The USB-C iPhone Mod - Proof of Concept

I'm building the World's First iPhone with a USB Type-C port. It needs to support charging and data transfers. This first part is about getting the electronics to work. I explain the challenges I faced and show the DIY prototype. The next step will be to reverse-engineer the Apple C94 connector and make my own PCB with a female USB C port.

I can see an Ifixit style replacement ribbon for older model iphones with usb-c being a real seller. older iphones have great screens and cameras that hold up quite well against even 2021 budget phones so would be lovely to see them kept arround for another few years!

Good job, I hope you're able to miniaturize your circuit. It would be amazing if third parties started selling flex cables with USB C already swapped in instead of lightning, and then you'd just need a custom chassis.

  • @ExploringTheSimulation

Great question thank you. I thought about this when I first started the project but decided not to choose this path for two reasons. 1. The parts were just not available easily at the time 2. I don't believe it would actually have helped in this case as the operating system on the iPad is most likely capable of using the USB protocol natively whereas the iPhone uses the Lightning protocol. This would have probably required a software mod that completely changes the scope of the project. Here we reverse engineer the circuit on the C94 board to do the Lightning - USB conversion for us without having to study it in detail.

Plus, plenty of people use micro SD cards to expand their phone's storage and not necessarily to make file transfers to other devices. That's probably why iPhones have never supported micro SD cards, because Apple wants people to pay more for an iPhone with more storage than let them pay less for the base model then just pay like $20 for an extra 128GB of storage.

I had a 256gb micro sd in my S9+ yeah, I switched from Samsung S9+ to IPhone 13 Pro Max and feel regret. The IPhone is slower in switching to apps. S9+ was lightning fast. No split screen, which I miss. No pro camera settings in the IPhone and I’m not talking about the overhyped useless “cinematic” mode. Low light on iPhone is worse than S9+ . Very grainy. well what’s the purpose of it, in any case the whole lightning connector is nothing else than a usb 2 port so in terms of charging maybe it would help but data transfer still bad, i’m not sure that the chip is just a protocol adapter or is the actual usb2 chip , is worth to check i guess

Looking forward for the same cable replacement for airpods case. It's a lot free space in it and also it does not require data transfer

I've been thinking if someone ever attempted to do this and this is it. PS. Maybe you can take the USB-C port from the new iPads? Been thinking about it as well.

Do you think there can even physically fit a usb c port where the lightning port is in the iphone? reckon you’ll have to dremel a hole?

This is the next challenge. I think it can fit but I will have to be creative. To answer your question, yes the hole definitely needs to be made bigger!
