Let me share a quick story too. I just landed a first job as a SOC analyst without any prior work experience in cybersecurity. I did free labs, google cybersecurity certification, lots of self education from free resources like this amazing channel. The position was originally listed as 'at least 2 years of experience' so was not really having high hopes but tried anyway. Interviewers were super cool about everything, saying that its mainly about attitude and will. Their thought process is that you can learn from trainings what you lack in knowledge, but for them the main focus was mindset, passion and willingness to work on yourself. Starting in march, wish me luck :) If I could do it, you can do it!

" You don't need a degree to succeed in Cybersecurity" This statement is super true. I found out that the CISO at a company I worked for had no degree and no certification. This individual only had a military background and connections within the field. Sometimes your network is even more important than a degree or certification.

@@Mr.Ali444. Thank you! 1. Skip the PBQs (performance based questions), do them last. This is advice that I took when doing the exam and I found that I had a lot more time to review my answers and was able to focus more on the PBQs when i got back to them. Some people spend way too much time on them then dont have time to think the other questions through. 2. The exam does want you to know definitions for certain terms/topics, but its deeper than that. For example, sure you might generally know what a firetruck is. But how fast can it go, what tools does it have to do its job, what risks can it reasonably accept to complete its objectives, and so on. Make sure you have good context and understanding of each of the learning objectives. 3. Lastly, PRACTICE EXAMS. Take as many as you can until you regularly start getting maybe 87%-90% percent passing scores (security+ isn’t percentage based but this should provide a buffer for you). Do different exams from different providers, i cant recommend any particular one, but theres plenty of free ones out there. Hope this helps and good luck, you got this!!

@@Mr.Ali444. Make sure you understand whatever you are exposed to (in the exam objectives). Don't rely on memorization only it won't help you that much, an important thing don't stress yourself about memorizing all the acronyms but instead know what they do is vital. For the practical part make sure you use lab (use the terminal) for the flags and most importantly use practice test materials to prepare your mind on answering questions in the exam style.....please please understanding is vitally vital...and for the questions you fail while practicing take a little time to understand how it works. I suggest you to check out Professor Messer Study Group that may help also. Finally when feel ready, go through the exam objectives again and explain every little bullet point to yourself. And remain calm before taking the exam you will be successful. Stay blessed

@@OG_Anime_ sure! The first cybersecurity certifications I got were Security+ and Blue Team Level 1. I should note that prior to those, I had A+ and Network+, and 2 years of Tier 1 IT support experience. While these things definitely helped in the grand scheme of things, it's not necessary to land a SOC Analyst role, although I believe it would make you stand out more. Network+ is far more important than A+ in security. I also want to point out the importance of home-labbing, doing online labs, and documenting what you learn on a blog or LinkedIn page so that hiring managers can see it. I was able to have nearly an entire page of cybersecurity experience without ever having worked in a position where 'security' was in my title due to building up cybersecurity-related homelab projects, and also online training like Blue Team Labs Online and TryHackMe.

Currently studying for the A+ cert, then planning to work in IT while doing a bachelor in Cyber Security once finished with the cert. I initially planned to do that because I have no experience whatsoever and wanted to learn the fundamentals (just like you said: « to better understand the system that you are securing ») to then start applying for Cyber Security jobs. Are you suggesting that someone in my situation should apply to lev 1 Cyber Security jobs (SOC analyst for example) right away instead of going through IT jobs? I know that this is what you are saying in your videos (I’ve watched a lot of them) but don’t you think that learning the basics of IT and computation gives you important knowledge that will help in your Cyber Security carreer?

Hi UnixGuy. I come from life sciences background (B. Tech Biotechnology). Though I come from life sciences background, I've always loved working with my computer. In my bachelor's degree, I took 4 papers from IT department (Front end and Back end fundamentals, Python programming, Cyber Security, Cyber Forensics). It's been 2 years since my graduation and I wanted to pursue a career in Cyber Security. I've completed ISC2 CC and I'm currently doing Google Cybersecurity certification. During my college, I've done some certifications from Cisco. In recent times, I started doubting myself whether I've chosen the right career or not. I'm feeling so low for the past days and I don't know what to do. Can you give me some advice?
