The Varanasi Experience: $600 USD Hotel Mistake 🇮🇳

■ INDIA, VARANASI: When I think of India I think of Varanasi. My expectations were thus high for my first ever visit. I knew I had to swim in the river or my visit would simply not be complete.
But other than a holy river Ganges swim my plans were open ended. A historic hotel would be the icing on the cake I thought so I opted for renting the most expensive hotel room I've ever seen in India.
After checking in I went exploring the mean streets of Varanasi to see if this ancient Indian city lived up to expectations....

We are spending huge money as a country on cleanliness at village, city level nowadays. Hopefully this situation gets better in future. But remember for 1.4 billion population you need huge money, infrastructure for sanitation, daily garbage collection which will take long time given that we are still developing nation and have other bigger aspirations. :) ❤

It is one of the two cremation Ghats. Hindus from different places bring the dead bodies of their relatives to the Harishchandra Ghat for cremation. In Hindu mythology it is believed that if a person is cremated at the Harishchandra Ghat, that person gets salvation or moksha. Ganga Aarti is perhaps the most important event related to the holy river. It involves the chanting of hymns, fire, flower, and more. The idea is to show gratitude and respect to the river, and ask for its blessings.

Paan is basically a mouth freshener / palette cleanser after a meal - it's basically the Indian after dinner mint LOL. It has coconut, sweet rose, betel nuts, fennel seeds, and other spices typically in it - the betel nuts will give that minty taste. It's an acquired taste like beer, and if you had it as a kid, you crave it when you come across it freshly made. As for the lady outside the hotel speaking to you, I couldn't make out exactly what she said, but I think she was telling you to keep your camera with you, and not let anyone try to take anything from you - I think she was just trying to give you safety advice in general given some of the con artists / touts in the area.

The lady outside the hotel was just saying "non-sense", i mean, she spoke normal hindi/bhojpuri and I could understand it, but the things she was saying made no sense in that context. It felt a lot like she had some kind of problems and was just ranting about it? She was telling about something that her in-laws had, her dad had, but never told what they had lmao, and she was telling Harald to shut his camera, and stop doing the things he was doing and that he should mind his own business and that she didn't understand anything he was doing. Hi Harald, as an Indian, I think I owe you an explanation of the experience you had with the "Aghori" baba. The Aghori community is a very special small sect of Hinduism. Their philosophy is that nothing in this world is good or bad, or, dirty or clean. Everything in your life is just an illusion. So your home, your money, your career, your loved ones, even your feelings are all just illusions. So they experience life in its raw form, where we are nothing but stardust. Their quote is "Bhasma Hi Satya Hein", which means the only truth in this world is the ash that remains after the body is burnt, everything else is just "Maya" or illusion. That's why they will not have a normal chit-chat with you. There is no meaning in it for them. What consider rude is just a normal communicatiob for them because being nice is just an illusion for them. In the end, we don't know what we are doing what we do, and why we are doing what we do. They might however let your experiene their way of doing prayer and all. But be careful because, afterall they are also human beings, who perhaps have psychological issues or have developed such conditions. So it may be also be risky. Aghoris are just there. They dont attack anyone, they dont steal anything, they dont do any harm. But they also dont like to be bothered by anyone.

The crow fighting the monkey was kinda epic. N the dude using his own money to feed the pigeons, what a legend. Varanasi seems like quite a magical place

I enjoy these videos. I love learning about India and especially, Varanasi. You made me feel like I was there, myself. Great video journalism.
