1996 Volvo 850 R: Sleeper Estate
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Hadrien Le Flanchec started collecting vintage watches when he was about 12 years old, during a time in his life when he would make many visits to small markets with his grandfather to look at chronographs and divers and tanks, and he remembers always being attracted to special dials and special cases like anyone else, but for him it was always about speaking softly and carrying a special movement on your wrist.
Watches are what drew Hadrien to cars, and his horological tastes have always manifested as very discreet watches that had special movements powering their timekeeping functions, so the decision to drive a factory hot-rodded Volvo station wagon should be no surprise, seeing as it very much follows that trajectory. An odd but formidable competitor in motorsport guise, the long-roof 850R remains one of the coolest Q cars in its road-going form.

Today I´m retired but I´ve been working as a taxidriver for almost 30 years. One of my funnies memories (of many!) is when I was hired as a driver for a weekend in a 850R. An urgent delivery came in on the radio from the hospital in Kristianstad, south Sweden to the hospital in Lund. It was blood to a child who was in urgent need for it. In those days we could call the police and get escort. I did and told them all the facts of what car I was driving, the registrationnumber and so on. The answer I get was: "You do it better alone, drive as you like, I call all patrols out there to look into another direction if they see you, but drive carefuly!!" I did the transport in 32 minutes. About 153/km/h/average and flat out wherever it was possible.

I am 71 years old and and have been a Volvo fan/ owner since I was 19 years old . I have owned 10 Volvos during my life and still have 4. One of them is a 1997 850R Turbo as my daily driver which is red as well and my wife drives a 1998 Volvo Cross Country Turbo. I love the 5 cylinder engines in these cars. The Cross Country makes 4 Volvo Wagons and I have loved them all. In fact, we still have a 1985 Volvo 245 Turbo as our back up and my SUV for fishing and camping. American young people have just begun to recognize the quality and performance that these Volvos offer, please be safe and with good maintenance (most of which you can learn to do yourself, your wagon will last as long as you want it to. But I have to warn you, they become part of your family.! Best wishes from Atlanta. The old professor

Totaly ageed with you sir . I am only 30 years old, but for last 7 years i drive only petrol volvos and i maintain them myself and i love them all, because these cars are built for life. I have 850 2.4 inline 5 for my wife, xc70 2.5 turbo as daily, 740 2.3 turbo as a weekend car and recently bought 240 2.3 carburator for my hoby. Looking forward to buy some nice xc90 2.5 turbo for family usage and some long trips around Europe. Best wishes form Latvia.

The past few vids they uploaded have horrible background music to the point I rather bail on the vid vs sit through it.

Not only is it too loud, but not even good music. It’s that awful royalty free generic rock n’ roll riff that producers use to pump up the excitement of the video, but it does nothing but reveal a lack of interest in the subject.
Petrolicious I love your films but the music library you’re pulling from is terrible. I’d rather no music at all, let’s just hear the cars and the stories rather than this bad 50’s / 60’s diner-rock, it’s honestly distracting.

The editing looks hurried, music too loud, and I don't mean the genre. I love rock, but I can't feel the passion in this video. Feels like any other car guy video but with a Petrolicious stamp on it. Not that tasteful. I was hoping for a great video since its Petrolicious, and was looking forward to this car since I'm a Service Advisor at Volvo.

Joaquin Miguel De Guzman I left a similar comment above, it sounds like they have a new editor that does NOT understand the concept of this channel. It's sad honestly, the way the editing use to emphasize the passion and emotion of the content, now it just drowns it out and is obnoxious!

The 850R Wagon is a cool car. And the 5cyl motor is a masterpiece, it makes a wonderful sound!
The Europeans made so many great Estate/Touring cars in the 90's and early 2000's. The BMW M5 Touring, Mercedes AMG (The Hammer?), Audi RS4 Avant, and of course this Volvo. And word is Volvo's Polestar wing is making a Touring/Wagon version of their new sedan. Sadly, as with almost all the great European Estate/Touring/Shooting Brake/Wagon cars, I'm sure we won't be getting it in the U.S. Great video on one of the great 90's "sleepers." @@JDsHouseofHobbies I have a friend who has been looking at new/newer high end SUV's. Stuff like the BMW X5, MB G-Wagen, Porsche Cayenne, etc. I told him "I realize you need a big car for the kids and all the stuff you do with them, but that doesn't mean you can't have a really cool, fun car. As far as SUV's/crossovers go those are all great choices, but I've seen a few MB e63s AMG wagons for sale that IMHO I'd drive in a heartbeat over the others." I'm currently in the process of "hot rodding" my e39 540iT to use as my DD. Anyone who thinks wagons are ugly or slow or "grandma's cars" obviously have no idea what they're talking about because for 25+ years now there have been some flat out awesome European Touring's or Estate's or Wagon's or whatever you want to call them.

My 1st car I ever purchased was a 2006 Volvo S60R! This thing ripped with the turbo in-line 5 throwing out 300hp & AWD off the lot! I added a 2.5 cat exhaust, cold air intake, turbo down pipe, & ECU mods. Greatest car I ever owned so far. Car ended up getting hailed out at a wedding & I took the money.
The noise of that white-block is just fantastic. Maybe I need to go drive mine a little bit

That's a beauty! Killer sound!
Learned to drive in my dads green 850r... Epic car and sound!
I've come back to this video several times, and each time i can't help but smile. Since I also have a keen interest in watches (vintage and modern), I almost feel a kinship with someone who knows what "does it" for him, and has little to no interest in "flex-factor", be it the watch on his wrist or the car he's driving. Of course, for me, the watch I see him wearing (Yema "yacht-timer" style chronograph, BTW) as well as the 850R, is mad-cool, in the manner of "if you know, you know."
I have a 1996 850 turbo sedan. Bought it new, and like it as much today as I did 26 years ago. The 5 cylinder engine is great.
