Like that one time when they dropped an airborne corps across the Dnieper river directly on top of an active German Panzer division and an active German mechanized division with almost no air cover and without bothering to suppress the AA defenses? "Didn't do too hot" is underselling it. (Vyazma airborne operation is what the operation was called by the way)

The Vyazma Airborne Operation comes to mind. The Soviets dropped an Airborne corps across the Dnieper river directly on top of an active German panzer division (and a mechanized division as well) due to shitty aerial intelligence and they did it with almost no air cover and without suppressing the AA defenses. It was a massacre.

That's because while Soviet and later Russian doctrine emphasizes special forces they are often not actually properly trained for the operations they're supposed to do and the commanders, both in high command and field command, are even less capable of their actual employment. Not that the general army was or is well trained for its job either.

@@MajinOthinusAt least Soviets had the industrial capacity to actually deploy their VDV assets in sufficient enough numbers and potentially recover from whatever casualties they took. Modern Russia doesn’t even have that. Their aviation industry is mostly gone, arms industry had to survive on export contracts rather than state ones. If VDV as a corps survives Ukraine, I’m not sure how long they’ll need to rebuild.

@@MajinOthinus I wouldn't be so categorical, most badly planned VDV operations were done either in a desperate context (WW2) or as part of a larger far too ambitious plan that didn't really take into account local specifics (Ukraine, Chechnya and Afghanistan). I think they are well trained but how do you want them to hold an airport with absolutely no support because their mechanized support got into a traffic jam or some hill despite being surrounded by enemies specializing in guerilla tactics? Those kind of mistakes are not tied to the russian doctrine but to how imperialistic nations have often a way too positive assessment of their military capabilities. Germans did the same with Stalingrad, french did the same with Dien Bien Phu, British in the Netherlands or Americans and Chinese in Vietnam. These failures are simply tied to overflowing pride and arrogance in a few medal covered cronies who think they can rule the world as they please. You can laugh at the VDV and Russia all you want but be carefull that your country doesn't end up the same way.

Swimmy just wiped an entire towns worth of people with the Karl-Gerät.
