The workload is MASSIVE (for eg NIS2 in EU is forcing a lot of companies to get into cybersec) and there aren't enough cybersec profiles to go around. This can cause a lot of stress and burnout but your company should(!) manage that. I'm in my first cybersec job as presales engineer and the company I'm with is great in their support and people management! Those companies are out there but better to hop untill you find a place where you are happy.

Recently completed both Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate & Blue Team Level 1 Junior Security Operations Certification after watching your videos... I've also done quite a few labs and have built a homelab for learning. I come from a full stack developer background and I'm almost being laughed out of interviews here in Australia. No degree or 5+ years of experience, then forget it is the feedback I'm getting, so the shortage so many speak of don't seem to apply here.... After nearly 6 months of job hunting I'm considering heading back to software dev roles unfortunately.

Hey Sean, sorry to hear you had to go through that, looks like you interacted with rude (and dumb) individuals, ‘laughing at someone’ in an interview is not on - no exceptions. The idea was always to not quit your job, but study on the side and apply until you get a job. Please dont remain unemployed, get a job (anything, even software dev) but continue to learn and apply. Sorry but the shortage does apply to Australia. there are NEW roles advertised every single day. I don’t know which state you’re in, and how many jobs you applied to but also, how many interviews have you done? how many interviews did it take to make you feel like giving up? This is what I would: - get a job (even if dev) - continue to apply ti cyber roles - continue to learn, there is no reason to stop learning. Dont let somone rude interviewer make you change the course of your life Again, new roles are advertised DAILy in sydney/melb/canberra, less so in other states but it’s not zero

It’s a 100% reflection on them not me by the way! Like I said; the Australian market is quite good, specially in the cities that I mentioned. I say keep going, being a software developer you’re still in the IT industry so nothing is lost, no reason why you can’t build your expertise whilst you work as a software dev. The knowledge you gained from BTL1 will stay with you but please dont make it the end of your journey. Im enrolled at WGU in their CSIA program and love every topic so far. Hmmm... your breakdown sounds like nursing 😆 I've been a nurse for 12 yrs and after watching ppl die, having piss thrown at you, nails dug so deep into your skin, it broke the skin, doctors yell at you, families yell at you, patients yell at you, blamed by nursing management for short staffing, uncooperative coworkers (CNAs, PCTs other nurses), oh yea and let's not forget about nurse ego of those who feel they're more compassionate and knowledgeable than you sir, I can't tell you how ready I am to burn my scrubs and my nursing license in exchange for a desk with 3-6 monitors, business casual attire, quiet atmosphere, working alongside egotistical people who I can feel comfortable learning from instead of those who are trying to have your licensed revoked, a salary that I can actually live off of without working double shifts and picking up a per diem shift just to pay a bill or having to travel all over the country just to make a decent salary (travel nursing) i could go on. I had COVID 3 times because of this career, and I look forward to all the pros and cons of cybersecurity. Thank you for your points of view, though! Sorry to have been so long, but honestly, nothing in CS can scare me after what I've been through in nursing 🥲

Girl this ignited the rant in me Im a teacher and i feel the exact same way 😅 kids hitting you, hitting each other, had a kid mace the class once that was fun, the bodily fluids (don't even get me started kids are so nasty), the parents screaming and threatening you, not having a special ed class so they're just put in your class with no help, admin not having your back, being paid so little (i found out im making minimum wage -$10.50 an hour) AND admin just had the greatest idea ever for me to plan organize and run summer/winter camps so i no longer get any vacation. Will i get paid for this camp? Or course not! Which also means i get no time to plan the curriculum for the 3 schools they have me at so i get to do that at home for free 😍 and one school decided one of my classes should be grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 all together! Even with all of this, i still believe nurses have it so much harder 😅

Yesss!! I'm about to finish nursing school but until right now I didn't know why I was feeling low, lost, not knowing what the hell to do with my life until I discovered this field which to my shame I don't have any qualifications for but I'm willing to try and to learn than to work as a nurse. It's way more captivating, you feel worthy, doing something different than other normal people and you're not tied up to physical job or to be yelled at by others. This isn't as boring by any means neither useless but it's the other way around. Plus, not to be nosey but this job pays well also, you can work from home too, you can start learning about hacking (white hat hacking) and really feeling important, like you've stated learning about technology more. Would you please tell me where are you now with cybersecurity program? Did you take the course? Is it hard?😅

I'm a cyber security operations manager and manage a team of 8 engineers. Most of what we do is restoring connections to VPN's, port configurations on routers and supporting customers when they need to a fresh install of an OS after an incident. Cyber security is such a broad term that it can really mean anything. You need to have a clear understanding of which aspect of cyber security you want to specialize in.

If you’re managing a team of 8 do you have a sec to kind of go over what you look for when hiring? I’m interested in switch because I hate sales ha! But don’t want to invest time and money into a program if it’s not worth it, or if I’m taking the wrong route.

The constant report of talent shortage while it’s nigh impossible to find an IT job with degree, certs and projects … is crazy.

No I don’t recommend that. Best to follow the roadmaps that I outline in the videos

I quit my role as an L1 SOC Analyst because all I did was escalating alerts that were triggered and following up of emails of the depts in which alerts were triggered under. And filling up excel spreadsheets of alerts triggered. No learning curve. Same daily task. I've gone back to retail now and feel more fulfilled and the job is more meaningful. Still hope to get a cybersecurity job in the future tho, just not as an soc analyst. 😅

To be fair there's a lot to learn with SOC, you are the first line of defense in an incident, so knowing how to correctly identify and react to threats is a big part of what cyber security is. Maybe it's just the place that you worked or maybe you think of cyber as just the offensive part, but before breaking your toys you gotta know how they work and how to defend them.

@@lfb1260 true, it's the workplace unfortunately 😅 even my L2 and cybersecurity engineer could see and agreed what the L1s are doing at *that* workplace is not really an soc analyst role, and that there's more to being an soc analyst than what I was doing. Thus, the reason why I mentioned I would wanna get back into cybersec someday. Disclaimer: what I meant not going back as an soc analyst, is doing 12 hour shifts. It took a toll on my health 😅 but yeah should have clarified earlier. But I know for L1s it's a bit hard to find 9-5 soc analysts role in where I live. My L2s from my previous workplace has that privilege though of working 9-5.

@@hqxd7855 Yeah! And worse, the daily follow up emails. Repeat all night long. But for me, it was more to the relevant teams/depts. But that's the gist of my 'SOC Analyst' role. Nearing my resignation, there were more reputable companies with real opportunities to learn and see what SOC analyst job is really about that popped up, but I decided to lay low first and get back my health and happiness in general. My advice tho, don't rush into trying to get a cybersecurity job. Take your time to learn and do the due diligence needed - look out for the reputation, work culture, salary they offer etc. of the company. At the end of the day, your health and mental well-being is what matters most.

@@UnixGuy , thank you so much. I miss a lot of the cyber stuff but I am appreciating getting the basics more ingrained. The cert is in Networking too so I am getting a lot of exposure to routing and cloud stuff which for me is especially interesting. Packet tracer is a great tool albeit it frustrating at times.

Hello, I am a professional with about 5.4 years in IT consulting mainly in HealthCare Tech and decided to pursue a degree in Cybersecurity and enrolled into one of the top universities in UK. aoa brotha, look into wgu if u havnt already, im doing the cyber security degree and it comes with a bunch of certs to add to ur resume including security+ and pentest and a bunch more security certs alongisde the degree. if you're willing to put in the work, and have the time to put in you could finish in 4-6 months. im on track for 4 months but im not working so i can put a lot of time into it

Yeah Boreout totally is true! When you know it's a mature environment and nothing bad with consequence is likely to happen, and your job is a glorified insurance policy, the priority becomes allocating as much time as possible to doing certificates and upskilling during office hours whilst still looking like you're focused on your job. Most of office chat is suburban dad jokes lol. Ego part is fun to watch - people acting like they're fighting at the frontline of WWIII - so long as you take that to be a circus show. Different personalities take little jabs at each other, half-joking half-serious. Not the idealised elitist social environment a newbie would expect, but good thing is it takes away any imposter syndrome rather rapidly. One would think if these clowns can do the job, there's nothing stopping one from climbing much, much higher in the industry.

For the Ego bit, it sounds like you are running into competitive people. Their competitiveness can show on different dimensions. The solution, I'd say, is to give them more responsibility. The humility will come after when they either crack under the pressure or ask for help from others. In cybersecurity giving a person more responsibility and waiting for them to fail could be risky business, so the responsibility you bestow on them needs to be reasonable within security parameters. Befriending them and having friendly competitions also work. They just want to play. That's what I've found.

I believe the disturbance the egotistical person creates is due to their competitiveness in this case. Some egotistical people don't have an urge to compete, so they might not come off as disturbing. i applied for more then 1000 jobs, and i havnt got a single interview, idk why but i also got good experience, i have good certifications , good resume but still i get no response and no interview to the point that i gave up studying for cybersecurity a month a go.

hey there! i've seem all of your videos and they are very informative and have helped me with various questions and provided me motivation and i hope you don't mind but i think you should change your mic as it doesn't sound natural it feels kinda like a little bit machine generated and not so pleasant to listen to.
