This video made me realize a stupid contradiction. “Dont be an artist, you’ll starve” “no, i wont pay! A real artist does it for the love of their craft.” This applies to gigging musicians too. I guess its less a contradiction and more that people feed into that cycle.. “dont do this, youll go broke- anyway, i dont value your work as work”

exactly. sometimes it may be due to stereotyping and forcing an image on an entire career path just based on some people's perception of a handful of individuals they may have come across who chose those career paths, but were having a rough time ( which literally happens in every other career path)

What's ironic is the fact that most of the things that brings entertainment etc. for those kind of people had to be drawn/designed/written by an artist. Clothes, buildings, furniture, books and covers for them, comics, cartoons, toys, vehicles, packages designs for food and drinks, storyboards for movies and tv shows, consoles & phones designs, soundtracks, literal games and many more... If it weren't for artists, they wouldn't have a lot of cool things and yet they still live in that delusion that it can't be a high payable job.

@@assgremlin its less that it “cant” be high-paying, and more that many believe it *shouldnt* be high-paying. They dont see it as work or a job, unless youre doing it for a big company for blizzard or being a graphic designer or something more “official/job-y” Instead of simply taking it for granted, they believe that artists shouldnt make a living “just for being good drawers, get a real job” because if you dont “contribute to society” in the high-brow white collar way they imagine, youre just making money for being lazy.

That one I can kind of understand. If someone paints we call them a painter, sculpts we call them a sculptor, makes pots we call them a potter, inks we call them an inker. So, what do you call someone who draws? Artist is a very broad term encapsulating a range of disciplines. Draughtsperson sounds like you do technical and engineering drawings. Sketcher seems to denigrate the work, and may get confused with the shoes. Pencilist? Drawer at least has some logic behind it.

In college we were forbidden to use anime art styles for art class (as in, teachers didn't want us copying styles from specific animes and such). Last year my final project was a comic and a classmate started complaining to the teacher that he was being biased because he liked me and 3 others that had also done either illustration or comic related projects and we shouldn't have a grade because we were drawing anime. It is sad when someone thinks everything that is either simplified or cartoony is anime, it is even more sad when it comes from someone who IS an art student.

Worse when it's an art teacher thinking everything anime/manga is simplistic. The short version of my story: Art teacher sees older kid's badly copied anime, and bans anime/manga/anything not considered art history tbh for my year onwards. Despite literally winning every competition the teacher set, and being the teacher's fave... no manga project for me. Technical drawing (precision graphics such as architecture, packaging and logo design etc) teacher sees me drawing manga in my free time, compliments it and copies a detailed image as an example for me. Ended up making a manga inspired project for that teacher's class, while I got forced into tedious level realism for my art class.

Creative majors: game design, creative writing, film, art were like double maybe even triple the amount of work compared to my other classes when I attended my university. Like sure we didn’t have finals, or midterms, but having weekly projects is not any easier. It was like we had finals every week. Creative work is work, and it usually takes anywhere from 3-8 hours for small projects, let alone the days of work for larger projects.

He made a mistake and said "I also do mistakes while I draw, but I try to hide them by inserting them into the whole picture naturally". And I think that is a great advice how to cope with the mistakes, especially if you ar drawing with pens/ink/some other non erasable material

When I started going to public school when I was 12, I was SOOO sick of people asking me to teach me how to draw. So for the next 3 or 4 years, if someone asked me to teach them how to draw, I'd always respond with "okay! what do you want me to show you first?" They'd either immediately chicken out or give up a few steps in. Out of all the people I did this to, ONE. ONLY ONE of those people is still drawing to this day. One of my best friends in the entire world. She just recently graduated college with a degree in graphic arts. It has taken me over a literal decade to get to a point where I can tell at a glance who to say yes or no to when they ask me to draw them something. I can literally tell by how they're looking at me or what type of friend they are whether or not they'll be patient with me, if they understand they are expected to pay full price, etc.

The ones that ask about anime do it because their second question is always "Can you draw X, that's my favorite character!". 🙄 There was this guy in college that kept pestering me to paint him as a Jedi knight with oils! I guess he thought he was being clever because he kept suggesting that he can come over whenever to model for me, so he would get a free painting and maybe something would happen between us when he was "modeling" for me. Ugh, 🤮🤮🤮 there was no way I wanted to be in a room alone with this guy(for some reason he kept mentioning that his back was hairy and if that was okay. WHAT??? May I remind you that he wanted a painting of himself as a Jedi knight, why the heck would his hairy back matter???) 🤮🤮🤮. After I told him I don't really paint with oils he thought he was clever and said that it would be good practice for me, like he was doing me a favor. FFS.

I never understood the “when people look at your art you get annoyed “ thing . Cus like… I really don’t mind in fact I love it. It means that my work is good and that I’m on the right path . Also if I draw then obviously I want people to see it . Although I do understand if people get too nosy and disrupt your workflow but in that case just politely ask them to stop. Another point I want to make is that when people ask some honestly stupid questions you need to understand that they are just trying to converse and don’t know how to strike up the convo. Like me an artist wouldn’t know what to say to start a conversation with a carpenter or an artist of a different medium. I think people are just going too with this honestly.

So it actually made me feel special and unique from everybody. 2. Anime was not well known, the only anime I ever drew was Dragonball Z characters since that was the only anime I knew existed. The rest of the time was sonic, archie, garfield or my own characters. 3. The phrase people gave me whenever they see my finished work made me feel good. Which I only much later realized has stunted my road to improvement because I have never once had a good art teacher before I went to college and online drawing tips did not exist. 4. But yeah! I totally got the "Can you draw me?" question. I only remember 6 times it happening though.
