The Volvo 850R Is A Family Estate That Went Touring Car Racing! (1996 Automatic Wagon Road Test)

When we think Volvo, we tend to think of practical, solid, safe family estates like the 240, Amazon or 740. In the 1990s, Volvo went mad, with front-wheel drive cars, modern styling and aspirations to go racing! The 850 was the result of the most expensive industrial project in Sweden to date, and whilst modern with its aerodynamic design and five-cylinder engine, it was the Turbo variants that added much-needed spice. The T5 came first, but the BTCC beckoned and after shocking the touring car world at the hands of Rickard Rydell and Jan Lammers, the 850 T5-R (and later 850R) was the race car you could put your family in!

I'd love an 850R or V70R - but finding one isn't easy!

You could look at importing one from here in Australia, big benefit of that of course the climate compared to our UK weather.
Watched this as the news came in that Volvo are ceasing production of estate cars. A sad day indeed.

Estates make the best sleeper cars, but apparently, everyone wants an SUV now. 😢

Hi i have just got one of these beautiful cars had volvo v70 for 7years and done over 250 thousands miles so when i had a chance to get a 850r i got one but a very late one bloody hell what a car love it this ones a keeper great video i watched with great interest mine is the colour bright red in your face or what!! It's kool!!!
Just read an article about Volvo stopping making estates. The 850 t5 estate came to mind because it made me love Volvo
Great review. Lucky enough to own two manual 850R estates. Echo all the comments made re the performance. Difference between auto and manual is day and night, if you can ever get the chance to drive a good manual 850R take it. You’ll be blown away. One of mine has been mapped and has a full Firetta system. On boost it sounds phenomenal. As for the top speed claim, these are not limited. Seen 160mph on the clock and trust me, it still had more to go. Even allowing for 10% speedometer error that’s still pretty good for an old school Volvo estate 😊 And those seats… soooo damn comfy 😊

I absolutely loved my manual...... she was a truly epic car.... I miss her
I remember trundling down the A338 into Bournemouth in a diesel Astra and a Police T5 Estate just flew past me on a shout - took my breath away - literally seconds before it wasn't even in my rear view mirror.
Loved driving these back in the late 90s when I had a holiday job at a Volvo and Saab garage, great cars. RIP the Volvo estate of childhood
i have the slightly face-lifted 1997 V70R in saffron orange and i love it.
Very timely, considering Volvo's saddening decision to end the sale of estate cars in the UK. So, so shameful.

Couldn't agree more!
As a life long Volvo fan I completely agree lol. That 5 cylinder sound is absolutely addictive and the personality of these wagons (I've currently got a P2 V70). The wagon is just an amazing car to live with on a daily basis and they are indeed a hoot to drive - pottering along on a motorway or hustling along a twisty B-road - equally happy. We Volvo drivers are a loyal bunch and love to be understated and yes many people sneer or don't get it. But that's good because it stays our secret to a degree and we continue to enjoy.. Brilliant video my friend
I had a black P reg 850R in the 00s I do regret selling it, had it remapped by Rica it used to eat front tyres 😊. I have a 12 reg V70 now good but solid build quality has been lost compared to the 850
Ah, the Strathclyde Police 850 T5R, nicknamed the “Exocet” squad after the manner they chased car thieves and the way the dog shot out the back after them like a missile when the car could go no further.
Iconic car. Love Joe’s excitement, and why wouldn’t you be
Super cool. Love the crisp styling and the engine note.
Just watched this. Just so glad I made the decision to keep my 850R estate manual. Shame she’s just a garage queen now
Nice one. Many have been modded on the after market too. These engines have lots of potential. I daily my later V70R which is practical enough to carry 15 large bags of soil or keep up with friends in their V8 and V12 GTs!

@@terminal-velocity111 Lovely brace of Volvos. 👍I'd have manual too except we take road trips and my other half is very rough on clutches. Are yours still factory spec?
That car is holding up well considering the mileage. Impressive.
My neighbor had a V70R and I thought it was brilliant.
Great car another good video 🚘🚙🚗👏👏👏👏⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍
90s BTCC was fantastic fun. Just one weird thought, why does that interior colour scheme seem Swedish?
They are a fantastic practical family performance car. Its got everything you need. Is the 850R/V70R better than the V70R AWD...? I've been told that the AWD system can have issues and is expensive to maintain. Cheers.
I don't know about the 850R but I've got '97 V70 T5 manual and a Mk.2 MX5. The handling is,erm,quite different.
The Volvo 850R actually had little to do with the touring car. It was no homologation special. The BTCC cars were 2 litre non turbo.
Old Volvos and Saabs , old Audis, old beemers n mercs why did it all change when it was all good

Money, greed and regulation😓
I bought one new in 1994. It was wonderful. Why did I ever sell it!
"Top speed is WELL NORTH of 150..." ....yeah, like 155 when stock. Hardly "WELL NORTH"

Sadly Volvo has gone all woke and electric now.
