The 19th century marked the decline of the Qing Dynasty and the emergence of revolutionary movements, leading to the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912. However, political turmoil and Japanese aggression plagued the country, leading to the rise of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) under Mao Zedong. The CCP's victory in the Chinese Civil War resulted in the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Under Mao's leadership, China underwent significant social and economic transformations, including the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, but at a great human cost.
