I just finished binge-watching the Wire. It was everything I had been told. An incredible achievement. I am still under its spell and I can't get over it. The saddest moment in the whole series is when Carver tries to help Randy and the whole damn system stops him, leaving Randy at the mercy of the wolves and the jackals. I weep because I know there are thousands of kids like Randy who are being tossed away every day and it is inexcusable.

If it wasn't for the final season of the wire I would agree, but once it became the McNulty show it went down hill. I preferred when he wasn't in it as much and became sober. I find the show growing with mobile phone technology to be really interesting. From beepers to cell phones to text messaging to picture messages.

  • @bami2

    @bami2

    5 ай бұрын

The first season of the show was taking place around 2002? MMS (picture messages) was introduced that year and like the phone of Vondas (janky windows mobile) could already send photos via email around that time. I don't think it's as much technology progressing as it is the crew intentionally using older stuff to make it as hard as possible for law enforcement to snoop in. The beepers were already far obsolete by the time the show starts (mobile phones really started getting traction in the mid 90s in favor of beepers), it was more of a code/method by the Barksdale crew to keep people from having their mobile phones wiretapped. You can kinda see it in the later seasons where "burner" phones existed, they had gotten so cheap that you could treat them as essentially disposables.

  • @ryansproviero

@bami2 Places like Baltimore were always behind when it came to technology. It took time to roll out the antennas needed to operate the cellular networks. I was the first in my HS to have a cell phone in 1998. Having a phone in 2002 that could send pictures was a luxury.

Look at his first part (of the 3) there he starts his anaylsis and says the first episode will be mostly spoiler free, and it is. The 2nd part and 3rd indeed have some major spoilers with Wallace and Kima getting shot and Dee getting killed. But those are both in season 1 and early season 2. It also shows Hamsterdam and it's faith and "many" more as you can't really talk about the 5 season without saying any plot points if you want to go in to more detail. As a lot of it builds of each other and is a reaction to something else as most things are in reality. But I still think he only braught up "spoilers" for important parts and if you haven't seen you probably can't place them so good or even remember who you saw. But yeah part 2 and 3 definitely spoil things but there is still so much more to discover and see to just be no argument to not watch the Wire. But if you want to convince somebody to watch the Wire just show them the first part and maybe parts of the 2nd or 3rd or just say they don't have to think about it but just watch it over any other show,... XD

Fantastic job on this. One of the most crucial lessons from Season 3 was when Hamsterdam is discovered by the mayor, and two other key figures (I think they were both politicians, maybe one was a writer, I forget exactly), is that, individually, they all hear about the good that legalization and regulation has done (less crime, less overdoses, etc.), however, they all decide to go public as soon as possible with their disgust in Hamsterdam, all because they're afraid of how their opponents will use the news first. The strive for power in politics really hampers actual, meaningful change.

As I get older, the more I relate to the Wire. It’s so hard to make changes in your organization. Whether you are in corporate America, a police department, politics, education system or even the drug game. Guys like McNulty, Bunny, Stringer, D’Angelo all want to make changes within their systems, yet none were successful and the game continued well after all of them left.

The system is a living entity that unconsciously resists and actively fights change. Just as your body deploys antibodies to destroy invaders, so too does society deploy it's own agents to counter systemic change. The police act against criminals to keep them from overwhelming society, and those same police work against any reform of their own internal system of regulation. The media hates any who would threaten the underlying order of their structure. They jealously guard against outsiders taking their authority while safeguarding the corruption that keeps them in their place in the tower. See Julian Assange about that. Whistle blowers are universally shunned and resisted as your body would fight a virus. This is no coincidence. We are just as cells in a living body of society, all of us replaceable if we should fail in our assigned roles. All of us corruptible too. Power corrupts as power is the greatest agent of change, so it destroys those who wield it, to keep them from doing too much damage to the system. It does the same for any reformers. Intentions are irrelevant, effects trigger response. Too much change is seen as a disease. The system just wants to live, it has no morals but what we bring to it. If our effects are small we can survive within. If we seek great change that system will seek to destroy us.

That's a great point. On reflection, I'm surprised they didn't hit more on prisons. In all seriousness, the show hits on every progressive excuse why someone's bad actions are never his own fault, so why not. Season 6 could be prisons made me do it. Season 7 could be racism made me do it. Season 8 could be lack of government entitlements made me do it. @@Vinny.X i'm decidedly against progressives but I think you really have to stretch to to think this show is endorsing progressive policies or laying the blame at the feet of institutions. In fact, for me, The Wire is a grand statement against progressivism (see the part about blowing up the housing projects in this vid as an example).

I wonder if this was what the writers were intending to do with season six, if they'd been given the chance. We leave season five with Ronnie a judge, Daniels an honest lawyer, and Herc moving up the ladder in the employ of a crooked lawyer. WeBey, Avon, and Chris are all behind bars. WeBey and Chris both have children. Cutty and Poot show us what it's like to move through the world after prison release with a major and a minor record, respectively. Carver in the Western provides a look at how one officers decision can impact a young person's life forever. They could turn their life around or fall deeper into the system, depending on how the arresting officer chooses to play it. I don't know, maybe it's just a testament to how finely constructed the show was, but I could easily see the pieces laid out in place for a season about the prisons.

It probably took me five complete viewings to pick up on everything in this show, but I still continue to watch it every few years, because as the world changes, the Wire seems to become even more relevant. Look at the opioid crisis in America... It is no longer confined to urban ghettos, but is now devastating suburban landscapes... To say this show is prescient would be an understatement!

The Wire ends in such a way that always felt satisfying to me, the characters still are going about their lives and nothing really has changed, yet the story has been told and as a viewer you are simply left to dwell on the narrative itself; beyond the characters at that point, and ultimately encapsulated by the show's broader themes and overall message. A true testament to the phenomenal writing.

That the systems are so resistant to change is sobering and depressing. I don't know what it would take, but there are no easy answers. However, the show did at least show that redemption was possible for individuals. Not easy, by any means, but possible. Cutty and Bubbles for sure. Maybe McNulty, but I have less faith in that one. Bubbles finally going upstairs... damn, that really got me.

Agreed. Nothing I have found has come close. Early seasons of Game of Thrones had great potential, but we all know how that ended. Sopranos too, but even that show doesn't compare. Breaking Bad is very solid throughout, but not as deep & subtle as the Wire, nor as realistic. Seasons 1 & 2 of House of Cards were great, and exciting, but again, fails to continue its first few great seasons. Still looking for a show close to the Wire. Currently on my 5th watch through of the Wire. !

Funny how The Wire flew below the public radar. I first heard of it 10 years after it ended and in of all places a You Tube comment section (like the one your reading now). The comments were arguments between which is better, Breaking Bad or The Sopranos and someone suggested checking out The Wire. I watched the first season on a pirate video site , then ran out and bought a box set of the complete series which I watched 3 times in a row ! I returned to that comment section and thanked the person who pointed me in the right direction. So which is better, Sopranos, BB , Wire? After watching Wire I've come to the conclusion that all 3 are great adventures in their own right.

I live in Australia. I remember they had The Wire on at like 2 am here, and I saw season 1 and got hooked straight away. The attention to detail is awesome but it demands attention too. There's so much you miss. And so much that's relelvant. Take the controversy over the NSA, for instance: the detectives in S1 do, on a smaller scale, what the NSA/Ed Snowden controversy was about. By tapping the public phones near the lowrises, they're gathering all this metadata. They don't go hard on it, but you'll notice they never actually gather audio EXCEPT when the metadata (the phone numbers on the warrants issued by the judge) are targets - but the potential I suppose exists for them to tap any phone call. So it's just very interesting. The Wire is in my view superior to The Sopranos for a single reason, and that is, realism. I used to love Mafia stuff and still do - but The Sopranos was originally supposed to be a drama about an FBI agent. It's about family. That's the theme. It's vaguely but not specifically accurate to how the Mafia actually operates although there's some good stuff there, don't get be wrong. But imagine a Mafia show written by an FBI agent - that's what The Wire is. A cop show written by (1) An ex-cop on the drug beat (Ed Burns), and (2) A reporter who covered the police beat. The realism is just unlike any other show.

That scene of Carver visiting the kids' old hangout always makes me feel depressed for a solid couple hours after I watch it. There's no one there. The hardworking, happy go lucky Randy's off becoming a hardened criminal. Mike has gone from a straight arrow, quiet kid to a killer. Dukie, a kid with a genuine desire and ability to learn and grow is off descending into the depths of addiction. And Naymond, possibly the least deserving of the lot, is off in a completely different social stratum altogether, never to return or look back. That backlot is empty, and all that's left is the graffiti. Lives that could've gone so differently now either destroyed or gone someplace completely different, a little micro community that could've been something gone forever. Sigh.

Yh - I mean, another thing: in The Wire a lot of the 'traditional' formative relationships like family are dysfunctional or non-existent, so you end up being more drawn towards these highlighted moments where people really connect, teach each other and feel genuine camaraderie or affection. In short: where people truly open up. An example would be the chess one you mentioned, or the relationships between Prezbylewski and his students, or between Avon and Wee-Bey in certain scenes

Season 2 had one of the best lines in the whole series. After Frank Sobotka's indicted and he tries to make one more payoff for the grain pier to his friend the lobbyist, the lobbyist takes the money but tells him the grain pier is dead in that legislative session. When Frank realizes he's finished, he turns to Bruce and says, "You know what the trouble is, Brucey? We used to make shit in this country, build shit. Now we just put our hand in the next guy's pocket." This was almost 20 years ago, and it was true then and even more prophetic as it's worse now.

I never contemplated the direct poke at the television industry (because of their Emmy snub) through season five’s take on journalism and media manipulation. I have yet to see a show before or since that has as many actors that gave such high level performances for major and minor characters. I challenge anybody to point out any show that had as many outstanding performances. Every aspect of this series delivered a gold standard - writing, directing, acting, production, music. I don’t even watch tv in the same way anymore. This show literally flipped the script.

D'Angelo's death was the saddest one to me, he was born into the game and when he wanted to get out he got killed. This is in my humble opinion the best show of all time, the acting is excellent, the script is perfect, the scenes without dialogue are excellent and very meaningful, the characters are exciting, and the consistency of the 5 seasons is great, I agree S5 is the 'weakest' one but still very good, my favourites seasons by order are S1, S3, S2-S4/S4-S2, S5

I thought the ending was cool. But the season as a whole was very underwhelming. It centered on McNulty way too much. It strayed from the blueprint a little bit. The wire was like a living embodiment of the city of Baltimore up to that season. In season 5 it became kind of like watching a better version of NYPD Blue. Still very good, but a little bit off when compared to the other seasons.

Probably the most underrated TV series ever. I loved season 2. Still do. The point is the creator was trying to bring light to a problem that was monumental and spread many contexts. It is still a top 3 series for me despite Sopranos, Game of Thrones, and several sitcoms that rate high on my list. That season premiere with Snoop in the hardware store is probably the best season premiere of all time. Rest in Peace, Michael K. Willams. You were a pioneer and one of my favorite characters on both The Wire and Boardwalk Empire.

@@zym6687 Eh, I hated the fucking show but I can't deny that Game of Thrones was a cultural event. Not as big and certainly not as well-received as breaking bad, but a significant cultural event nonetheless. I'm just hoping the book series ends up eclipsing the show in memory. Speaking of which, Game of Thrones REALLY would've benefited by sticking to the Wire format - it actually attempted to do that up to season 4, with constantly adding on new characters and settings and building on the world - and then it went downhill. I saw someone say that it became "more psychological than sociological" and that that was the problem, basically, it stopped being like the Wire - which constantly enhanced the scope of the narrative. The Wire is a masterclass in casual, but heavy world-building.

Each season answered a question: Season 1: who is everyone, what do they do, and why do they matter? Season 2: who are the real gangsters? Season 3: who runs Baltimore? Season 4: how do create people Avon, Bodie, and Marlo? (Middle school aged kids at an impressionable age) Season 5: how does media control a narrative? I grew up in Baltimore and saw so many parallels between Baltimore's history and the show. Pure brilliance.

This show alone is perfection. Every season relates to somewhat part of your life. The last two seasons easily hit me because I was just in school and had a group of friends, and now we're all doing our own thing and moved on from one another. Each character of the kids in season 4 reminds me of my friends. One of my friends reminds me of Dukie, another mike, another randy, and me Naymond. Once I finished the show, I damn near was about to cry because of how much the show is true. I believe the characters I rooted for who wanted to get over the hump didn't, like bodie, Wallace, D'Angelo, randy, and Dukie. Dukies storyline hurts the most because all he wanted was to feel was love and have something constructive in his life. He was blossoming before he had to go to highschool and was doing great. I feel as Prez could've been that role model for dukie and took him in, like Colvin did Naymond.

Excellent!!! As a former heroin addict from Baltimore I can also tell you that the stasis that you refer to is also an allegory for heroin itself. As a drug it keeps a person in a sort of “Groundhog Day” state. Action as inaction and reaction but nothing ever changes. I haven’t bought dope in Baltimore in over 28 years, but bet I could roll up to Baker and McKean (Westside) and cop right now. The system is set up to fail and as you have pointed out The Wire exposes how brilliantly. Even with its poignant argument against the “war on drugs” , nothing has changed. Great vid!! Thank you.

The 4th season is my favorite and is highly regarded in general. The end of season 3 has one major character dying, another sent to prison and disappearing from the show (barring 2 scenes in season 5), and the closest thing to a main character having a small role in season 4 (Dominic Fox wanted a smaller role to do other projects). And the show not only maintains its quality after this, it arguably gets better.
