Far from being one of the best Bond games but is there some solace to be found in it at least?

When it comes to Terri Hatcher surviving in the game version, I'm reminded of a joke Crow said about Space Mutiny on MST3K: "I think it's very nice of you to give that dead woman another chance." The question is what happens to Teri's Paris Carver after Bond delivers to safety. Do Bond and Paris get to date again, or does Bond's liaison with Wai Lin complicates things? Did Paris get witness protection, and be able to live in safety away from her husband's assasins? Does she inherit Elliot Carver's money after his death? Questions that will never be answered.

Whoever wrote the script for "Tomorrow Never Dies" needs to expand on the character biography for Paris Carver and keep her alive throughout the movie, as well as the video game, especially when that particular character is portrayed by actress Teri Hatcher. I believe it is valuable to keep Paris Carver alive throughout both the movie and the video game, especially when the general public would speculate on whether James Bond and Paris Carver would ever date again. A possible fan-fiction and alternate scenario for "Tomorrow Never Dies", if given the opportunity to revise the movie, or possibly create a remake, would go as follows: "After James Bond delivers Paris Carver to safety, Paris gets witness protection from MI6, the British government, and the U.S. federal government, which allows her to live safely away from her husband's assassins, first in London, England, and then to New York City in the United States. For the time being, Paris discloses all information about her husband and the operations and scandals caused by the Carver Media Group Network to MI6 in order to assist Bond's mission. Additionally, Paris Carver receives witness immunity from both the British and U.S. governments in exchange for her testimony; she speaks out against the corruption taking place in the Carver Media Group Network to the authorities. "In the process, Paris secretly orchestrates Elliot Carver's downfall behind the scenes. "By then, Elliot discovers too late, at the end of the story, that Paris has taken her revenge against him for gender-based violence during her unhealthy marriage with him, and her subsequent ordeal at the Hotel Atlantic prior to being rescued by Bond. James Bond uses it to his advantage and eliminate Elliot Carver, as well as escaping the scene with Wai Lin, before the stealth boat self-destructs. It is also revealed that Paris Carver, with her insights and insider knowledge about the Carver Media Group Network, guides James Bond, Wai Lin, and MI6 in stopping Elliot Carver and the CMGN from creating an international incident and igniting a war between China and England. "The Hotel Atlantic ordeal has seared into Paris's psyche: Paris has fully confessed to Elliot about her past romance with James Bond, and Elliot punishes Paris by holding her prisoner at the Hotel Atlantic in Hamburg, Germany, hoping to keep her away from James Bond and to dominate her for his personal gain; his dominating nature leaves her devastated and heartbroken. Elliot adds insult to injury by getting Paris pregnant with triplets. Unfortunately for Elliot, his scheme backfires after learning too late that James Bond rescues Paris from Dr. Kaufmann, realizing that both Bond and Paris are long gone following his arrival; by that time, both Bond and Paris escape the Hotel Atlantic together, never to return. Elliot now realizes that he would never see Paris again. This incident marks the beginning of Elliot Carver's downfall, foreshadowing the eventual shutdown of CMGN. "Following her arrival to London, Paris Carver remembers her ordeal and breaks her silence about the violence she has experienced with Elliot Carver, to both MI6 and James Bond, after Bond rescues her and delivers her to safety. Both MI6 and James Bond validate her experiences when she reveals the scars, bruises, and teeth marks to them; she receives these injuries from Elliot Carver. She also realizes that she has made the biggest mistake of her life: marrying someone who is both an unbeliever and an abusive partner. "Meanwhile, James Bond works together with Wai Lin and eliminate Elliot Carver, and then part ways after the mission, especially when the Chinese government has issued another assignment for Wai Lin following the mission. She has advised him to stay on task and that God is watching over them; it is revealed that Wai Lin is an Evangelical Christian and that her parents have worked for the Chinese Government. As a parting gift, Wai Lin gives James Bond a handwritten notecard thanking him for helping her defeat Elliot Carver, with a couple of gospel tracts inserted inside the card; he receives the package after completing the mission. "James Bond is reported back to MI6 to receive a special assignment: protect Paris Carver from her late husband's assassins, as well as her current and future enemies, at all costs. This mission would allow James to rekindle her romance with Paris at the end of the story. By then, Paris has disclosed all information about her husband to MI6, and has made a request to M that would allow James Bond to protect her, and for her to live a life free from all forms of violence. Bond accepts the assignment and assists Paris on inheriting Elliot Carver's money after his death through several inheritances, estates, and wills, making her financially stable for the rest of her life. "Travelling to New York City, Paris Carver returns to her childhood home in the Upper East Side. James Bond comes along with her. Now a lapsed Roman Catholic, Paris plans to beg her family to take her back as a hired employee. Surprisingly, her parents rejoiced when Paris has come home, and is welcomed back with a homecoming party; her parents reminded her that God's grace is much bigger than all her sins. She realizes she has made major life mistakes; one of them involves marrying Elliot Carver for money, whom she now realizes he is an unbeliever and an abusive partner in both dating and marital relationships. She also realizes that she has been backsliding on her Catholic faith and walks away from God when she has become infatuated with Elliot Carver for his high-class status and massive material wealth. At that point, Paris's parents have encouraged her to come back to God and re-dedicate her life to Jesus Christ. In the process, Paris decides to pursue the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the Roman Catholic Church by going to confession with one of the parish priests in the Archdiocese of New York, particularly at St. Patrick's Cathedral, in which she is a registered parishioner at very young age. Much to her delight, James Bond has given his life to Christ as well; he reads all the gospel tracts and the handwritten notecard he received from Wai Lin the entire time. "Sometime later, Paris Carver becomes pregnant with triplets, conceived through gender-based violence she has experienced from her late husband, Elliot Carver, several months earlier at the Hotel Atlantic. She becomes a single mother when she gives birth to her triplets: Pierce, Teri, and Michelle. In light of these circumstances, James Bond resigns from his job as a secret agent for M16 to be with Paris, and another agent takes the role of 007 in his absence. He learns from social media that his Chinese counterpart and former work partner, Wai Lin, is transferred from China to England to work for MI6 and takes the role of 007. Wai Lin informs James via social media that she holds both Chinese and British citizenship prior to taking this role. She also mentions on social media that she is driven by employment equity and the desire to follow Jesus Christ (being the Salt and Light of the earth) to accept the job offer at MI6, and that she has given glory to God for the opportunity to serve MI6 as the new agent 007. "By then, both James and Paris hit the reset button on their relationship; they start dating again, and several months later, both James and Paris finally get married. The story ends with both lovers, now married spouses, attending Sunday Mass together at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown Manhattan. "In other words, James Bond and Paris Carver have reconciled with each other, and they plan to start a new life together." This fan-fiction / alternate scenario would create a much better summary for this movie, and for the video game. In fact, this case would provide a possible precedent for future action movies, especially when the protagonist has a love story with one of the characters within the movie. This type of scenario would also apply to future James Bond 007 video games as well. On a personal note, this fan-fiction / alternate scenario is written as a direct reaction to the need for positive representation of women in the media and in all areas of public life, as well as an opportunity to explore various themes such as women's rights and gender equality in mainstream society, and the blessings for following Jesus Christ (as it is the case for Wai Lin), the consequences of original sin (in both Evangelical and Roman Catholic contexts), and the need for redemption of sins through the blood of Jesus Christ (as it is the case for both James Bond and Paris Carver). (Full disclosure: the actress Teri Hatcher is what makes Paris Carver more likeable as a Bond girl in the James Bond movie franchise.)

Watching this games opening credits, I have to say - Holy crap!! The directors of the John Wick movies was in charge of this game's motion capture!! No, really. Chad Stahelski and David Leitch went on to make John Wick. Stahelski stuck with the series and directed both sequels (with two more on the way), and Leitch went on to make Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, and Hobbs and Shaw. They both worked on this game! Good night, that's amazing!

Reminds me a lot of Tim Miller, who directed cinematics for games like Area 51 and Spider-Man 2, only to then go on to break into Hollywood by designing the opening title sequence for the David Fincher version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but more infamously through directing a certain R-rated Superhero Comedy that's pretty obscure and wound up a financial flop. Okay, okay, he went from Video games to the first Deadpool, aka. one of the best comedy-drama movies of the 21st century. You got me. But seriously. Anyone who insists "Videogames are the devil!!!!1" has never paid attention to the top talent who go from working on video games to creating successful major motion pictures.

The nostalgia hits hard with that callback to the old Special Edition DVD menus. I think I owned seven of those DVDs, and I remember the Tomorrow Never Dies menu screen being my favourite. I also remember it would always fool me about just when I could start selecting the options. My second favourite menu was that of The Man With The Golden Gun, mostly because it would cycle through two great tracks from the film - one when you first entered the menu, another when you returned to the menu from an option.

Thinking about other Bond films that one could make a “The Mission Continues” game around, I think ‘You Only Live Twice’ could work well - having to hunt down Blofeld across the world and take on some original SPECTRE henchmen as you do. You could have a level that involves returning to the volcano base, but since its destruction at the end of YOLT it’s all in ruins and dilapidated, I think that’d be very cool.

Thanks M, can I go and play with it right now?” “Why, of course James. Just as long as you’re back in time for lunch.” “Yaaaaaaaay!” 10:10 “The Facilities” is the euphemism I use for the toilet when I’m in polite society so that line made me laugh more than it should’ve. 15:48 Oh Desmond, I love the guy but geez, him “playing” that game makes the actors in _The Wizard_ look like professional eSport competitors. 29:27 Props to the game developers for actually working the title into the game, that’s more than the filmmakers did. • @SP84Fanatic

A friend of mine gave me his collection of PS1 games many years ago, and this game was in it. I owned 007 Racing and The World is Not Enough on the system, as well as most of the PS2 games (Goldeneye: Rogue Agent being the exception), so I was excited to play this. As someone who loved Everything or Nothing on PS2, I could see why the developers waited until technology improved before trying third-person shooters again. As you said, the PS1 era of Bond games were the first step towards the great ones we'd see in the next generation. My biggest frustration was with the Market District level with Wai Lin. I don't think I ever reached the helicopter battle without dying from the chain guns first. I became so frustrated that I decided to use some cheat codes for invincibility, and I was able to finish that level and move onto the final level. Then, I used the cheat codes again to help me out in the 007 difficulty, just to complete the game. Interestingly, while later Bond games would deny you rewards (in the case of the PS1 version of The World is Not Enough) or even advancement for completing a mission with cheats (Everything or Nothing), this game has no problem with it. If you do play the game on 007 difficulty, the treat you get for beating the game is a cinematic of the stealth boat exploding from the film, followed a montage of previous moments from the game, and the interface that guided you throughout the game ends with a "Good Job 007!" in front of a a fluttering Union Jack background, and then the interface adapted from the film's DVD menu closes over that message with "Mission Complete." This all happens while part of k.d. Lang's "Surrender" is played. This continues the theme of trying to be as faithful to the film as possible. Also, at no point in this game, if I recall, do we see a "James Bond Will Return" message, like many other Bond games and films.

In this games universe, after the events of the game, Paris takes over Tomorrow, re-names it to Yesterday, and then creates a subsidery help magazine line that gives advice to former Bond girls. She was supposed to be the main villain of a 007 game called Yesterday Lives On, and becomes the main villain based on the fact that she wrote a hit piece on Bond and threatened to expose Bonds faked death in You Only Live Twice to the public. She was going to say Bonds death was faked because Bond didn't want to date any of his former Bond girls. Needless to say, Yesterday Lives On was canceled and never released.

This game is the whole reason I'm in to Bond, got a PS1 and this game for my 5th birthday and played the shit outta it but I never had a memory card, so I've played the opening level so many times and then I'd always get stuck on the third mission, the bit when you have to find the keys, then when I was a lot older replayed the game and finished that part in like 5 mins lol

This would be a tough one for a 5 year old to play for sure! Good memories though! I just mentioned in a different comment, I think this was a game that most Bond fans growing up in the 90s had on the shelf but very rarely would be played to completion until much later in life!

Fun fact: There was a separate soundtrack release for the music from this game due to it being scored by noted video game composer Tommy Tallarico. That release actually included his own Tomorrow Never Dies song not featured in the game called Letter to Paris.

This was the game that introduced to Bond as a whole. My brother owned the game when we were young and it was one I was not initially allowed to play as my parents considered me too young. However I was eventually allowed to and I have a lot of nostalgia for this game. After playing this game I ended asking my Dad if I could watch the movies and he agreed and I've been a fan ever since.

I remember this game well, my friend had a PlayStation, whereas I was a Nintendo kid; that's telling my age when I recall the Nintendo vs PlayStation rivalry of the late-90s. Only played to the end only the once, have bizarrely no memory at all of the Wei Lin level. I remember championing the "World Is Not Enough" game on N64 over it, with a measure of justification, but still liked this game. I used to get rapturous excitement over aspects of games and films then: the laser beams for prison bars, barriers that prevented you from straying beyond the map even though their was more space to potentially explore, blank spots wherefrom infinite henchmen emerged, the way the bodies that tumbled into the newspaper rolling machines in cutscenes remained visible for a few moments during game-play, et cetera. I sometimes contemplate buying it online....don't think I will, thanks for saving me the effort Mr Dyson.

_Apparently,_ Style is a score that _only_ ticks over in the skiing levels, and is earned by doing tricks. Elsewhere they left the score on the sheet but gave you nothing to earn Style _with._ Shame, that, you'd think you could turn the Style score into a proto-Bond Moment system in the rest of the levels or something.

Hey Calvin, love all your reviews. I'm a huge Bond movie and game fan. Been doing a playthrough of these recently because I missed a few growing up. Just beat the Wai Lin level after many tries, and boy my heart was pounding as I finally destroyed the chopper and killed the last two guys at the end. Also super glad when that mission complete screen appeared. And I agree, feels like a step up in difficulty from CMGN tower onwards. Also, kinda sucky that the most annoying tedious level in the game is the only non bond level, Wai Lin deserved a level where she kicked some ass! And wasn't reduced to sneaking around shooting dudes out of site. Keep up the great reviews Calvin, super keen to see the Goldeneye N64 review.

Motion Capture Stunts by Chad Stahelski and Davd Leitch. That's the directors of the first John Wick film. At the time they were stunt directors/stuntpeople on films such as The Matrix trilogy. Stahelski went on to direct the other John Wicks, and Leitch directed Atomic Blonde.

Speaking of GoldenEye: I HIGHLY recommend checking out TimeSplitters 2, made by the developers of GoldenEye, who went off and started their own studio, where they did the TimeSplitters games, FPS shooters in a similar vein (at least the first two, the third is more akin to Halo). TimeSplitters 2 is the favorite and is, what could best be described as GoldenEye on speed. The mechanics are very similar, with fast paced arcade shooting and similar feeling to the controls, but more refined for dual analog. I recently went back to it - and after all this time it is still amazing. It's incredibly fun and fast paced, with a really good singleplayer mode with interesting timespanning levels (the first being a Dam, in a GoldenEye homage) and a BRILLIANT multiplayer. I mainly recommend it, because it basically plays like you remember GoldenEye playing, or is the perfect game if you suffer the blues from seeing that GoldenEye haven't aged great.

Boo for not being able to control the BMW remotely Even a bigger boo for cutting out the motorbike chase But yay for letting you play as Wai Lin! Is this the only Bond game where you play as a character that isn't Bond himself? (Save for GE Rogue Agent, but I don't count that one anyway) I'd still like a Bond game where you'd play as different characters who all have different abilities, like the LEGO games have.

When you revisit GoldenEye for the N64, make sure to test out the various control schemes in the pause menu before getting too far in. While none are as good as playing with a dual-stick controller or a mouse & keyboard on emulator (and the default is pretty good anyways for a single-stick controller) you may or may not find one that works better for you. The game has a surprising number of control schemes with even _multiple_ options for using 2 controllers instead of just 1. It's mostly just switching which buttons do stuff but since it's very easy to miss, I figured you should know about it at the start of the playthrough rather than the end & realizing you could've had an easier time. In regards to the video in general, great stuff as usual. Fun to see your reactions & jokes about obscure details/gameplay decisions (like the hotel staff having weapons) and overall just a good time to be had.

As someone whose played a fair bit of old PS1 games through emulation, I think that Black Ops Entertainment were trying to emulate Syphon Filter: Another Spy-Fi third-person shooter with stealth elements, this one of a more gritty variety. The combat looks very similar to Syphon Filter's, with you flicking through targets with the shoulder buttons and opening fire with the Cross button. However, Syphon Filter's controls were actually really good: They supported analog sticks for basic movement, the lock-on couldn't have been more perfect, and best of all: The levels were designed with these controls in mind. Tomorrow Never Dies PSX doesn't have this luxury. The game controls like a Syphon Filter clone, yet has the level design of an action-adventure game like Soul Reaver or Tomb Raider. The end result is a game that's a mere curiosity and manages to make you thankful that EA would eventually nail the concept of Third-Person Bond with Everything or Nothing and From Russia with Love 5 and 6 years later respectively. Just play those two games and the aforementioned Syphon Filter instead, you'll thank me later.

Other third person shooters back then had the first person aim thing and none of them really handles it well. Syphon Filter is basically this game but functional and I recommend it, a great stealth action spy series.

Rare was offered the chance to make a Tomorrow Never Dies video game after their hugely successful GoldenEye, but turned it down in favour of doing their own thing (the TND game that was released was called one of the "most spectacular failures of gaming" by G4 in 2003). Ironically, one of the fan-made Game Mod for GoldenEye many years later would end up being an adaptation of TND, accordingly released to much more acclaim than the actual PS1 disc.
