The Widow Gongo Brewmaster of Nepal 🇳🇵

■ HIMALAYA, MANASLU: In the villages of the mountains of Nepal, a locally brewed drink called Roxy is incredibly popular. It looks fairly simple to brew as long as you have the proper cauldrons, enough firewood and ground down corn or millet.
As a huge fan of this beverage, I've always been curious as to the exact method of its production. As I was preparing to trek the Manaslu circuit earlier this year, I ran into a woman who've been brewing for decades. The method was handed down to her by her father, who in turn learnt it from his father.
Village life in the mountains of Nepal is obviously no walk in the park and one of the ways this woman have been able to raise her family despite being a widow, is by brewing and running a bar for local porters and passers by entirely on her own.
Fascinated that a foreigner took such a keen interested in how Roxy is made in these remote mountains, she invited me to brew from scratch...

Thank you Harald for connecting us with such kind and humble people. Lets be kind and helpfully to each other.

Harald the little child that passed you on the bridge at 10.27 was so surreal. With the noise of the waterfalls and the height most adults would be shitting themselves crossing over. There wasn't a bother on that little one strolling away on their way home to the village. What a tough resilient people they are. Brilliant content as usual. I grew up in the North East mountains of Nepal. We see elders climb like nothing and we follow them. Also the only way we entertain ourselves was to either play sports, wrestle, swim or climb rocks. So yes, when it's your daily life it's normal to walk that bridge. Wait I remember once we climbed rock and couldn't get down so we jumped on the tree nearby. That was scary 🤯

Harald, this is one of your best videos you have ever made....... I do not say that lightly, as you go to amazing places and we get to meet incredible people and see amazing places. This one though with the climb up that mountain, and the people you have introduced us to and the story of the road made this such a personal video. Very moving. Such beautiful people and they deserve much happiness and to see a steady stream of tourists again. You can see by the excitement of the lady in the red top how much they love to see people, and the words of the man saying its dark now he doesnt see many people any more. Very touching. El doggo was so cute.... but the attacking plant humour had me in tears....Sunil saying Europeans are so sensitive.... poor guy getting so stressed.... so so funny..... he is such a nice man.... and you have nearly broken him with the walking, the plant humour and going on about his jeans... enterntainment level priceless.... poor guy has even started drinikng..... I have really loved this return to Nepal series.... looking forward to the next chapter.

I've heard thunder like that once in Kroatia, also encompassed in a very mountainous terrain, it was absolutely intense and not comparable to thunder on a flat landscape. How the sound rolls through the mountains and gets intensified is awe inspiring and haunting. Turns it into something entirely new, like a sound that was ment to strike fear. Like Zeus was maniacally laughing, bringing down mountains. It sounded so horrible and I also barely slept. Never knew how scary thunder could be until that night, and I never heard anything like it since!

I was gonna ask, but I guess you really have stayed around Himalaya and NEpal for a while now. That is really cool. That's how i wanna travel too. Not just be a place for a week or so, but really get to know people, and stay for a while. I like this abt you. I knew you where already, but shows you are legit in your travels, and as a person. Really care about the people you meet. It's inspiring!

That lady in the red dress was a firecracker! 💥 I bet she wins all the arguments with her husband. Here's a trick to check potency and purity. We use it here in the mountains with moonshine. You can shake the jar really hard and there will be big bubbles if it's pure. Higher alcohol content.. and if they are smaller then its lower alcohol content. They dissolve very fast. We also use water to temper the shine to balance it out. You can't drink pure shine it will dry out your mouth give you cotton mouth! Excellent work you are showing the lifestyle of a simple mountain people great work Haraldo! Love these videos.

36:00. I can't remember which house we went in. But while we were there, it started raining and we thought of stopping the Night at Jagat. We went to one of the houses and we both had a cup of RAKSI which gave us the energy to continue. Later, when the rain stopped, we continued and stayed at Salleri, the next stop. The road was kind of slippery. I also remember admiring the traditional houses at Jagat. Quite a beautiful place. You are bringing back the memories, Harald. Thanks!
