The Forbidden Kingdom: Mustang Adventure 🇳🇵

■ MARPHA, MUSTANG: Nepal, although geographically a rather tiny country perched up on the Himalayan plateau, sandwiched in between India and China, is still home to countless older Kingdoms. One of these is the ancient Kingdom of Mustang which dates back all the way to 1380 and wasn't fully merged into Nepal politically speaking before 2008.
Although it doesn't technically exist as a sovereign state anymore, and it's capital Lo Manthang was in Upper Mustang, it's borders extended past the little town of Marpha, whose ancient Thakali culture is very much alive today. Religion, customs, architecture and food have been remarkably well kept alive here in all its glory.
Some of the buildings in Marpha, although of modest construction, contain materials that are 400 years old. The city is also home to a Tibetan community which adds to the history on full display here.
All this is of course absolutely fantastic as international travellers are able to get a peak back in time as to what life, culture and architecture was like in the Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang hundreds of years ago.... and that was indeed my goal as I boarded my 14 seater airplane in Phokara bound for Jomsom.

37:49 Mustang became a part of modern Nepal in the 1700s, when King Prithvi Narayan Shah initiated his military campaign resulting in modern day Nepal. During the campaign, some kings who peacefully agreed to come under his kingdom of Gorkha were given special local rights, whereby they could rule locally as king, but the kingdom itself would be part of Nepal politically. When Nepal became a republic in 2008 and the Nepalese monarchy proper was abolished, the last surviving mini-kingdom within the larger Nepali kingdom was also abolished.

Her explanation of the workings of the community is pure gold ! And you struck more gold with that Thakali Thali. I would've loved to know the names of the dishes. The ghee she put on the rice is simply clarified butter.

I cannot thank you enough Harald for ALL your travel vlogs. You were my saviour in the time of Covid thinking one day when the world is open I will go off to all those places. Even though I haven't gone that far (friend with cancer needed support) I would look at my small trips through Harald's eyes. Even my own town is more interesting. The trips to London for work & talking to my cab drivers from all corners of the globe opening up the world, their lives, their food, their homelands. Thanks again for a fantastic view of a beautiful location.
