I think the situation is quite simple. Someone asked him to draw a character he knows nothing about. He googled the character, this thing showed up. Instead of using multiple references to gather data and visual motifs about the character, he just used this one image as a word for word reference. Also, if someone's paying 200bucks for a commission, this isn't the quality of skill one should get, even though the artist has a big 'brand' behind them.

You are right. He is a lazy artist and he is not a good artist. I too am both. But i could easily get multiple reference images of the character, some reference poses from some random model and then create a well framed, well posed, well shaded Mikasa Ackerman in an generic anime style without copying anything directly. The fact that he couldn't shows a serious lack of dedication of any sort.

Creator meaning that he was the one who created the original characters, who they are and what they look like, but in his own drawing style which is not the one of the final production. Also he is the one that created the base of the story, the setting and what the basic dynamic or formula of the show would be, all in a general way. He probably was the one who pitched and sold the shows to Nickelodeon. He's director. He didn't create the final art style of the show. He didn't write every episode script if he wrote any. He direct and supervise every department. He probably guides the screen-writing team, and takes general decisions. Also he's executive producer, so his role is also making sure they have the money and resources to make the production possible. His role is basically beign the one that had the initial ideas, getting the money and taking decisions when in doubt. Is a less creative role than most people believe. Also his name is bigger in the initial credits, but in the IMDB you can actually check there's co-creators. It's also interesting to check art directors, screenwriting crew and such. There are many people involved for any show or film to become a reality, yet we tend to remember just one name.

Being an introvert isn't selfish. It's just a thing where you get energy from spending time alone rather than with others. I'm an introvert, I don't want to be though people take it as I'm conceited, I heard the selfish part from teachers, from uncles and aunts, my mom sheltered me for that reason and other people took it as she was spoiling me. That is why she's like that, I heard it a lot, mom used to say, don't pay attention to them everyone marches at the beat of their own drum. People don't get how hard it is to be this way. For him, the creator of kids' content to call all of us selfish, is as wromg as those uncles and aunts of my past.

I used to do tracing a lot when I was little, that's why I'm (probably) able to tell if something is traced or not. There are so many weird details in his drawing that wouldn't be there if he weren't looking at the original picture - the space between two fingers, strands of hair in certain places, the shape of the fold on the scarf... you can also see that he was so lazy that it's the ONLY "reference" he used and he didn't even look at the details, because he simply doesn't understand the gear she's wearing and straight up doesn't draw a part of the gear that's visible almost everytime, but not so much in this picture (strap on the chest). The stuff he made just shows his lack of skills, where he doesn't depend on his own abilities and just straight up copies everything without knowing basic anatomy while thinking that's the profit. Look, using reference is okay - you can look at references of this pose, you can get inspired by the lighting or color scheme, but if someone commisions you to draw Mikasa and you straight up go to Google, type "Mikasa fanart" and draw that... that shows not only how lazy and unprofessional you are, but also your lack of imagination and creativity. (I'm not a professional, especially in this industry and in drawing/painting fanarts, so sorry for sounding like a cocky know-it-all!)

I find it so weird to see Tara Strong and Butch Hartman together in the same room because their personalities are so opposite to each other. Butch is Butch while Tara is a very smart, charismatic, and respectful voice actress. I watched some of her videos and man she's so passionate that she even has each of her character's personalities memorized. She also gives off a kind and very mature vibe whenever she speaks. There's just something so charming about her. Which is why I find it so strange how opposite she is to Butch.

@@MohammedAgbadi Well he kinda comes across as a less technically skilled John K(not gonna unpack what’s going on with that dude). While John K was an insufferable “perfectionist” and a bit cocky he had at lest consistency in his style. Butch just lazily doodles and charges $200 under the guise of being a “renowned creator” of some average nicktoons. If we go by just nicktoons I feel Hey Arnold and Avatar were waaaay more renowned in storytelling and art direction.

Sadly name recognition matters a lot more than how skilled the artist is. I've seen a lot of very small artists who are very good but barely get any commissions. While there's a lot of much bigger artists who aren't as skilled and charge way more and get tons of commissions

the real issue with Hartman is the art doesn't match the price, right? cuz it looked like he didn't actually trace, rather he was referencing another artist's work... which is something I'm doing too (albeit not 1:1 scale like he is) I tried "drawing" reference-free for about a year and I felt like I was legit literally going nowhere

People that buy Butch commisions don't buy a drawing, they buy the fact that Butch Hartman made that drawing, now i'm not trying to justify Butch's prices, i'm just saying that people buy his commisions not because he is a good artist but because he used to be the guy that made cartoon shows, he is just taking advantage of that to make a lot of money.

I used to look up to Butch so much, especially with how much I love Danny Phantom, but just watching how far off the deep end he’s gone just destroys my hope for humanity sometimes. Being a bit of an introvert myself, hearing him pretty much indirectly call me selfish for something I can barely control just pisses me the hell off.

Referencing this heavily is still pretty much theft, even if its not good. Redrawing other art is fine if you ask me, as long as its not for profit or anything of the sort and the original is credited, unless explicitly stated by the artist, heavy referencing is great for when you're learning how to draw. For when you're learning. If you're put trying to sell 200$ commissions, you'd best be above entrance level art, have a developed art style and not be heavily referencing. Nothing wrong with light referencing, expecially when using multiple images, but you need to be able to create a proper illustration of your own volition, no matter the skill level.

Sadly the majority of people only want to buy art commissions from famous or celebrity artist rather than from a very talented stranger. Still, Butch should have known better to "swipe" (not trace) another artist but then again I don't really care.
