I would understand if its someone who COMPLETELY doesnt upposrt crediting artists yea then its wromg but in some other ways its not bad Like legit when I cant find who the artists are I just All Credit goes to the artists Edit:The reason I didnt know who they were was because i just looked pics up on Pinterest and Google and I tried to dig for the artists names but couldnt find them!

Art repost accounts are somewhat unfair, but I have to admit, I discovered a lot of amazing artists through them. For example those Weibo artists with chinese usernames, there is no way for me to find them otherwise. Credit is really important here, some of them do everything to make sure the artists's names and accounts are highlighted which is great. Others try to hide it or not put it at all. Seeing my art on an anime repost page with 10k likes and no credit was the worst.

But in certain degree an artist who uses a famous anime character, attracts attention for a character He/she did not created, and is benefiting also from an idea He/she has not done. And in much cases actually gaining money or at least follows and exposure which will lately redund in more opportunities, and all that without paying a single cent to the original creators, that is also a degree of unfairness or stealing. And most people dont realize of this fact. Now, if you asked permission for using a character, or reposting a piece of art, that is the right way of doing things.

  • @AmanaHB

    @AmanaHB

@@animgreat2719 the fanart subject has also been debatable, creating fanart is usually totally fine, but using it for commercial purposes depends on the owner or company. For example, some companies allow selling fanart as long as it's not on websites like redbubble. Others allow selling fanart goods at conventions as long as the gains don't surpass 500$ (not sure but I think this is the case with Naruto). So like you said, permission is necessary. As to reposting, full credit is usually enough, but some artists either require permission or refuse it altogether

"Credit to the artist" is what really drives me up the wall. Images as media are cheap. They're everywhere, we see them every day everywhere and your average person doesn't stop and think about them. When they see cute art of their new favourite character because they followed the hashtag they enjoy the image, like, and move on. I think that's why it's difficult to fight against it, a lot of people don't care - and it's often not malice, maybe art isn't in their circle of interests so they don't get exposed to issues like these. If people knew and cared, there wouldn't be an audience for these rip-off accounts but that's never going to happen. And it's not just single person's doing this. Madonna's concert background used indie artist's works without permission not to mention compensation, big clothing companies straight up ripping off designs from the internet... and they get away scot-free so that doesn't help bringing visibility to the matter.

Exploiting the established fandom? Then, the only reason a naruto fanart does so much better than original characters is because of the underpaid and uncredited work of all the personnel in the anime animation studio that did the work of turning the show so appealing to large audiences. I didn't see any fanart pages using their platform to credit every artist of every frame, just platitudes about what a shame it is and even brushing it aside by saying that ten bucks to netflix or crunchyroll should be thanks enough. Talk about let them eat cake. This problem is just art students trying to squeeze themselves into a comfortable position of getting hand-fed by the algorithmic popularity machine, without crediting Tim Berners-Lee, instead of working out a proper solution to their problem. Capitalize your ability insted of your past works. Get a job that needs your services on a regular basis and is always paying you for your next work rather than the last. Don't live hand-to-mouth. This is how we climbed down from the trees that gave us their fruit copyright-free.

It pisses me off when big name stars use work illegally, but then get all upset when people remix their work and download it illegally. Like how is it no different than what you’re doing? Aaron Carter got called out for stealing an amazing artist’s work on Twitter. I can’t remember the artist, but he stood up for himself and call him out. It sparked a whole discussion about big people who steal and don’t credit. I often wonder now when I see a design in stores if it’s stolen or not. That’s why as artists we shouldn’t feel ashamed to watermark or upload lower res stuff. It won’t 100 percent prevent the theft, but it might make it more difficult for whoever to sell if it’s low quality or has a brand marker on it. I have a logo stamp I use and make sure to also place a copyright symbol and my name in a way that flows with the design.

When does a concert slip into being an uncredited modeling show for the clothes the artist is wearing? Should musicians start every time rattling off the names of designers, and is it okay to leave out the seamstresses? FCC quidelines also require you disclose if what you promote is a paid ad, but if you disclose an unpaid advertisement are you liable for falsely implying that who you credited has paid you off?

@@sboinkthelegday3892 I understand your point, but I think the argument "capitalizing on popular media using fan works, then demanding payment and attention is unreasonable" doesn't necessarily contradict "people don't care about the source of fan works because images (and/or artwork) are cheap commodities online". For one, not everyone is posting artwork with the intent to get paid. Maybe it was an art log. Maybe it was to show appreciation to said popular media. But either way, unless specifically stated, the one truth about online posts is that it is for public consumption-not redistribution. The public has access to it, the public can critique it, but they can't handle that work with the same authority as the creator. And when people violate that implied rule, especially when the original poster explicitly said not to, there's bound to be conflict that arises.

@@sboinkthelegday3892 That's quite a bad analogy. It doesn't matter for designers to get credit from their clothes being worn by musicians since the designer still profit from it when the musician bought the clothing. This thing happened to me recently. I've been in the art community for years and I was aware of the reposting situation, but it really ACTUALLY hit when it happened to me personally. I'm a semi-small artist and some of my drawings have gotten quite popular but some time ago I made a series of incorrect quotes from Haikyuu characters and one of them got really popular on twitter and, obviously, people started stealing it and posting to other platforms as well. Kind people sent me links of the reposts whenever they found them (I'm sure there are many more) and the more I get them, the more helpless I feel because of all the posts I've found, only ONE has been deleted so far...It really hurts putting hours and hours of hard work only to get like 2k likes (this is a big number for me) and then see it on reddit with 13k and 50k upvotes. AND on top of that, they made my art into a MEME TEMPLATE and started putting their own text over mine. And now my art is posted on meme pages in horrible quailty with some random text badly slapped on top, I've reported them, I've written to the ops, I've made a complaint to twitter, reddit, but all my words have been ignored and these posts still get mad amounts of attention. I feel really bad for artists who experience this all the time, the disrespect and blatant ignorance is really disheartening.

@@Ch50304 I'm sorry, do you even know how fanart works? Last time I checked, making derivative art of public media (be it manga or anime etc) for non-commercial purposes is not illegal. I made no profit from drawing this work nor did I mean to make any, I make fanart purely out of love and respect to the author of this work (and I'm sure many other fanartists too, please don't disrespect them so ignorantly), to spread it so more people see it and get interested in this fandom. But sure, it you want to go to the trouble let's ask Shonen Jump/Shueisha or Haruichi Furudate how a fanart work of some random girl with 800 followers on twitter harms their sales and whether they care if people draw their characters. Technically it's still art with a certain amount of originality that took effort and time of that person (the only thing making it fanart is the presence of a character, everything else is the project of their imagination and creativity) so I at least own the right to keep this work to myself and not have it used by someone else because again, it's made for me and other fans to enjoy, not make money or get famous. You should aim your complaints at people who do steal the art (technically belonging to manga authors as you said) and distributing it without giving credit to the characters of this work, disregarging them and changing it into a completely unrelated meme, to sell merch, buy promotions on their pages and get attention and not reply to already forgotten 4 months old comments.

After that point, and because of the nature of instagrams block system, I began reporting images silently instead--figured it wasn't worth the risk of losing the ability to even report the images. I was still doing a lot of Steven Universe fan art at the time so there were *a lot* of images that had been reposted, and I definitely reported around 1000 posts over the span of i guess a few weeks. I thought that was the end of it, but turns out tons of these repost accounts were actually *deleted* over too many violations, and the community had started blaming a friend of mine simply because she was very public about not liking reposters. They started harassing her over it. Of course I came forward about it, but it still blows my mind that people who apparently know what they're doing is bad will still throw rocks at people who try to protect their work.

wow. so sad that it was seen as bad that you got them taken down. like I only like the reposters that actually credit and provide a link to the artist's pages. it's useful, especially when their names are like foreign names that I would never be able to find on my own. but most of them aren't honest like that and just repost.

This also forces artists to sign their work in such a conspicuous manner that it interferes with the art itself. You literally cannot sign your work in the bottom corner anymore because these people are going to crop it out. Another terrible form of theft is these cartoon-yourself apps. I see them advertising on Instagram with people's art and the references... claiming that the transformation from reference to art was done by the application meanwhile an artist spent hours if not days developing that piece.

They followed me and then unfollowed me after I followed back (pretty typical, whatever) but then I noticed that despite claiming to exist to promote artists, they only post the art of very famous artists with 100k+ followers even though they only have about 1000 themselves. They say to use their hashtag for a chance to get featured, but they never post art from anyone who actually does. When I asked if they ever post art from artists who have less followers than them, they said they do PAID shout outs. So basically they just use the art of more famous artists to get clicks on their own account and then try to scam less popular artists. Screw these accounts. They do credit the artists, but you have to tap “view more” to see it, it’s not immediately obvious.

You make super valid points in this. Have you considered about talking about celebs and bigger stars stealing work? I remember Elon musk tweeted an artwork called 2B and refused to credit the artist saying it looks more aesthetically pleasing without the credit... A lot of people were calling him out too, eventually people found the artist and the artist was the one who apologized for all the drama this had caused. Sure it gained traction because he did that, but it pissed me off because it’s an example of how little people care about us, our work and our craft. They only give a shit about looking at something “cool” for 4 seconds and moving on. There needs to be a PSA making people understand what goes into making anything. It makes me so mad, it’s like our efforts our discredited and we only exist to fill the internet and make other people money. We also shouldn’t be afraid to support each other when people with a lot of power steal stuff, they need to be held accountable!

I found the artist and pointed this in the repost's comments section, tagging the artist. Eventually the original artist noticed and replied to my comment and started commenting about repost accounts. The repost account was saying that they would delete our comments because of bad vibes or some shit. I'm not a popular artist at all and I remember back in the day when I was really active on the fnaf amino that I made a drawing of ballora and her minireenas in Tim Burton style, or at least I tried to. Heck I was so proud of my sketch of it that I decided to do a part of the lineart and then coloring it in for musically. It never got really popular (also posted it on my insta and deviantart cause why not) so yeah it came as a surprise that I saw someone stole my art and said they made it when I suddenly was watching the story on a minireena fan account that apparently had a ballora art contest going on. I ofc first contacted the owner of the art contest and then commented on the post where the art thief said that it was theirs. Short after that the art thief took the post down but never apologized and changed their name, instead the owner of the art contest said sorry to me while they really couldn’t know and then they followed me. And that’s the first time that I ever had art stolen from me. When this happend I was mad that someone stole my drawing that took me a couple of hours to make, but deep inside me there was a spark of joy cause that meant that they thought my art was pretty good.

"Credit to the artist" is not credit! You can take the time to download and reupload an image, but you can't @ the artist?

that happened to me so much.. I am a small french art student with 150 followers and saw my arts in big reposts acc not tagging me at all and just stealing.. its disgusting especially for small artists who get overwhelmed by this flow of content we end up drowning in and struggle to get back on our track.

This happened to me recently, people started reposting my fan art without asking me first. I don't mind people reposting my art as long as they do It the right way, tagging me in the photo and in the caption, and OF COURSE they have to ask permission first. lol

I'm not a good artist and not popular but some one did repost my art. They got around 800+ likes and I got almost 100 likes, I'm done.

repost accounts piss me off so much. I follow a few hashtags on insta like origincal character and character design and a lot of the time those hashtags are just filled with art repost accounts and its beyond annoying

Preach bro. If you're going to repost, you MUST tag the artist before you write your "what would you name this monster?" caption. Your literally building your page off the backs of the artists work you're taking, the least you could do is credit them front and center. I really hope this gets shared around and drilled into the brain of people running these pages. Even worse these pages will charge artists to be "featured" among their gallery of art they downloaded and reposted.

Aw, so u rode off the coat tails of the animal crossing design, the game which u didn't create or spend money on, and are now angry someone decided to do the same to you. pot meet kettle, ur black. Newsflash, ripping off some product, doesn't mean u did anything, its fanart, u don't even have copyright.

Another thing that I REALLY hate about art repost accounts is that even if they tag the artist or mention them in their caption or something like that, it is definitely not guaranteed that the people looking at that post will actually try to look for the original artist or check out and like the original post. Then, the reposted work ends up getting more attention than the original one anyway and that is totally unfair.
