    I do agree with your statement. It has become incredibly difficult to grow a following on Instagram due to popular artists being promoted and trends oversaturating the feed. However, something I had to ask myself a few months ago: Am I posting on Instagram to just build a following and make money, or am I posting on there because I want to share my passion with the world, even if only 5 people see it? And while Pinterest girl drawings make a majority, seeing something completely different is refreshing, so don't give up. People will see it. I am grateful for the followers I do have, even though it's not much in terms of numbers. But those who stick by you love what you do even when we take breaks. Just keep posting what you love.

    I understand where you’re coming from - but something that is important to keep in mind is Instagram wants to make money. That’s why posts have no reach - they want you to pay for ads. Everyone starts out with 0 followers - some will buy advertising and from that they can grow. Others will hustle. And by hustle I mean, they will comment on people’s work, like, follow and try to connect with bigger artists - and that is what leads to growth. You can’t just post art, and expect the followers to come. Instagram won’t allow it. Spending time connecting with other artists commenting etc helps the algorithm spread their work - and hopefully they will return the favour by commenting/liking on your work - and maybe following. I have spent many, many hours trying to develop relationships with artists on Instagram - and I still do. I don’t have a huge account - but it is decent, and I can safely say my work very rarely gets shared...

  • @MohammedAgbadi

    @MohammedAgbadi

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yeah true. Instagram is a business so therefore they would want you to spend money. You’re right networking is really important, but now a days even if you network all the time it’s still hard and people will barely share your work.

    @Brandon Parker - hashtags are an absolute must - but they are still subject to instagrams algorithm (and by extension, their pay to play system). Interacting costs nothing but time - and it’s not something that the algorithm can restrict. If you follow, and comment enough - try and get conversation with people, a lot of them will check out your page - and often follow back.

  • @MarcFHuizinga
    @MarcFHuizinga4 жыл бұрын

    As far as social media is concerned, this goes typically beyond Instagram. Before Instagram artists had to post on platforms where mostly other artists were found. The reach was exponentially less there when starting out. But even on those platforms, there's always a snowball effect. The social media game is akin to a snowball that rolls down the cliff. As long as you consistently put down content time and time again to the point where your followers know they can expect work from you on a near-daily basis, then that'll bear fruit. People will know you exist, because you give them content on a regular basis. Given enough time. Literally no one starts out with thousands of likes. Even when you draw pinterest girls. At the end of the day, even when you do the things that we think works on social media, you still won't be a star overnight. Not even when you've put in the years and have refined your work. You just won't see much traction as you haven't built up anything yet. It takes time to organically grow a following. This goes for every social media platform out there. The exception here is when you get noticed by more prominent people who feel like sharing your stuff. That'll always get you a nice buzz when it comes to engagement. But above everything, don't draw content just for likes. You're doing art because you enjoy art, and it should reflect that in the work you put out. The one constant here however is that it needs to be something that can be considered high quality, or is somehow able to be very relatable to a great many people. Case in point: photographers taking pictures of beautiful landscapes. There's plenty of them, as well as the ones who focus on feminine beauty (which, in this case is the photographer's version of pinterest girls). In the end, if you do it for the internet fame, you'll hit a burnout before you can say ''Instagram algorhythm!'' because you'll never be happy with what you achieve. And the worst part? That goalpost keeps on changing. Maybe you are happy with ''X'' amount of likes, but soon that goal will now be ''Y'' amount of likes. Nonetheless, great video Mohammed. It touches on things we artists tend to struggle with a lot. Here's my take on it, but that doesn't mean I'm unfamiliar with the feelings you've presented here. But it just might be the wrong way to think about all this. Oh and since you asked for instagram handles, here's mine! @marcfhuizinga

    Yeah your perspective is pretty much the same I’m talking about, but I love the angle you’re coming from. I feel even after you have started gaining traction if you don’t do what the algorithms want you to do to continue growing you will slow down fast! I started my journey on concept art forums, cghub, and deviant art, it was tough but eventually I started growing a following on deviant art because I was much more consistent on there so it was easier for people to see my progress.

    In my opinion, I think people need to stop worrying about the followers. Once you start worrying about the god awful algorithm and comparing yourself to artists with 100k+ followers is when you start to feel shitty about yourself. And it's unhealthy. Don't post art to gain followers. Post art because it's something you like and are passionate about. The followers will come with time but in the meantime, get out there, talk to people, like and follow others and just be patient. Most importantly, just do what makes you happy Edit: Just wanted to make a quick edit sense this comment, for whatever reason, is getting a lot of traction now. So, I made this comment more so for artists just starting out on Instagram with only 100 or so followers and is constantly worrying about the algorithm not being in their favor. They're not trying to make art their job or even sell their art but they want followers to have followers because they feel like that number justifys themselves. That's when art isn't fun. That's when art becomes a chore. If art isn't your job, then don't make yourself feel like it is one. Edit X2: if you are trying to make art your job, get out there and talk to other artists. Join and participate in groups, do share for shares, and try new things. I believe I made this post when I had about 1k followers and I'm now a little over 2.3k because of these things above. However, I'm not pushing myself to my breaking point by trying to please the algorithm. Ive made other art friends in the community that are doing and selling the same things I am. All ranging between 1k to 100k in followers and all of them are lovely people. We all help each other out and that's how you beat the algorithm. You make friends and you share each other's works.

    Is not about that, I know some people that are full time artist and are losing money because of the algorithm. Accounts with more than 5K , with less than half the followers able to see the posts, this means less commissions, less money than before, is not fair. They are playing with people´s money and income.

    Its reallly reassuring to see so many other artists feel this way, I always hate seeing the same old 'pretty model girl' paintings and drawings on insta. Its so uninspired and boring at this point. I don't know why people like them so much, personally I find them meh. I hope we can all just create and hopefully people notice Edit: pretty girl art is still art, although some find it bland you may like it and that's fine. But it saturates art feeds with the same type of artwork and hinders creativity. Art is more than just pretty girls and hyper realistic eyes or lips. Nowadays, people draw these just to be popular. Again, if you like it-that's cool and there's no judgement on you as a person. However for artists/viewers out there with different art styles or art content, they are being pushed away because an algorithm says they don't fit the 'pretty girl trend', that kinda sucks.

It’s not like instagrams features are so original anymore anyway.

    The punishing from infrequent posting pisses me off! Lately, I’ve been deleting my social apps to take a break and not become overwhelmed. when I reinstall and get back on and post, it’s like IG hates me bc I don’t live on there. I think people have been fed up with IG for a while there was some art app a few years ago started with a v I think that everyone ran too for a bit, but it’s hard bc we need people outside the art community too! Their features aren’t original anymore. I didn’t mind stories because I rarely use Snapchat anymore and you can share people’s art, but IGTV is kinda garbage and now they’re copying tiktok with reels... also their live streaming sucks too. I tried it a few times, it’s quite limited.

    I have been discouraged sharing my works in Instagram even tho how much I've improved. Because my style is not as recognized as the big time artists have so I try to change it. Imitate their styles show people what they want to see but at the end of the day. That's not what I want to do and see. But I don't care anymore. If people don't like my works, it's my art and it makes me me and it's all that matters.

    People need to understand that your art takes a backseat once you decide to put it on insta. It's never about the art. Just the marketing and aesthetic behind it. I joined art insta several weeks ago and realized the same problem. The instagram algorithm won't even let me see the small artists - those are the ones I want to follow, because I know we could make a meaningful contact, follow each other and just have fun with our art, and that's not really possible with the big stars, cause that's not why they're on insta. Another problem is that when we share only the big names, all the pictures on insta just sort of have the same style to the drawings. That's the popular style. Which really limits the diversity of art you see on there.

    As a small instagram artist that have been improving on my art for years, this video really made me emotional. It's really painful when we try our best, when we put all our heart and love into our work, and nobody actually sees it. And then when you look at other creators who, probably have are in the same level as us when it comes to their art skills, but have a BIG following we just look at ourselves and sometimes we think "I can do that too but nobody will see my work" or even "I can do better than that, why aren't I that known". That last part might sound a lil selfish you might think, but that's the truth. I'm not saying like "Oh, those big artists don't deserve to be known!! There's better artists out there!" Hell no! That's not what I'm trying to say. What I'm saying, is the perspective of a small instagram artist , or from any other platform. I'm glad this video was made so that we can spread awareness on this subject.

    In German we have a saying: "Du sprichst mir aus der Seele", which means "You speak from my soul" and there's really no expression more fitting for what I feel after watching our video. It's not just the instagram art community, it's also fandom spaces. People have stopped sharing. They'll complain that the fandom is dying but when a small and/or traditional artist like myself throws something out there, it's ignored because apparently we're still beneath them and their "content starved (but only if it's exceptional art by an artist who already has thousands of followers)" hypocrisy. It's why young/beginner/passionate-but-not-yet-there artists stop posting and leave fandoms or social media. It's a sad phenomenon, really.

Actually quite amazing like you could study emotions, climates, even putting a concept you were thinking about and integrating it into the fandom. As pessimistic as it may sound, the moment you're looking for validation online of your work, you have basically compromised yourself as an artist, especially on Instagram. No one is immune from wanting validation (inc myself) but Instagram is a rigged system, the good doesn't always float to the top and mediocrity reigns supreme. Rehashed art, fanart with little to no artistic merit (copy paste), predictable mundane pop-art and portraits of pinterest girls is 95% of content at the 'top' of Instagram art. While I understand some people's desperation for validation for professional reasons, if you're not doing art professionally you shouldn't participate in this toxic culture of throwaway art. Its damaging to your growth as an artist and severely limits your subject matter. While I won't claim not to be happy when my work is noticed and appreciated, I'm not going out of my way to cater to the 'trend' of now for some hollow online "validation".

So as a small artist myself I often tried to promote and be active in another small artist accounts if I truly enjoyed their works. It's really pitiful to see them trying to interact with their audience, but due to small count their barely got any response. Therefore I started to be as active and supportive as I can so they won't feel like nobody cares. And absurd in this that most of the time they just ignored it. I'm not even talking about supporting in response, they just ignored all I do. Like, why? Because I'm not some Ilya Kuvshinov and my shares, likes, comment doesn't have value? I came to this conclusion because I saw that attention from bigger accounts was perceived quite differently, with all that "Thanks for your comment man, I'm so happy you liked my art!" and all that stuff. And I'm just sitting there like an idiot... I hate social media to be honest... It seems like everybody just care about their own benefits and playing friendly only when it's profitable.

I want to let them know that their work is seen and appreciated. Famous instagram artists already have thousands of people tailing them. They do NOT need you, seriously. Their work is great and on a whole differnt level, i get that. But just think about how much of a difference your compliment would make for someone who only gets 2 likes per posts vs someone constantly bombarded with likes, follows and dms.

    Instagram's algorithm is the culprit. I have seen well known people posted low quality content and still get huge likes and more followers. You can bust your tail making artwork, post it, type in the hashtags and share it; but the Instagram algorithm can only dictate who can and cannot see your work. The algorithm only hurts small accounts not big accounts with well known people, models, etc.

I just got back to it recently, with the mindset that I'm not going in there for a huge following, I'm going back to build a strong relationship with fellow artists. and hopefully, those bonds and friends that I make along the way, would help me someday.

    One time, i think i became a tiny bit desperate with atleast having just even the smallest attention in my instagram but i couldn't really do that through bold posts or stories since im a bit shy😂 so i opted to just comment to big ig artists' posts saying that they could check out my account if they want to, you know the usual stuff. But i didn't notice that i commented twice or thrice on an artists'posts and they dmed me saying "Stop your fkcing spam boy, just improve your art and see how start to grow your acc. if your art is shit, nobody is going to follow you" which i understood, it was quite harsh but it is the truth (and in a way, it was rlly my fault hdhshs), if people don't like your art they wont pay attention to it. But how can you really know you improved in art or have great art if your post only reaches a small portion of social media users? AHhhh it's just so frustrating, like what must i dO xjxjdj it's so disheartening 🤧

    I'm going through the comments and I see my fellow artists going through all the things I personally go through. I relate with all of you so much. I have a few ideas on how to combat these feelings - I hope they work for you. 1) Create what you love. I have realized that the more I paint what I want instead of what might be 'popular' I get more praise than usual. Because the love shows up in the work. I have started BTS fanart and I got SO many compliments that I never got before. 2) Try to post on different platforms to expand your network - Facebook groups, Tumblr, KZread - repurpose the same content everywhere. 3) Research a bit on finding the best communities for you, be it fanart, abstract art, or anatomy. Whatever you like the most, and you paint the most. 4) Encourage other artists publicly. It takes NOTHING to share another artists work. I have started doing with abandon. As an introvert I message people very less, but I comment publicly, share their work and share genuine feedback. We know how it feels to get this, so I make it happen for others too. I hope these help, these points have helped me overcome 'just numbers and algorithms' mindset I was plagued with for years. My IG: @pripayal

    I will also admit it can be frustrating. Even with follow loops, no one really supports you after a while very inactive. DTIYS can be more boring after a while. Even if your a big artists sometimes a lot of other people wont even notice you. I had my fair share of being with other artists on IG some don't really support your work after they reach the height of popularity. My best advice don't post art for IG or for the sake of followers. Just post your work just show who you are and stand out.

    I've only been active on sharing my art in social media for 5 1/2 months, so yeah, my views are low. My average likes is around 16-18, and a lucky few got to around 25. And that's significantly more than I get on Twitter or Facebook. I figure all I can really do is follow the mantra of "be persistent." I draw daily and post weekly, drawing around my day job schedule so 1 new art a week is about my pace. Don't get me wrong, I KNOW it takes time to gain an online presence, I was never expecting "overnight success." I'm willing to put in the time and hope it pays off, and hopefully my art improving with practice. So THANK YOU for making videos like this, you're a genuine man of the people. Instagram really hurts. It really does. I've been trying to get more recognition for my art and it always gets a few likes but it never surpassed 12 likes. I'm grateful that people take time to like it but it really hurts seeing all these bigger artists out there and then smaller people struggling. I have a friend who used to actually have a smaller following than me but now she has such a big following and it hurts me. I'm jealous I know. She talks to all these big artists, even my own inspirations and I'm here... stuck at the bottom... where I have been for 3 years. It's really frustrating and it makes me almost breakdown when I post a drawing I worked hard on and see it only get 12 likes while other people get over 100 in a day for their "10-minute doodle". It just puts me in a funk.

I wanted to start my own insta art page a few weeks ago but I've been holding it off for now due to different factors, the biggest being that I just don't know how I can grow without having to practically sell what I like about my own art style. On a lighter note,I am honestly in love with your art style. It is very comic book and I love that because I read way too many comic books as a child so it brings back some nice memories I had. You use really basic lines and yet your final piece looks so detailed and stuff.

    They limit your reach for you to pay for the reach. If you open the facebook business tool and create an ad or boost a post you can see options like "Reach your followers" or "Reach people that don't follow me" This kind of options shows how the algorithm works! They don't show your post for your own followers so you can pay to reach them, It's just ridiculous. That's why Tik Tok grows so fast and instagram created reels, they are afraid. They spend their time creating new ways how to **** with users and artists is the weak part of the equation, we get tired of that. It's incredible how marketers keeps influencing this and saying it's cool . Instagram makes people and mainly artists sick. It encourages art theft! Have you ever tried to help artists reporting stolen arts? It's impossible! They don't allow this kind of reports because intellectual property law is different in all countries. It's so difficult and bureaucratic to report stolen art. But if you mark people in your fanart they notifies and sometimes shadow ban you! If you guys see a little what is happening in US about big tech companies monopoly you will understand this kind of stuff better, it's all about money, sorry but you are just a number! Don't let this companies make you sick. We need to take care of our mental health .

    As a guy who once tried to go through the path of earning a living from art. I sort of just gone numb to it. I've lost count of how many time I try best to create a piece of work , something that I'm genuinely proud of. Only to be reply by complete silent. I share my works on deviantart, tumblr, twitter, pixiv and even artstation. I tried to follow trends, draw fanarts, etc. But nothing....not even a single like,acknowledgement,critic or ANYTHING.. My work literally worth less than a random meme post XD. I have to join discord and forum to beg for critic and exposure (and humiliate myself in the process). 3 years of doing that, I just sort of stop caring and gave up( I have the liberty of just giving up as I have another source of income). I still draw and paint and I still upload my work. However, I just stop caring about gaining view/exposure anymore. Ironically, I started to enjoy drawing/painting again because of it. It kinda sad, now I'm recalling it but the facts is not everyone could be join the big boy league. I'm not the special case, there are thousands of artist who are better than me, yet they fail to gain attention. With how saturated the entire internet art community. Good art don't equal to having large amount follower, period. You need to crack the system and play the card right for the having a slight chances of getting notice.

Honestly I'0m starting to struggle with IG because even if I start to post on a daily basis I keep losing followers and interactions, but we need to be sincere about the fact that you really need to keep up with the trends and fanarts.
