The Wire is a HBO American crime drama TV series created by author and former police reporter David Simon. It premiered in 2002, and ended in 2008, with 60 episodes spread over 5 seasons.
I’ve heard a lot about The Wire. It’s always being held to such a high standard. I’m not the most clued up when it comes to TV shows, I have seen some of the more big ones, like Game of Thrones, Boradwalk Empire, Deadwood, Resurrection Ertugrul, the first season of Peaky Binders, the first season of Westworld, and a few others here and there. I’m a huge fan of HBO’s The Sopranos, as subscribers of my channel will know, and when you ask around about other shows similar to The Sopranos that can match it in terms of quality, there is consistently one series that is always mentioned - The Wire. It’s considered a modern day classic, one of the very best TV series of all time.
So I finally sat down and watched the first season of this show, a show that has an unavoidable titanic reputation.

I’m surprised you’re only watching this series now. The Wire is right up there with the Sopranos with much of the dialogue equal and better in parts. I just rewatched Tony and crew so maybe I’ll rewatch the wire now. The careers of Idris and Michael were launched in this show. The lines of Omar is coming and the murder scene are iconic. Wait you’re yet to meet brother Malcone and Marlo these 2 have ice in their veins.

Great review. Just one thing. The criminals are not the only ones in “The Game”. The cops are a big part of it. Without them, there is no game. Everyone in the game knows what they are getting into. The stakes are high and any moment you can get killed. Playing the game properly means you don’t involve “civilians” or people who never signed up for the game. A man’s got to have a code.

It is pretty good but it seemed to be hampered by some hammy acting with the whole Ziggy and Nick storylines, those strands sometimes were overacted and a little cliche, but in general it’s still a great show, it just ranks lower against the other seasons, which i would rate 4,3,1,5,2. The last season is often panned but it’s a perfect finale in my view.

Never understood this argument personally. You can compare not only your personal enjoyment of any two TVs shows as well as judge which one you think is better based on, for example, quality of the writing, plot, actors and cinematography. The question isn’t which one is a better example of the genre, it is which one is better and which one do you enjoy more. Personally Sopranos edges it out for me as there are some plot points in the later seasons of the Wire that I thought could have resolved better whereas Sopranos final season is perhaps it’s best but to say two TV shows can’t be compared is just ridiculous.

I never see the wire as a crime cop show. It's about institutions. The police, criminals, politics, the ports, schools, the media, also deals with families. The wire is written slightly better than the sopranos. I feel like after rewatching the sopranos I can see that they have different writers for different episodes. The Wire however you can tell the writers are the same

It's not season 1 that can be a bit stiff and hard to get through the first time, that's season 2. Season 1 does a great job of bringing you into the world of drug gangs and police procedures, and the people and institutions behind them. Season two then kinda takes a left turn and although the storylines of season 1 are being continued, the focus has completely shifted to the docks, and many of the main characters of season 1 are being pushed to the background in favor of the dock workers. On my first watch it was definitely my least favorite season, and the hardest to get through, but every rewatch made me appreciate it so much more. It's now my second favorite season just behind season 4. But even the worst season of The Wire is better than the best season of pretty much any other show that's ever been made in my opinion, except for maybe The Sopranos, which is a close second for me. After those two there is an enormous gap until you get to stuff like Breaking Bad and Mad Men, which are also great, but can't compete with The Wire and The Sopranos, which are in a league of their own.

  • @hectorsanchez1377

The sopranos is more meme able. The wire is more gritty. The wire is a harder watch because its darker in plot. Wallace getting killed is darker than brendan filone getting killed. Bubbles shooting up after trading copper is a harder watch than chirsthopha shooting up.

The one thing I liked about The Wire that I didn't find in the Sopranos is realistic characters. I loved the Sopranos. I have all 6 seasons and rewatch them from time to time. But I have to admit, other than the man characters, everyone else was a cartoon caricature. The Jews were not just Jews. They had the hats with the curly sideburns and shit. The black gangsters dropped their guns on the floor and held their weapons to the side. A rapper wants to get shot in the ass to sell more records. C'mon man. That's not real LOL. Those scenes are so cringy. But I still love the show. Now the Wire feels super real, damn near documentary.

I don't know if it was Michael K Williams untimely death or something else that has seemingly caused this great show to be "rediscovered". During its original run, it lived in the shadows of The Sopranos and was perennially ignored by the audiences and critics. I can't say it's better than the Sopranos, but I can say I've watched all the seasons more times than I've watched The Sopranos. The fact the technology it is based on is 20 years out of date seems to make no difference. It's all about the relationships, the writing and the actors. Treat yourself and watch the rest of the seasons. Then take a breath and watch them again.

As much as I love Sopranos, The Wire i better. It is written better, has better dialogue, more realistic. But I think the Wire is harder to get into, it doesn't grab your attention, you have to give it your attention. Theres no throw-away storylines or convos. You have to pay attention, but the pay off i large, all the bits and pieces finally come together. The Sopranos i "lighter" it easier to follow

People struggle with Season 1 because you don't know what kind of show it is yet. They also get into it without spoonfeeding the audience. The scene where Lester breaks down how to follow the money to Carver and Sydnor has to be a top 10 scene in the series. This show demands attention to detail and if you werent ready you missed absolute gems.

You are completely correct about The Wire. It definitely belongs in the same category as The Sopranos...BUT there is another. A show that can also easily hold it's own with them and that show is THE SHIELD! Please please PLEASE give it a shot! It's amazing and deserves so much more attention from dedicated talented KZreadrs like yourself. More people need to know about and watch it. After only one watch through, it was rocketed into my top 5 favorite shows of all time.

The characters are not only based on real people but are also played 'by real people' actual gangsters and characters from Baltimore, politicians and so on. It's the best TV series in a lot of ways, I loved breaking bad and never got hooked by the sopranos. I've seen the wire start to finish in a few days run and I watched each episode weekly as broadcast in the early 2000's. Watched in about 10 times overall, still knocks it out the park. Haven't watched it start to finish for years, anyone who hasn't seen it and likes TV is doing themselves a disservice by not watching it.

Christopher can be an idiot, but when it comes to being this Thing Of Ours, he does it well when he's not on junk. I find Tony more relatable than Walter. I had a hard time watching BB. It made me incredibly anxious throughout the show, and Walter sells his soul very early, and never stop telling terrible lies easily proven lies to his son and wife. I also didn't care for the filming style of BB. Season 2 is a bit controversial for most people on their first watch but most people always end up ranking it high up after they rewatch it. Personally, I rank season 2 as my favorite season of The Wire simply because I was able to relate to the cast a lot more than the drug dealers of the inner city. The acting was also phenomenal and I love how the season was filmed almost like a Tragedy in that you SPOILERS Watch the downfall of the entire Sobotka family. The final episode where you see Frank get dragged out of the pier with his throat slit, Ziggy ending up in prison for murder and will most likely spend at least the next 20 years behind bars, Nicky ending up in witness protection and having to spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder for The Greek. So sad but so good.

I tried hard to like the sopranos but so many cliche, unlikeable characters in it and it was doing the routine mafia thing at times. Just couldn’t get into it and bailed out after about 10 episodes.
