I once read about a group of students developing a sort of emergency internet based on LoRaWan The idea being that in a flood area, you could have a fleet of small floaters, that you just dump in the flood water, to Provide the area with communication, even when traditional cellular networks are unreachable or destroyed. Not for watchibg netflix, but for example getting informations about safe evacuation routes to people

These low frequency wifi types have been around for a very long time. 900mhz cordless phones used it as an example and those would let you go up to a mile away line of sight Other more modern uses would be "land lines" using wireless instead of copper wire everywhere and yes there are very solid reasons to have a land line even today. Basically any store you go to still uses land lines as do many small businesses. While internet based phones aka voip phones are increasing in popularity the voip protocol requires far more bandwidth than a regular land line type protocol would. Cheap rapid deployment is also a huge plus as you said dump a bunch of floaters in a flooded area to bring communications back up. You would not want them free floating obviously so you would simple add heavy weights on a cord to keep them from floating down stream somewhere and bunching up. Long ago wifi had a 900mhz standard the 1902.1 protocol was 1 operating at 30 to 900mhz 900mhz cordless phones use pacs Personal Access Communication System. Why the entire telco system has not been replaced with this is beyond me. 900mhz 1mbit capped is all you need to carry a stupid number of voice signals. Many areas in the us burry all but communication lines so you still end up with telephone poles everywhere. With wireless telco you could have say 3 poles per mile

10 years ago, men and friend built what we called the super link. It was a modified WLAN, so we could send internet connection from my home to his, and no fiber or cobbler was it his house. He installed a parabolic antenna, I had a smaller one, because I was not allowed to install a huge dish. We got up to 15 Mbps over 2 km, except on the day with heavy rain. We run it over nearly two years, until he got fiber.

It's a very good thing to have a long distance, low power, battery powered data and comms network for emergencies. Such things can provide vital connections, allow command and control functions, and are not as vulnerable as satellite networks which can be readily shot down, furthermore they can be shielded for the possibility of EMP attacks. There's also the remote IoT uses of course, a whole lot of remote sensors can be communicated with very cheaply.

900mhz is the same range as 3g networks use. On LoRaWAN I was seeing about 10mbps x 3mbps at up to 7-10 miles with clean line of sight. This is in a rural area, as cities have a lot of interference. We used the Ubiquiti 900mhz radios a lot back in the day, super reliable and had great curvature in the signal pathway.

It would be really handy for localized handheld device connectivity where low data rates are fine because the data being sent back and forth is more or less telemetry and other data for positioning of characters on a screen for games, or chat messages, and simple stuff like that. With enough users in a general area, multiplayer can be achieved even if there is no internet connection. And, if done right, there could be multiple wifi chips on board to handle different connections, so that for instance a person can bridge their device between the local network and the internet itself to access both. Their device just becomes an extra hop between the many devices at that point. But they would have to remain on at all times... lest the connection drops for everyone. Fail-over would be useful for this, but some games won't work on this kind of network at all I think.

Perhaps this should be looked into for a mesh network to reduce reliance on traditional internet providers... and also redundancy. If we could funnel some normal traffic across some of these networks from home to home allowing a network that can operate in the event of part of the traditional infrastructure is damaged or inoperable.

Using ubiquiti gear more than a decade ago we had some 40km links that ran at over 90mb/s just using class license frequencies. Licenced gear easily over a 1gbs for that range. But this does depend on line of sight, so I assume this gear is mainly focused on being a mini cellular network that can punch through whatever is in the way and that works on standard class licenced frequencies (aka 2.4/5ghz)?

How does the science works? given the fact that electromagnetic waves travel in a straight line, in order to compensate for the earth curviture at 830 miles you need a tower about 86 miles high (very close to carbon layer of the atmosphere). either they had to bounce it off the top of the atmosphere which does not work if the signal has long wavelength or use a satellite as a mirror to bounce it to the target boat.if they are using satelites, doesn't the starlink system or any stallite internet break the record further?

That is interesting observation on how inefficient wifi and even cell phone tech is. It seems to do a bit more bruteforcing than it should/needs to. From what I read, 3G, which could operate as low as 850mhz *officially could* have gone up to 40+mbps, but many providers never got above 15mpbs with it. The funny thing is 40mbps is only really bad for downloading software. It's actually adequate for streaming. I couldn't even break 100mpbs by trying with just HD streaming on multiple platforms simultaneously.

Really weird seeing these Odoo ads 😅 At work, we have been using it since 2017, and now there are entreprise cars with Odoo stickers around my city 😮

Yes this is far compared to even starlink. 900mhz would have been tropo ducting for sure.

at a buffet, i personally sneak corndogs into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 corndogs in my jacket pockets. it then, is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corndogs thinking they were part of the buffet.

Given that this wasn't filmed in one shot clearly. I'm amazed they didn't mention starlink at all. Why deal with dial up anywhere with these things when you can put a starlink dish or dishes all over the same places for proper internet speeds. And for more then likely the same price or cheaper. Do better guys.
