Overlooked and outsold thanks to its console sharing brother but should we be putting this on the same pedastal as GoldenEye? Maybe!

If you kill Moneypenny at the start of King’s Ransom you’ll fail the mission but can continue playing. However, a security guard will alert you that M has been taken hostage in place of Moneypenny. I always thought it was amusing the developers accounted for that.

@@Seethi_C Sorry, I should have worded that better. I meant after you activate the first security system Moneypenny will radio radio Bond to alert him that M has been taken hostage. Fun fact: In the Maiden’s Tower level, the level begins with Zukovsky dying after being shot by Electra, but the dialogue where he actually dies only plays when you pick up the gun he gives you, so if you don’t pick up the gun he never dies. So if you want to keep him alive forever, you can! But that also means him dying is all your fault, so if you want that gun, I hope you can live with the guilt afterwards.

Seriously though, I really loved this game as a child and I think it suffered from having to not only follow Goldeneye (and, by extension, GE's "spiritual successor" in Perfect Dark) but also from not being developed by Rare. I think the only reason I played this more than Goldeneye was because 99% of my friends weren't into Bond OR shooters so I would spend literal hours playing against the Bots. Glad to hear some praise for TWINE because it is a fantastically underappreciated title in the Bond gaming world.

So happy this game is being given its due credit. It’s for sure one of the best Bond games for level design alone. There’s great variety to the gameplay, and the mission objectives are largely memorable. Also, the multiplayer was ballin’. I’d actually put it just behind Nightfire and just ahead of Goldeneye.

It’s more like they actually just programmed more NPCs to be friendly fire or civilians that trigger a mission fail. It probably wasn’t that big of a change to do. In goldeneye there were still mission fail triggers with some civilian or friendly fire deaths, this game just enabled it even more.

@@KetwunsGamingPad Yeah I suppose I was exaggerating a bit. Goldeneye still had non-combatant NPC’s, guess my memory was a bit fuzzy. Still, yeah they are more advance in TWiNE, where some still try to kill you or even fight on your side.

I picked up TWINE N64 late last year and had a blast playing it. Can see several ideas that were fleshed out better in AUF and Nightfire. Definitely overshadowed by its big brother Goldeneye, but is in the same tier as it. The multiplayer is just as fun, plus the addition of bots makes it more versatile.

I was waiting for this one. I really got into this game last year. Like the movie, I find the game seriously underrated. I see why some people prefer this over Goldeneye since it's a much more polished game with more dynamic missions. Tho it does come at the cost of more annoying missions. I failed so many missions because hostages kept getting in crossfire.

I think one of the other things that held back the success of World is Not Enough on N64 was the fact that the true follow-up to Goldeneye from Rare came out that same year. Perfect Dark was released earlier that same year in 2000, so if you were looking for the true successor to it in terms of gameplay systems, design, & controls, Perfect Dark was likely you're better option. Also worth noting that Timesplitters came out that same year on PS2 by Free Radical, which consisted of ex-Rare devs who were part of the Goldeneye team, so yeah, no shortage of Goldeneye-like games to play in the year 2000.

Thanks for reviewing this Calvin. This was my favorite Bond game growing up besides Agent Under Fire and Nightfire. This review really means a lot to me man I have been waiting for this since I first discovered your channel last March or April. Words can’t describe how much I appreciate this during these hard times! You made me laugh more than a view times! I kept rewinding it hoping it would never end! I would live to see you do a full play through of this man! This game is really a hidden gem there’s something very special about it the missions and level designs are better to me than goldeneye by far. TWINE is actually my favorite Bond movie. I always loved the Christmas Jones and Electra chemistry between them and Bond it kind of reminds me what I always wanted from a girl something about it just is so cool. It’s hard to explain but something about this movie and game just really holds a special place in my heart. Some interesting research I found scouring the internet the last couple years before I bought an N64 and did a recent play though I actually found out that there is a scrapped mission called subterranea that was removed from the game that was supposed to be between fallen angel and a sinking feeling pretty cool you can actually hack it into the game and see it’s similar to the caverns map on Goldeneye. Also there is a playable version of the thanes castle area that you can glitch into. Very cool. Also a test level called crate yard. And another cool bit of info is that a prototype version leaked a few years ago that is pretty much the same but still cool to check out. I believe there is some different guns and a couple more unseen levels to discover. Sorry for the long comment I just love this game so much. Love you bro can’t wait for more great videos from you in the future. Cheers Calvin.

Thanks so much for this review! This past year, I have went out of my way to build up my retro N64 gaming library and I included The World Is Not Enough (TWINE) as well as Goldeneye 007, so I'm glad to be able to watch your review of both classic 007 games on the N64! I was thinking, would you be able to also do a review on Perfect Dark? As great as TWINE is, it was not only overshadowed by Goldeneye 007, but also by Perfect Dark being released in the same year. While TWINE is the 007 successor to Goldeneye on the N64, Perfect Dark is actually considered to be the spiritual successor to Goldeneye with Rare building upon the same engine. When given the opportunity to renew their 007 license, Rare declined it since they felt a bit tired after exhausting themselves in the world of 007 with Goldeneye and wanted to make their own unique first person spy sequel of sorts with Perfect Dark. Incidentally in Perfect Dark, the primary agent Joanna Dark is a British agent. I think it'd be great if you're able to do this especially with endlessly waiting for No Time To Die to be released. Even though Perfect Dark isn't technically a 007 game, it'd still be fitting to review it since again, it's a successor of sorts to Goldeneye 007. Keep up the good work!

Fun Fact: Near the end of the Fallen Angel Level, if you shoot Elektra in the wrong place, thus only injuring her, she immediately kills M and keeps shooting at you. If you still don't kill her, a cutscene plays where you see the sub go underwater.

I didn't know your channel, and I'm so glad to find it and see a Bond fan bringing up this game. As a kid I didn't have an expansion pak so I had to speedrun it if I wanted to finish it... and that's exactly what I did each time! I loved it, a lot more than Goldeneye even. Now I love both game for different reasons, TWINE is way more dynamic and cinematographic, while Goldeneye is a lot more hardcore and demanding in the gamplay department... but TWINE had friggin bots and I spent hundreds of hours fooling around with the multiplayer with friends (or alone trying to find different ways to troll the IA into doing silly stuff.) To this day I really hate how underrated and overlooked this game is, being one of the very best on the whole console catalog right up there with Goldeneye.

Loved this video, I've never had the chance to play the N64 Bond games so it's good to see what they're like. It would be cool if you did a video on the PC version of Nightfire, it's so different to the others and a bit odd as a game but also very fun.

My mom knew a guy who worked at a place called Game Force. He said if I wanted any games to let him know. I had told him I wanted James Bond on N64 and he gave me this instead. I took it over to my neighbor's house and we had so much fun playing multiplayer with bots, that we opted to play this instead of Goldeneye (which they received later). When we found out that stuff could be unlocked through the single player campaign, we started playing that together to unlock more multiplayer content. I really liked the watch feature and all the little gadgets that were introduced. Personally, I always enjoyed this game and Perfect Dark over Goldeneye. Your video reminded me that I really should revisit this one.

0:40 - It's not JUST the fact that we were moving on to the following gen. TWINE's competitor was, believe it or not, Bond's former developer Rare. As Perfect Dark, their M rated, spiritual successor to Goldeneye, was also out that year. And poor Eurocom, who otherwise had a solid Bond game, had to compete against that.

Elektra's "torture chair" is actually a mechanical garrote which was an execution device that was used throughout spain and its empire from the 1760's until 1958 when it was replaced with shooting in spain, although it was still used in the philippines until it was replaced with the electric chair in 1969.

I love this game! I remember seeing a single screenshot of this in Nintendo Power back in the day and being like "They're making another Bond game!! YES!" When it came out me and my cousin played the heck out of it. Pound for pound I've always considered it on pretty much the same level as Goldeneye. Late N64 games really are a whole different world than the early games--developers really started pushing the hardware to the max, and as someone who never had a Playstation it was mind blowing to see them pull off fully voiced cutscenes. We also loved all the new multiplayer modes and the fact that the game had bots so it made multiplayer matches way more interesting!

In regards to video games inspired by Bond you may want to check out Evil Genius, and its belated sequel coming out at the end of the month. Effectively an RTS base-builder where you play a bond villain building their lair (Think Blofeld in YOLT) Great video again!

For some reason a lot of the R and Q dialogue is only ever heard on the easiest difficulty, worth going through it just to hear some of the dialogue there, mostly explaining the grappling hook, the bomb in the subway, and a few other locations. In Midnight Departure you can get into the truck that Davidov uses to get the airfield and it'll drive you there if you get in it instead of him. The opening cutscene in Turncoat has a second Bond spawn in for a second before the camera cuts to that second Bond where he then points to the board, this is not shown in this video though.

I prefer this game to Goldeneye personally. The atmosphere and the gameplay are refined to a point Goldeneye simply could not do for the time it was released. Eurocom really knocked this one out of the park. They also made my personal favorite Bond game ever, Nightfire. I always wished the spinoff Bond games like Nightfire, Everything or Nothing or Agent Under Fire had gotten live action movies made for them. But that is a Bond fan dream really. Great video, brings me back to my childhood. I still pop this game in til this day on my N64 and enjoy its astounding gameplay.

This is the fastest I've ever clicked on a video. I got this game as a kid due to a fluke - my dad had promised to buy me some random PS2 game I'd wanted, but it was out of stock so he convinced me to accept this weird spy game from the bargain bin as a compromise. Good job he did too, as it's what got me into Bond! I'm excited to see you finally having a look at this one, Calvin!

That looks like a cool game I'm glad you added a Sherrif Pepper and the funnies made it great fun to watch. I also rate Nightfire that one really put you in the story and action because it's not based on a film you didn't know where it was going to go so it worked on another level. Games aren't just about shooting but exploration environment and story...and characters. I do play the odd Bond game its a good way to get a Bond fix between films - the hardest thing for me is getting to the next levels. Every level for me is a Skiing Level. LOL

I had a lot of fun with this game. It’s a shame it’ll be forever stuck in GoldenEye’s shadow (I think it’ll always be “the other N64 Bond game”) but then I think that’s a problem for Bond games as a whole that GoldenEye was so big that many gamers consider it the only Bond game worth talking about. I struggle to think of another game series so defined by just one title. That being said, I can’t decide which I prefer more between GE and TWINE. Definitely TWINE benefits from the N64 Expansion Pak - which came free with Donkey Kong 64 so if players had bought that they would’ve been fine. Also TWINE benefits from coming out at a time when bigger N64 cart sizes were available so Eurocom were capable of more than what Rare could do in 97. TWINE does feel like it’s pushing the N64 further than GE, but then Rare were pushing it even further around the same time with Perfect Dark (which also sits in the shadow of GoldenEye sometimes). My biggest memory of playing the game was having to replay the Masquerade level cause I couldn’t figure out you had to jump up and ride the rails - I wasn’t expecting the game to replicate the film so closely. My only problem with this game was the N64 controller not having enough buttons. Pressing A cycles through your weapons, but to switch gadgets you have to hold A and press B, but then to switch between alternate weapon modes you have to hold B and press Z, and then to switch vision modes with the X-Ray specs you have to hold B and press A. Which is made all the more annoying that sometimes I’d go to hold A and press B to cycle gadgets, but it’d register as just pressing A and it’d cycle through the weapons instead. I know it’s a minor issue, but when you’re in the middle of a busy firefight it’s easy to forget which button combo does the thing you want, and you end up loosing a chunk of health cause an enemy starts firing at you while you’re faffing about with weapons. Most of the time I just did it through the pause menu, which really breaks the flow of the game. And yes, this wouldn’t be a problem if the N64 controller had more buttons (or had been designed better so the D-Pad could be reached), but I would’ve preferred if they had just put the gadgets in the weapons cycle rather than splitting them up.

Great write up as always, BenCol! I very much agree re the controls. I didn't go into it here as I felt like I didn't have much of a say given that I was playing it through an emulator. But yes, even when I was assigning the buttons to the PS4 controller I was using, some of it ended up feeling VERY clunky. I have a lot of nostalgia for the N64 controller but it's a pain to use on games like this where you want to strafe etc.

If I remember rightly most guns had two modes of firing, machine guns could be auto or single shot. Ppk with silencer or without and the shotgun could go full auto. That rocket launcher you shoot the helicopter with in the walkways levels can fire all four rockets.
