super hero mentor relationship extremely well, and that's the main reason why Batman Beyond was as memorable as it was. It was the most respectable 'passing of the torch' stories of it's time, and definitely more respectful than a lot of media that's come out in recent years.

I know it's not the strongest one of all, but it's very impressive because of all the things it can do. This episode alone should have been made into a 1.5 hour movie instead of a 22 minute episode. The plot, the emotional stake, the emotional journey of Batman, the villain are all perfect. How Ra's manage to possess Talia's body deserve a 15 minutes backstory. Batman's realization of how being young again is unnatural should've been made into a character arc. Instead of immediately, there should've been a process of him arriving at that realization. There should've been a choice Bruce had to make to either keep his youth or destroy the Lazarus Pit.

See as good as this episode was (and watching Bruce and Terry kick ass together is always good), Epilogue (whilst technically a Justice League episode) was the best Batman Beyond episode ever. Terry finding out the whole back story and what Waller had done to ensure there was always a Batman, and watching Bruce just sitting on the swing holding Ace's hand as she died, definitely made it onto my top Batman moments along with the Jokers eulogy monologue from BTAS, Batman singing for Circe to get Wonder Woman out of pig mode and any moment he uses the phrase "So thats what that feels like!" whenever someone does to him what he usually does to Jim Gordon lol

Scrolling through past lovers he sees Barbara Gordon. Mixed with Bruce Timm's Killing Joke adaptation where they added a superfluous sex scene between the two, it's a little weird how into the idea he was of a Barbara/Bruce ship. Because if that happened then he basically groomed her. Taking a young woman and training her to keep a secret identity and life and eventually dating her.

  • @fangsabre

    @fangsabre

I mean technically you could say that he groomed all the Robin's that way, but I don't think he intentionally groomed her with the intent on having a sexual or romantic relationship. That's not to say that the relationship isn't at least a little yikes since it is at the least analogous to a college student getting with a professor they idolize. The power imbalance makes things a bit yuck.

Fantastic video essay. I'd never considered the Spider-Man parallels despite being a huge spidey fan! Even having done a recent 90s Spider-Man and Batman Beyond rewatch! Mind absolutely blown. Also, please do all of the future videos you just mentioned. Do we have to choose?! But I'd start with Superman. That show didn't have quite as much focus as Batman did, to me. It was strong, but not iconic, and I'd love for you to delve into that aspect a bit. Why is Batman TAS iconic, an A+ timeless show, but Superman was more like a B+, good but not history-making show? Or am I underrating it? Would love your analysis on that angle.
