I Rented a Korean Hanok House 🇰🇷

■ Seoul, South Korea: A Hanok is a traditional Korean home which were common up until late in the previous century. Now many of them are used as rental units for tourists looking to experience something other than a Western style hotel.
So what was my experience staying in a Hanok in Seoul like? That and much more in today's episode from Seoul Korea.

I'm equally confused about how those laundry sticks work. But I have an ingenious, foolproof strategy when it comes to the toilets: just unplug the damn things. Seriously, that's what I always do in Japan. They don't need electricity to flush and that's all that matters. I don't want flashing lights, beeping noises and spurts of water shooting who knows where. Just flush. Then I courteously plug it back in for the next person who is presumably more sophisticated than me and will make use of a high tech toilet. But when it comes to certain things, sometimes simpler is best. I don't know whose body that is at 26:16, but I'll take it, and the gold chains.

As a Finnish person I found this sauna configuration quite intriguing! They have traditionally hot water flowing underneath the main floor structure whereas in Finland, the Sauna mecca of the Globe, we have one distinct sauna stove where all the heat emerges from. Many different methods work for sure, I'd love to try some of these different styles. Mayan style in Mexico also interests me a lot, perhaps should give it a try there! Anyways a great vid once again. Keep them coming!

Video time 23:25 The wooden contraption is the mill. A person or persons would press down the double Y ends to raise the single post on the opposite end and let it drop to bash the nuts, grains, etc. Sae Jong king who created the Korean alphabet (Hangul) was completed in 1443 and published in 1446 along with a 33-page manual titled Hunminjeongeum, explaining what the letters are as well as the philosophical theories and motives behind them. The manual purported that anyone could learn the alphabet in a matter of days. People previously unfamiliar with it can typically pronounce Korean words accurately after only a few hours of study. This meant even peasants could read and write Hangul.

I am Korean. Even until few dacades ago, our mothers often using the tool when smoothing the surface of cotton sheets instead of ironing. It is called Dadumi, it consists 2 wooden round bats and one flat under stone. They fold the damp sheets in multi layers and beat them with bats like drum stick, corner to corner multi thousands times and it gives the sheets flat and shiny texture. I think it also released mothers' stress.

Fast forward to 2000 and they are inside bidets😂 All the floors in the house are heated with a water heater electric but before it was a coal type and many died from carbon monoxide. I can honestly say the people, food, and country are amazing!

Harald, I highly recommend reading into Hangul's history (Korean characters). Its the newest writing system in the world! It was commissioned by a king many hundreds of years ago (I forget exactly perhaps 1400?) Anyways, it was actually banned for hundreds of years due to it being TOO easy to learn (peasants were learning to read = bad). It was not until the Korean war in the 20th century that Hangul was made legal and became the standard for Korean writing.

About the laundry sticks, actually they were used for ironing: Dadeumi (Korean: 다듬이) is a Korean traditional ironing method where two women knelt on the floor, facing each other across a smoothing stone, beating out a rhythm on the cloth to press out its wrinkles and soften it.

4:40 in the past the korean language didn't have it's own writing system so they used chinese characters to write korean. Only aristocrats and scholars knew how to write using them. Then King Sejong created a simpler writing system and better adapted for the korean language 'Hangul', thanks to that common people very quickly learned how to write and read korean. In modern times koreans cannot read and do not know chinese characters anymore.
