The Untold Truth Of The Dark Crystal

Ойын-сауық

Jim Henson spent his life trying to prove that puppets weren’t just for children, and he even had a part in the first season of Saturday Night Live. Sadly, his “Land of Gorch” skits did not blend well with the show at all, but they did catch the attention of Brian Froud, which led to Froud and Henson creating The Dark Crystal. No one quite knew what to make of the film when it first came out, but like pretty much every Henson project, it has a devoted fan base today. The film now has a prequel series on Netflix, so let’s take a look at the untold truth of The Dark Crystal.

    I'd definitely want to see what will happen to Deet. Like, is there a way she can be cured, and could she and Rian actually tie the not? And Seladon needs a redemption arc, and a chance to prove herself as All-Maudra. Or maybe she'll pass it to Brea, who's already done so much worthy of that title. But mostly, I just want season 2 to get MADE!

    The World of the Dark Crystal, is truly epic and amazing, because in part, it is one of the few fantasy worlds that is entirely 100% original. Though there are some similarities, Thra has no Orcs, Elves or Dwarves or Wizards which is SO refreshing and the world envelopes the viewers into screaming for more!

    Gee, I guess I'm not mainstream enough to _not_ dislike "The Land of Gorch!" I found it hilarious---maybe because it reminded me of me and my freewheeling gang of Hippies and drunken partiers of the '60s. I really liked the episode where Skred was involved with "crater-breathers" or whatever they were called (I don't remember---surprise, surprise). At the end of the skit, Skred wanted to see what it was all about, stuck his head into a smoking crater, then asked, "Does anyone have an Orio?" There was also an episode where the king was unknowingly sharing the queen's "favors," and Skred referred to him as "Your Cuckoldness." My only compliant about "The Dark Crystal" was the creatures who were so obviously humans in costumes with impossibly long "forelegs." Other than that, it was quite an amazing movie.

    I'm not a fan of the movie. I rewatched it a couple of years back and eh, whatever. Took till last week for me to be bothered watching the series and I have to say. Wow! What a great show it turned out to be. The sheer amount of effort and obvious love that went into making it was incredibly obvious. The enthusiasm pratically slaps the audience in the face. The thing I was most impressed with was the world building and the little things that made the world feel truly alive. I can't get over the sheer creativity it took. What a wonderful outcome and, though it must have been very expensive, I hope there's a second season. I'm surprised by how attached I became to the characters and I really need to know what happens to Deet.

    The problem with age of resistance is I've seen the film... So I know the gelflings lose. Also it creates some strange continuity errors around the urskeks (now aliens) arrival the skeksi-mystics split and the crystal cracking timelines which really annoyed me.

  • @kaytlinjustis5643

    @kaytlinjustis5643

    4 жыл бұрын

    The thing was, in both the book I own and the movie I've seen, is that the UrSkeks weren't from Thra originally to begin with. Plus, they did a 'beam-me-up-Scotty' after healing Kira and leaving the now, Castle of Light in the care of the Gelflings, so what was told in the series makes sense. However, I agree with you that it's hard because we know the Gelflings in this timespace lose, but it reveals HOW they had lost, and what happened to a once thriving civilization filled with music, art, writing and culture! The UrSkeks made the mistake of tricking Augra to use the Crystal for themselves as a way to extinguish their Dark Halves, and split themselves. Instead of trying to get rid of their darkness, they should've learned to live with it! There can't be one without the other; we have seen what happened!

    Every once in a while you capture lightning in a bottle. Trying to relive or expand the idea doesn't work. Case in point: Casablanca All efforts to make a sequel or TV series fell flat. Sound of Music-THANK GOD no one tried to remake or do a TV series on this. And so The Dark Crystal is this amazing one of a kind film. I didn't want to be disappointed, so I didn't watch the TV series. In that same respect, let me mention the whole Lord of the Rings/Hobbit mess. In the late 1970's there were these two amazing animated features by Rankin Bass productions. The Hobbit was excellently done. Rankin Bass remembered that this was a kid's story, but there was gregorian chanting, iambic pentameter and amazing voice talent. Two years later the entire LOTR trilogy done in 2 hours (labeled The Return of the King) it also had gregorian chanting, iambic pentameter, and amazing voice talent. Enter Peter Jackson The live action films, for me, were terrible. The most disappointing scene was where Eowyn kills the Lord of the Nazgul. When a cartoon has better acting, better dialogue and tells the story better-you have to ask yourself:"Why in God's name did Peter Jackson get away with this crime?"

    I could never get into this series. Not when the Dark Crystal movie came out in the 80's and not with this new series. I just lose immersion whenever I see very obvious puppets bobbing their heads up and down in an over-exaggerated fashion.

    I tried to back in the 80's but something about the puppets' movements just didn't sit well with me. I watched and loved The Dragon Slayer, Conan the Barbarian, Excalibur, and Willow(well I liked it, not loved it) but as much as I wanted to get into The Dark Crystal I couldn't watch it for more than 10 or 15 minutes. I tried watching the new series too but same thing, 15 minutes and I was done. Having a puppet here and there doesn't bother me but an entire show featuring just puppets? Can't do it. Just my hang up I guess.

    @@jtno2 I'd urge you to give it another try. Get to the end of the first episode and then decide. I also found the first few minutes a bit weird - there's a lot of audio narration and it feels SO 80s, but I promise you you forget you're watching puppets and just get immersed in the incredible story. The show is a VAST improvement on the movie. I know there's a lot of TV out there and it can be easy to lose patience with something and give up quite quickly - but this is possibly the best show I've ever seen and worth a second try.

    The Netflix puppets are much too plastic looking. They should have used some other kind of molding compound or at the very least given them some powdery type of makeup to get rid of that shinny plastic look ☹️
