The 'Women's Cut'-Maryland's only women's prison | Rattling the Bars

For decades, prisoners' rights advocates have called on the State of Maryland to address its flagrant discrimination against prisoners housed in the state's sole women's prison. As The Real News has previously reported, conditions in the Maryland Correctional Institute for Women are akin to "torture," and the lack of resources and services dedicated to incarcerated women amounts to state-sanctioned, gender-based discrimination. Christina Merryman and Ameena Deramous, both former inmates in the MCIW-or the "Women's Cut"-join Rattling the Bars, explaining the conditions faced by incarcerated women in Maryland, and what advocates inside and outside the prison walls are doing to fight for justice, in the first half of this two-part panel.

Thank you, Mansa Musa, "Rattling the Bars," and the Real News Network, for having these courages women on for their stories who served time in America's prison system out of control. Thank you, Christina Merry and Ameena Deramous, for continuing your work outside of prison and explaining the perils of inside our justice system of the prison system. This should be shown on Corporate News everyday, but we also know the real reasons it won't be. Much gratitude and love to all of you. Keep up the great work.

@~27:15, well said ma'am, it's important to expose and demand an end to the deplorable living conditions found inside of prisons. We were sentenced to a term of incarceration. We were *not* sentenced to poor or no healthcare. We were *not* sentenced to unsanitary living conditions. We were *not* sentenced to eating unhealthy/unsafe food. We were *not* sentenced to abuse/neglect from the staff. None of these things were on anyone's sentencing order, and they shouldn't be in our prisons either. Stay strong, solidarity forever ✊

It would be nice to stop the financial exploitation of inmates. That would be nice. Inmates are already paying for their so-called punishment with time and being away from their loved ones. That's enough. It is definitely wrong to make them double pay with both time and the money that they worked for. It's all about the exploitation.

The more I read, the more interviews I watch, the more I understand why abolition is imperative. This system ain't about meaningful, restorative accountability for folks that have done harm and it ain't about helping the victims. It's capitalism in a cage.

All true! If only someone in power cared enough to do something! I spent 4 years in that sh);;/hole. Everything about it was a nightmare. I have written and written and not one response. I just dont think anything will ever get done. As I write this i know for a fact that is is getting worse at MCIW. It’s so sad.

We as a whole must demand the immediate greening of the Prison-Industrial-Complex. With the ongoing climate crisis. All new and existing prisons must be built or retrofitted with environmentally sustainable materials. All water and power must be sourced from renewable resources only. Absolutely no exceptions. Any and all material going to prisoners must be 100% recyclable. There won't be any wastage allowed whatsoever. All meals prepared must be purely healthy vegan dishes. Heavily salted and saturated fats in addition to unhealthy commissary items will be banned immediately. Finally, All prisoners must be educated and indoctrinated towards the environmental movement. All reading and video material within the facility must exclusively reflect that topic. Remember people... There is no Planet B.

@@lordinquis8r679 I don't think so friend. You made the statement so defend it. I'm not saying you're automatically wrong, it's just that I currently disagree. If you want to convince me you're going to have to show me the information. You're the one that brought it up. I think one thing we can all agree on is that while incarceration may be called for in some circumstances, sentences should always be fair, although I do believe special circumstances should be taken into account such as if the person is the primary caregiver regardless of gender.
