I have never once seen this man use an eraser. His biggest issue (artistically) is that he is SO full of himself, he's incapable of seeing when things can be improved. His lines look so messy and wrong because, while there is variety in the line weight, there's no reason for why the lines are thick in the places they're thick and thin in the places they're thin. At this point it would honestly look better if there was just no variety. It's a good thing to have confidence in your work but confidence doesn't really help you when it get's in the way of you bettering your work.

  • @luckydrawzz

I believe Mohammed mentioned Butch’s inconsistent variety in line weight in a previous video, and it ticks me off every time I see Butch’s art. It’s become a pet peeve for me, seeing such inconsistencies without a second thought. His arrogance prevents him from reflecting on his artistic mistakes, and I agree with that point you made. You can say his arrogance bleeds through other aspects aside from his art, but that’s a different story

[This isn't in defense of Hartman, but about the use of erasers] While I've been studying, my professors encouraged me not to use erasers as much (or at all, unless it's for highlights) and to acknowledge my mistakes and either find a way to work with them or just start all over [with the hopes that you'd have learned from the previous drawing]. Helps build confidence and decisiveness in strokes,, apparently; I mean it did help with traditional work--I still erase/undo a lot digitally lol. I've become so accustomed to it now that I treat my pencil like a pen and I don't know where any of my erasers are like 90% of the time. Could be out of habit if his schooling/training was anything like that, along with some of that overconfidence. I agree with everything else you've pointed out, though.

My rule on commission prices is to never judge other artists tho… if he can get $300 for something I can do in literally 20 minutes more power to him! I think Hartman drawing these characters in his own style is way better than him tracing at least. The Vegeta art is pretty weird, but that happens more often when drawing certain characters in a completely different art style, even from better artists. Look for example at the art Oda (the artist of Once Piece) from Goku. He is a very good artist, but Goku still looks really strange. I don't think this should be cause for ragging on the man. I have way more issues with all the other stuff he's done. As for the "overpriced" commissions (as long as he is not tracing it of course): the rates are industry standard. People are paying for the name in this case. I still don't think people should buy his art, not because the art is trash, but more because the man is trash.

Honestly, I agree. I love Mohammed’s videos, own work, personality, and commentary; know this video was a request and he’s far from the only person dragging Hartman; can’t stand the guy himself; and know it’s easy to look at everything he does in a bad and dishonest light knowing what kind of person he is and his track record; but there is an awful lot of going after his style by now, which… c’mon. It’s pretty clear Hartman doesn’t care about and doesn’t seem affected by criticism anyway at this point and it’s perfectly fair to talk about style to some extent, like in a way of looking at its parts and being able to say some elements of it do or don’t work for you in a general analytical way, but a huge part of it is personal taste and it isn’t like there aren’t other things about Hartman to criticize, including as an artist, e.x. like you said, charging huge amounts of money for final pieces that stick so closely to single specific references that they feel more like loose copies or personal studies than even stylistic reinterpretations.

I couldn't agree more. Even though Butch probably doesn't care about any of this, because he is closer to a pension than starting out. And I can say I don't consider his style appeals to my esthetics at all. But, this kind of behaviour is sort of bullying the artist just because it is encouraging trolls and other people that can slander any art style that they don't personally like and make a video about it. Commenting and not encouraging theft is what we need. This just feels like bullying and bashing a certain type of style because it is minimalistic and drawn very fast. And that is encouraging indirectly your audience to go and do some bullying themself. Also, we are talking about $200 for a commissioned piece. Not 2k. I am from a third world country and $200 bucks is nothing close to a life-changing sum :D Thumbs down from me.

I feel like this video was unnecessary slander against Butch tbh. I know most of your other videos are generally helpful and informative but this one just left a sour taste. I know he's had his moments but to just criticize someone's art for being "bad" or not comparative to the original is not enough to warrant an entire video about it. Keep in mind that it appears he doesn't take his time to refine his sketches or linework on his TikToks and that he's not familiar with "anime" art-styles. (the 6 on the ear is just Butch's trope as he does it in Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom) The pieces that are commissions are clearly better and refined as we saw in the Ryu one which wasnt that bad

Personally, I don't see any issue in Butch drawing anime characters in his style. As much as I don't like the guy, its an artstyle. And while some anime characters won't look too good in such a style, its expected cuz they're being taken from their original style to a vastly different one The problem with Butch is that he comes off as extremely arrogant, especially in the Rengoku clip. He doesn't even use an eraser(while that is a valid art technique, his art severly needs adjustment from erasers) His figures look stiff and out of proportion, the marker work and shadinf is messy, and the lines are kinda all over the place Really looks like a drawing an 8 year old made by copying a reference image But will he accept that fact? No Yet he charges and absurd price for his commisions. I think its like a designer brand. You're mostly paying for the fact the drawing is made by _the_ Butch Hartman instead of the actual quality of the art

I don't see how drawing fanart of anime characters can be perceived as wrong. Even if the art isn't up to your own personal standards, that doesn't make it unacceptable in any way. In the past, you called him out for tracing and other sleezy activities and you were always justified in doing so. But clearly what he's doing right now is completely harmless. And the whole thing about you harping on how much he charges for his commission really just make you seem extremely salty. He charges a lot for his commissions because he's well known and has worked hard in the industry for a long time. Even if the art he produces isn't better on a technical skill, he is still justified in charging however much he wants for his commissions. If people are willing to pay for it, why can't he keep charging for it?

Personally I‘m not familiar with the designs of most of the anime characters, but criticising the ears felt out of place, its a style and that‘s it, I personally like it. When I do fanart I draw it in my own style, why wouldn‘t I? Don‘t you? If the character designs aren‘t accurate that‘s one thing but saying it‘s inherently bad because he doesn‘t draw it how it was originally drawn is simply a bad take. Butch Hartman is an entitled stuck up guy that thinks he is better than others in every way and many more things, attacking him for not being a „good enough artist“ is such a wierd thing to do tho, if you want something drawn in a fairly odd parents style then maybe contact the guy who actually came up with the designs and stuff, which isn‘t Butch even if he likes to make it seem as if he did. He‘s just riding the wave trying to get the kids that now have grown up and have money to fall into nostalgia and give it to him. Personally I think there‘s a million things to criticise about this man, like the fact that he obviously has no respect for art and I would even go as far as to say he doesn‘t even like it since he traces and never tries to improve on anything. He has showcased his mediocre art numerous times for free on his youtube channel, if you pay 200 bucks and expect someone to put a lot of work into it even though his track record is full of stealing as he is stealing this artstyle from the og creator then maybe you shouldn‘t have spent that money, the first thing he should be known for is stealing, all he did was have the idea for the shows, all designs were made by some other guy.

So here's the thing. I understand Butch Hartman has committed many sins in the art community...and some sins in real life... But this isn't anything I'd raise my pitchfork and grind my axe for. He's drawing other characters in HIS style. That's the purpose, to not look like the original style but still be recognizable. Yeah, it's 2D, simplistic, angular, flat, and the ears are 6's but that's part of his style and what people will pay for. I wouldn't pay Butch to draw like you. If I wanted that. I would ask and pay for you to draw like you instead. Now the blatant copy with the same clothes, colors, pose, uneven eyes, selling it for $200. Yeah, I'd crucify for that. But coming at him for his style, that ain't right. That's like saying, Luffy ain't right because his hands are too big and not anatomically correct. That's the original artists' style. His Luffy that you actually liked because it looked close to the original. I actually didn't care for because it didn't look too much like his usual style. Don't get me wrong, I'm aware of the ridiculousness that is Butch Hartman, but this ain't it. I like seeing characters drawn in other style like 3d, Disney, Simpsons, as a duck...etc. I don't dig the idea of knocking on an artist for their art. I do like exposing those who copy, trace, and "fix" art though.

I don't know. I can't find much fault in his "doodle because TikTok asked me to" stuff. I don't think his commissions are exactly worth it, but it's not for me to decide. Commissions are all about how much someone is willing to pay you, and people are, obviously, willing to pay Hartman for those drawings. He's definitely riding on his reputation and renown more than his skill, but it's not really a naysayer's business what others want to spent a couple hundred dinero on. Back to the "doodle these anime characters" videos... it really is just what it is. He looks like he cranks those out in, like, fifteen minutes and I don't think he's getting money for them or anything, so I don't quite see the issue. It is his bobblehead style from his cartoon, which was what was requested, so of course it won't look like anime? I also recognized Vegeta right off the bat. I don't particularly like Hartman's style, but I don't see anything wrong with it, either. The sixes in the ears thing is a bit of his stylistic calling card and although it may look odd to those who probably just recently started seeing it, it looks pretty normal to me since I grew up watching his cartoons. I don't personally inspire from his pieces, because I think it's too goofy-looking, but I've seen it often enough that it's just... yep, that's Fairly OddParents. I much prefer it to the x's some other cartoonists drew in the day that made the ears look like buttholes on the sides of the characters faces. When I doodle, I invoke the "b" strategy for ears, but I wouldn't apply it to a serious drawing. But I also don't animate cartoons, which is the origin of most of Hartman's shortcuts. Maybe because I'm so used to seeing his style I don't find his art appalling, but I don't think most of it looks all that bad or even different from his cartoons. The commissions actually look better than his cartoons, as I remember them. Again, I wouldn't pay that much for them, but they weren't made for me, so whatever. That said, he definitely seems set in his ways, if the "One Piece art style challenge" was anything to go off of. He's obviously lost his knack for identifying key elements in different styles, or maybe he never had it in the first place. I couldn't tell you that was OP's art style without the caption; it honestly looked more like a fan's rendition in their personal style, not something Hartman drew to mimic something else. My main issue with Hartman, though, is his arrogance. It comes across like he doesn't take art very seriously anymore. He doesn't care what his line work looks like. He doesn't erase mistakes. He doesn't pay attention to the shading, just does it habitually whether there's an identifiable light source or not. He, frankly, draws like I doodle. Which for some of it, fine, but I'd think he'd want to take at least some of those "look! I'm hip! I know anime!" drawings seriously. Maybe that is just the cap of his talent and he no longer desires improvement and all his cartoons were heavily touched up by his assistants and he just doesn't give a damn because he's already made it big and has the money and... whatever. It kills me he has a cult following that thinks his art is the epitome of Art(tm). He really hasn't given us anything to show he even wants to make better work. It's like he's persuaded himself his drawing ability is infallible and requires no further improvement. He's stagnant. Perhaps that's his worst offense; he isn't trying. Not anymore, if he ever was. (and his personality kills me, why is he so condescending and irritating to converse with???)

You guys don't understand, yes i agre maybe his pricing might be too much but the art isn't bad, regarding its requested to be drawn in his "OWN STYLE" if he was asked to draw a luffyy, then the drawing would suck but its asked to be drawn in his own style, every artist is different and have their own style, good vid Mohammed, funny vibes and keep the work up bro, God bless

The price is too high. It's a inked sketch drawn in a caricature style. Fairy Odd parents and Tuffy Puppy have that style, while Danny Phantom is less exaggerated. Caricatures aren't 300 pounds/dollars, the highest they can be is 50 dollars (and that's if its a detailed caricature that's coloured/painted). Butch style is caricatured and not a lot of time is spend doing the work. Artists get paid for how long they spend on a piece and most importantly how good and detailed the work actually is. A lot of the time Butch's work is okay but it does have errors and mistakes with anatomy, colour and proportions. Compared to artists like Sams does art, Lolish, Ross draws, Ergo Josh and Mohammed his work is not on their level. His style on anime characters are okay but don't have a new perspective on the characters. There are artists with stylized work with less details and its still on par with those artists, look at studio ghibli? I understand its his style its just that it never improves. I've never seen a amazing piece of work with his style done by him.

Yeah i agree the art industry selling works of name rather then ability is a valid concern but butch didn’t start this it has been that way for centuries. And morality and past actions should be criticised but those are separate to just how someone draws

I don’t get some criticisms that people give to butch, like the art isn’t that bad it’s just cartoony which his art style and what’s he’s known for. Also I don’t get why people diss his commission prices, he’s a big name in the industry, he created and help create some of the most popular cartoons so it makes sense that he charges a lot, your getting the signature and personal drawing of a industry giant, and also it’s lot like he’s forcing people to buy his commissions 🤷🏿‍♂️ Like I feel like people dislike Butch so much that they go into a blind rage every time they see him even tho he’s lowkey just doing what every popular artist do. Drag him for his fail streaming site and him saying he can cure autism with prayer, don’t drag him over this petty stuff.

But this isn’t a crime. He’s drawing things in his own style. Or at least the style he’s most known for. Ofc, if you don’t like the style, that’s fine. And most people in this comment section are reasonable about this. Good job.

There’s a lot of people who love his work. The definition of a profession is “a paid occupation.” If he’s as widely known as he is, it’s for good reason. The Art community blows my mind. So many folks focusing on tearing others down instead of building each other up.

I feel like Butch can draw, he just does not want to improve and put in work in his artwork. He should be so much better than he is because he's worked on animation, but it seems he isn't drawing to improve. The commissions are a quick way to make money, and I don't blame him for going that way. I just thought it would be about the art too since he's a artist but I don't think it is. When you see Bryke (Creators of ATLA) you see that art is important to them and it shows by the commissions they do and even continuing working and creating stories. Butch isn't inspired anymore to create art or animated shows and that's okay, but he shouldn't be scamming people (i.e his fans) for commissions. They are getting ripped off for overpaying based on the quality of the art. Him going the IG artist route and doing quick commissions with zero feel to them shows where his mind is: Money.

I feel as though if any unproblematic western animation artist went viral for drawing anime characters in a western cartoon style, folks wouldn't bat an eye. But, at this point we are all so tired of Hartman's shit that we will find any reason to rag on him.

Wow. Just wow. I'm an amateur to digital drawing and I have only 3 pieces of unfinished artwork and they still look better than Hartman's commission. If you're doing commissions for your fans, wouldn't you want to give them the best that can actually value $300? P. S. Had no idea Mohammed was so fit. Look at them thicc arms. ( >∇

At this point, most fans know the quality of his drawing and if someone gives him $300 for it, it is that person's problem. I think something like that is better than some artists who offer $10 pictures and ruin the entire market.

I honestly admire him for getting so many requests. I would honestly draw overtime to get requests like this. Like imagine people actually wanting to see a character in your style. No one would ever do that for me man, and I wish they did, because so far only people irl might request me or I'm just ignoring the requests? But yeah, at least he isn't tracing this time and actually drawing from scratch. Then again Idk much about the drama or him so yes
