The Untold Truth Of The Lost Boys

Believe it or not, The Lost Boys was originally supposed to be a more wholesome, Peter Pan-inspired vampire movie. But following the success of St. Elmo's Fire, director Joel Schumacher turned the project into a sexy, gory, and politically subversive teenage classic that changed the way vampires would be portrayed in Hollywood for decades to come. While it still holds up as one of the better vampire films ever made, there's probably a lot you don't know about this cult classic. So grab your leather jacket, hold onto the rails, and check out the untold truth of The Lost Boys...

    shmackatrotsky when I visited Santa Cruz a couple of years ago I was amazed they weren't really trading on the film having been set there. No merch on the boardwalk. No plaques, no statues. When you go into the little shop that was Max's video store it's like the current owners don't realise their little shop was in the film. No merch/ fridge magnets etc for sale. Great town though and totally stoked I got to visit.

    Ive always thought 'The Lost Boys' was more about. drugs (heroin) in my opinion, it just felt like it made more sense, with the story line. For example when Micheal is transforming, for example him staying in bed during the day, his personal hygiene, peer pressure to drink the blood which is symbolic of taken drugs, the lost boys themselves are the dealers and Max is the main head the big dealer/supplier has anyone else ever thought this to be the case? it does not matter because what a classic ... My brother and I must have watched this amazing film over 300 times, we absolutely loved this film, still to this day is one of my favorite films ever. The film industry sure do not make them like they used to.... Peace

    I LOVE this film. It is one of the few vampire films that stays true to the Gothic vision of the vampire as a villain instead of a romantic sex symbol. The film is an excellent balance of horror and light humor, and it’s meta-analysis of the conventions of vampire literature is presented very well. Diane Weiss, Kieffer Sutherland, and the two Cories turn in great performances.

    They made a comic series based in The Lost Boys universe and it apparently tells of grandpa being a vampire hunter as well as vampire himself. He knew who Max was and was trying to find him for years. Being a vampire himself, he ate animals and it's said that that's the reason he has all those trophies in his house. The sax man (formally named The Believer in the comic) is in it too and is also a vampire hunter.

    Actually, I was one of those kids who was hanging out in Santa Cruz when Lost Boys was filmed. I even got to dance around one of the flaming trashcans during the outdoor festival scene for $50 or whatever they paid us (I think it was $50), but I don't think I actually made the cut into the film. But more interestingly was my meeting Jami Gertz one day while the filming was going on. I was on the boardwalk playing around with a bit of jewelry I was working on. It was a small stick with bronze wire wrapped around it, and a crystal wrapped on one end. Jami happened to walk by, and so I said Hi, and asked her if she could guess what it was. She was actually very nice, and we chatted for a minute or two. She didn't guess so I told her it was a 50 Megawatt Interdimensional Thought Laser. We both had a laugh over it and having a good time until ... guess who showed up? Yup. Jason Patric. So he comes storming over and starts yelling at her ... "What are you hanging out with this guy for?!" (you know I was one of the hippies in town in those days, so I was obviously beneath the Stars, blah blah blah). Anyway, he scooped her up and dragged her off, and that was that. Never saw her again. Honestly, I think she liked liked me. :)

    The movie was released in 1987, we can assume this was at least a year after filming. With inflation, the $50 today would be worth somewhere in the region of $113, no one pays extras this kind of money, especially for dancing around a burning trash can for a couple of minutes. Either your memory is waaay off, or I'm calling BS.

    Maryssa Never saw those but it's definitely not the campiest level of a vampire movie. That's for sure. I just saw it and it held up pretty well for the most part. Having comedic moments does not mean it's "campy". Campy is on ta level of cheesiness like Dusk till Dawn had. Lost Boys isn't that campy. Name a specific scene that you think was campy.

  • @TimeKillingFuel

    @TimeKillingFuel

    6 жыл бұрын

    Maryssa Not a girl, just my avatar for my channel but that bad huh? I'm pretty well versed on movies but that example just shows that Lost Boys wasn't all that campy. Just a few moments like I said. Things like bad specially effects is forgivable for the times but bad writing has always been bad writing. Whenever the grandpa made a slight joke in Lost Boys it was silly but not campy. It's something that an actual grandpa would say to his grandsons. However, you take a movie like Tango & Cash where they're having fun during a fight/action scene where they could be easily killed and are cracking cheesy one liners. THAT is campy. Lost Boys didn't do that at all. Every moment they were supposed to be scared they were. Humor and campy don't always correlate. Another perfect example of campy would be 1966's Batman. Nothing more campier than that... unless it's the movies you've mentioned. They did similar shit but in Lost Boys the only real cornball moments really were lines like "death by stereo" after he killed one of the vampires. Something like that. The hair, look and music were just a sign of the times which no movie can ever help unless it's a period piece. Look at Scarface! lol

    A bit of a stretch comparing the gay community to vampires. Especially the people killing, blood drinking type of vampire. Not sure that the latter could be construed as "misunderstood".

    The vampire scene has always had a loose connection with representation of gay communities. Look at Interview with a Vampire as a prime example.

    I never picked that up watching the Lost Boys. I always thought of the girl of being like a sister to some of the guys. It seemed more of a street gang that turned family that turned vampire!

    The director of the film, Joel Schumacher, is actually gay. So there any subtle LGBTQ references in the movie were probably not entirely accidental...

    Grew up with this movie in the bay. Did Santa Cruz a lot. Love love love this movie and watch it twice a year. This movie and the movie The Fog are responsible for making me want to live somewhere on the pch in Northern California. That gloomy vampire vibe is all over the place for me there and I love the shit out of it. Not to mention it's an absolute motorcyclists Paradise. I lived on Maui for 15 years, and I'd rather be in Half Moon Bay despite the froggy year-round 50 and 60 something Degree Days

    My favourite movie of all time! I felt a cool idea for a sequel could have been focused on Michael and Star. With Star (getting) pregnant that night she was with Michael in the cave, and they have a child. Because the child was conceived when Star was half vampire, the child itself is born with vampiric attributes.....

    If they hadn't taken so long to make the sequels then they could have done something cool like a prequel to the first film showing us the lives of david and the gang when they were human and how they became vampires, hell they could have made 4 movies focusing on each lost boy individually or make one about the boys and one about star or hell one about max since we saw so little of the vampire side of him instead of the trash movies that were made with the words "Lost boys" on them. And even if you say trash is a strong word for the sequels that we got...you have to admit that as vampire movies are concerned each sequel as a stand alone movie without the frog brothers side story in them aren't nearly as good as the first movie was.
