    The only people who think transformers is/was dead are people who think it lives and dies based on the live action movies. When the truth is the success of the live action movies is more a measure of how successful it is at drawing in casual fans. How many of those casual fans become hardcore fans with each movie release is impossible to know. Point is though is that the there have always been hardcore fans of transformers and they’re what kept it going through the very quite periods between G2 and beast wars, in the two thousands the forums and conventions are what convinced paramount that a live action movie based on a cartoon made to sell action figures in the 80s could find a big enough audience to be profitable. Even though the Michael bay movies sucked ass, they were phenomenally successful at drawing in lowest common denominator audiences but the hardcore fans went as well. They were more or less a foregone conclusion because no matter how bad those movies were fans went primarily to see transformers in live action even if they only vaguely resembled what transformers are supposed to look like, and then to see for themselves just how awful they could possibly be. There’ll always be that curiosity among the hardcore fans to consume new transformers media even if it’s almost certain to be bad. That’s partly what makes it such a bankable franchise for hasbro. That and adult collectors are insane and they buy up every toy hasbro and takara produce even without the need to have a new cartoon or movie supporting it. Hell, the fumes of G1 have been one of the biggest drivers of toy sales and that’s bled into new media like the Netflix series.

    As someone who’s been in the transformers fandom for almost 10 year I can confirm that it’s shockingly non-gatekeepy. Even though it’s a franchise that everyone knows, it’s actually quite niche and most people would just be happy that new people are showing interest in it. I was so pleasantly surprised when this video appeared in my feed, and I’m glad you seemed to have a nice time and are promoting the community! 😊

    My opinion, as a long term Transformers Fan myself, is that because there have been so many different iterations of the Transformers (G1, G2, BeastWars, Unicron Trilogy, Prime, Cyberverse, etc.) that the TF Fandom as a whole has long ago learned to live with one another. So while we in the fandom have our favorite iteration or type, we don't reject new members brought in by some other version of Transformers... and have less hostile infighting that many other fandoms who had historically not been subject to as much changes over the years.

  • @unstoppableExodia

    @unstoppableExodia

    Жыл бұрын

    @@tekcomputers yeah that is it, the fans most likely to get accused of gatekeeping are hardcore G1 fans who don’t care for most if not all of the newer reimaginings. I would fall into that category of the fandom because I grew up with the original series and it’s the only iteration that I care for and after decades of watching hasbro make poorer decisions and green light absolute shit like the Michael bay movies it’s hard not to become numb to it and be forced to accept the missed opportunities for what they are and to not take it out on the fans who do like the stuff that I don’t. Newer fans who can’t appreciate G1 are frustrating but they’re a symptom of a franchise fractured by poor decisions.

  • @thefurry7165

    @thefurry7165

    @@unstoppableExodia one of the reasons newer fans don't tend to appreciate the G1 cartoon is because it's just not that good compared to most of the newer stuff. Not the American part at least, the Japanese sequel series (Masterforce and Victory) might have a lot of the same issues but they tend to be more enjoyable in general. Also the Bayverse movies are more accurate to the G1 cartoon than you give them credit for, both G1 and Bayverse put action and spectacle first, with the difference that Bayverse has an actual budget

As a Turtles fan, I hope you got to meet Peter Reneday(voice of Splinter) there! I'm glad you had a good time. I do hope you come back, even if it's not for a video. Although you definitely don't need to buy the premium weekend pass next time.😅 That's mainly just if you're super into the con exclusives. 99% of people are fine with just the regular weekend pass, which is much cheaper. And you can still buy the exclusives in the dealer room on the Saturday until they eventually sell out. But yeah, you definitely did not take a ticket from anyone else. I don't think the premium tickets even sold out until just before the convention. And even then, like I said, you could have still bought the exclusives inside the dealer room on Saturday. We slept in the car at a rest stop the first night and only made it there for Saturday. I had 20 dollars to spend and it might have been the most exciting moment in my life up to that point. I know fandom cons can be overstimulating, stinky, and sometimes gatekeep-y, so I'm glad to hear you had a good time and that the TF community treated you well. For further reference on the Unicron, that is actually a recent release through Haslab. Essentially, Hasbro has its own internal crowdfunding avenue with which they pitch high end collectors grade merchandise for various franchises that they can't viably mass produce, either due to size, complexity, or obscurity. Things like a fully painted scale model of Razorcrest, the ship from The Mandolorian, a three foot tall figure of Galactus from Marvel (Unicron is basically the Galactus of Transformers, funnily enough), or a functional nerf replica of the needler from Halo. Its limited in the sense that they were made to order and only for that pre-order window. The reality is that a super rare and expensive figure like that is a rarity, these toys aren't initially released with any built in rarity so its only really old convention exclusives that people COULD fight for, but most of the times those are just previews of a new series, or unofficial repaints of older figures made to look like a character that wasn't featured in that same series, so even those aren't likely to be on the majority of peoples radars. The reality is that there are so many characters, and they've been iterated in in multiple distinct waves, that the collections for most are very personal. Thats really why you don't see holes on tables and why people aren't ravenous, because its so likely that most peoples pick list had little overlap. With some exceptions its very much the same at Lego cons too (Though those are also fun just because people bring in their custom models)

I paid for parking on Saturday and I was kind of put off by the fact that I had to go all the way back out to my car and put a ticket on my dash, but I didn't question it for some reason; however, walking in again on Sunday morning I was confronted by the event parking people in the hall who asked if I had paid for parking. I told them that I had on Saturday but I didn't know that I had to again on Sunday so I asked if I had to pay again and if the ticket was different. They told me that I had to pay again and that they would know, so my dumb ass paid for parking again, took one look at the ticket, noticed that it was identical to the one I purchased yesterday, and just walked into the dealer room. As a transformers fan and a fan of other things like TMNT, anime, etc; I love that you covered this event. I find that general fan events(even anime cons), many of the patrons are very casual and cool. There are some elitist, but I don’t tend to meet those people. I’d love for you to cover other fan conventions, big and small in your area. And when I come to cons, I always bring a giant bag for merch, it’s just convention 101. Also, I actually have a full size Soundwave body pillow from that same seller with the Optimus body pillow keychain!

    The San Diego Comic Con exclusive with the chromed legs that everyone wanted is the 2013 Titan Metroplex. But actually it only goes for like $200 more than the normal one these days. Both versions were released 10 years ago, so they're both pretty rare now. Also the exclusive version mysteriously showed up at a discount chain in damaged boxes a year ago, and was quickly snatched up by people, so it's slightly less rare now than it used to be.

    As far as comic con toy exclusives go they’re usually known to be really well designed and have a notable quality improvement (so basically like anything else that’s made to be more for collecting than playing). (For example) The ghoulia yelps (monster high) had her cosplaying her favorite super hero and had a comic looking box that you can tell was made to be as much of a part of the merch as the doll. Like yes they are limited in supply but usually the design has a lot of merit

If you got those Super7 reaction turtles for $10 a piece you got a screaming deal. They usually retail for $18 a piece at Target.

    TFcon LA 2023 was the first convention I ever went to and I had a blast. I'm a huge Transformers fan and I repaint the toys into different colors to make different characters. I met so many people, put faces to names of twitter friends, and I spent a lot of money. I spent $1504 by the end of the event. I didn't have to worry about flying because I drove into Burbank from Northern California. I had an exhibitor badge as I was a part of the Toyfusion table in the hall and having that was a great experience. Not going to lie, I got some amazing deals wandering the exhibitor hall on Friday night while everyone was setting up spent a majority of my money that night. I am going again next year 100% as it was pretty easy for me and some other friends of mine will be going next year too. It will be special as it will be the 40th year of the Transformers franchise. I'm so excited!

Apparently the hotel got greedy and Saturday started trying to collect money, a lot of people did not pay and I didn’t hear of any issues arising from that. We as volunteers just told people to communicate with the hotel regarding parking as it was out of our control.

    There are 3 different transformers conventions. TF con, Botcon, and TF nation. They are all roughly the same, and I have been to the last 5 botcons. There is one major aspect of the con that you barely missed, and its something I have never done, but I have heard about it. It is expensive to rent a booth and be a dealer, so people will bring stock, put it into their hotel rooms, and sell transformers merch out of their hotel room outside the convention. I've also heard of parts parties, where people have loose parts and incomplete figures that wouldn't sell easily at the dealer's room, but people try to complete their incomplete figures for cheap one little piece at a time. It's crazy to think that the con generates a mini black market where ever it goes. The TF community often feels small, so these events are great! I've made a few long terms friends from botcon, and they are my only friends who like transformers. Botcon will be in new jersey a few months from now , and I'm really excited for it! I've never heard of some one reviewing cons, so thank you for shining a light on TF con!

    I’ve always wanted to go to tfcon! when i saw this video i damn near lost my mind. Unicron is a pretty big character in the fandom, pretty much cybertron’s version of the devil. it’s a giant god that’s the size of a planet. also as someone who has only been in the tf fandom for 3 years, everyone is incredibly nice, there are years worth of lore and different shows. there’s toy collectors, show fans (tfa, tfp, rb, g1, bw etc.) movie fans, tf marvel comic fans, idw comic fans. their are fan shows and there are still shows coming out like tf earthspark that has previous idw comic artist designing characters, and previous voice actors from other tf shows. you would legit never run out of content to consume and the fandom has not and probably won’t ever seem dead just because of how massive it is. anyway love your videos!!!

    As a 43 year old Ninja Turtles fan (Mikey is the best!) I approve of your turtle fandom. I was tired of explaining to people why I have 3 different versions of TMNT figures, so I made a wrestling ring for them, a little championship belt for Mikey and now Leo and Splinter were stabbed in the back by Raph, Don and Mikey, forming the New Turtle Order and shocking the TMNWS federation! (teenage mutant ninja wrestling championship). But then Kratos made a surprise debut, challenging Mikey for the belt on the next Pay per view! Don and Ralph are challenging Isaac from Dead space and Pyramid head for the tag belts… I still need make the belts, but hey, I haven’t even decided when the ppv is. And who else is going to shock the world and make a debut! I might even have a women’s division, with 2B going against Harley Quinn for the title. In a special attraction grudge match, we have the long awaited, no holds barred hardcore match with MP Optimus prime going against MP Megatron (the gun version!) in a supersized Ring!

    Hi! I'll be honest, I'd never heard of you before, your video showed up in my feed, I'm sure because I'm a Transformers fan/collector and had been watching some Transformers videos. I thought your video was great, really enjoyable, and also very fair and respectful. I went to my first TFCON a few months ago. It was in Chicago, and I went because I was local, it was only a 15 minute drive. I only went on the last day, Sunday, mainly for the dealer's room. I did indeed come away spending more money than I'd intended, and it was nice to meet some of the people behind the online stores I often buy figures from. I'm not sure I'd travel to go to one, but the next time it's in Chicago I definitely will, and probably see what the other days are like too. Anyway, I really enjoyed your video, I had no idea someone was making videos reviewing events like this. I think it's a brilliant idea, and you've earned a new subscriber! All the best to you!

    I was really into Transformers a few years back and attended the Chicago TFcon several times. Was really tickled to see you attending this, haha. One very interesting thing about fandoms that've been running so long and have so many different iterations is that there's kind of something there for everyone, so there ends up being a lot of little sub-areas of the fandom that're totally different from each other. I personally was in the younger queer crowd that got drawn in during the IDW comics run, and we operate much more similar to modern fandoms as a whole. But there is this entire area of mostly older fans who are primarily collectors as well and you can see the juxtaposition/coexistence is very interesting at events like these.

    And to confirm some curiosities you had about vintage, new, fanmade merch - you're right! It is a mix of all of it. There are even really nice (and expensive) figures made by third parties because Hasbro is pretty chill about it as long as they don't call them the official copyrighted character names.
