The expansion of the 1982 movie, the return to real puppets & practical effects, the integration of CG to enhance rather than to cut corners or save cost. Somewhere in Heaven, Jim Henson is weeping tears of joy & pride.

ztslovebird definitely . This is a true homage to a guy we should thank for so much - especially in my lifetime. Growing up with sesame street and the muppets. The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. Even the live action Ninja Turtles and Farscape (in spirit). Jim Henson was an incredible visionary and his visions and style is a potent fuel for the imagination. And now The Dark Crystal can inspire yet another new generation.

Yeah. Some theorize it was the Corona Virus that made filming impossible. The show was also very expensive and Netflix wanted an instant return on the investment. They could've just delayed it until 2022. People would've waited.

"Jim Henson often made his films quite scary. He thought it was healthy for children to be frightened occasionally" This is so true. All my favorite movies as a kid scared me to some degree (Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Neverending Story, Gremlins). Children are tougher than you think and need to be challenged, it helps them grow. You can tell modern kids entertainment creators and some parents forgot this. Really shows how society's perspective has changed since Henson's and others' work from the 70's and 80's.

And my own experiences with Netflix has been good I haven't seen anything that's awful in Netflix for mostly I don't watch that stuff. And most of the time I watch reruns of old shows they have. And when they do make orginal stuff that's not Political bullcrap as many have been saying about their bad shows. (But there are some that just fail on everything.)

Looking forward, I don't know if they'll keep any of the original score, that was my desert island album :) the music that made me a musician, I'm so hyped I shared a little homage to the original movie cosplaying and singing Gelfling Song recently.

@@michaelgallimore3707+ Back in the day, a lot of the fun in a movie was wondering how they achieved some fantastic effect. Sometimes is was a single trick, other times it was a combination of trickery. The guy who did the melting head shot in Raiders said he'd do it as a practical effect even today if given a chance. Maybe some CGI for fine-tuning minor details, but that says something.

BonzoDog67 Lizardking you hit the nail on the head. This show uses CGI as an enhancement to the already amazing puppetry, and the combination creates a work of art. Yet the puppetry is still in the forefront as it should be.

I disagree. CGI can do any and everything practical effects can do and more. While I like what has been done here, CGI could have easily done this. That is not to say I don't appreciate the painstaking art of practical effects, just disagree when you state "CGI is not a substitute for practical effects", which is clearly the other way around.

It is incredible how Taron engages in his roles, it is beautiful to just hear him speak and explain what he is involved in, in every way, praising the whole group. He always feels inspired, he grabs everything he sees from the project he gets into and once inspired he gives his best, not only for him, but for the project (or at least it seems that way every time he talks about what he is involved in). It is not surprising that the passion and affection that this actor manages towards his characters and projects ends in characters and projects that are very easy to connect. I hope that the Oscar arrives for Rocketman and I hope the success of this series but I have no doubt that with all this team it will be.

I been waiting a long time for this. The production quality is AMAZING. There are little details everywhere. And they're working hard at world-building and setting up the characters. The environment isn't just a background for a dumb, action-schlock plot to unfold against. Usually, on a production this big, a Hollywood studio puts a producer in charge whose only credit is working on a "Transformers" movie and who meddles constantly with the script to dumb it down. That isn't happening here and it's incredibly refreshing to see.

2:00 That's an interesting point about the voice acting in this series. When you can see the completed scene and your character's performance ahead of time, that probably inspires you in ways that it wouldn't if you were simply doing the voice with no context off a written script (which would be animated later). Here, you can see where everyone else is standing, what they're feeling and what you're supposed to be reacting to.

Besides a slightly slow second act, this was the most beautifully crafted show I've ever seen in my life. The story, the world building, the new clans, the beautiful update on the gelflings animatronic micro expressions and the most beautiful hair, painting, eyes on a puppet I've ever seen. I love rian's character so much. They totally mastered how gelflings are meant to look as brian froud beautiful drawings. Deet was the cutest thing I've ever seen and gurjin was probably my fave. I love a loyal friend with cool dreads. I need season 2 and I need sequels to the original film with jen and kira. I love the comic as well. Your team should be proud! This honestly deserve so much hype

takes 50 years before Jen and Kira showed up and how after the crystal cracked in the world of Thra, the Skeksis were at first friendly/kind to the gelflngs of the world as benevolent and unique beings just like the Mystics aka Urru until one gelfling discovers about not judging a book by it's cover when he finds out that the Skeksis are liars and corrupt with power and greed as a rebellion is forming. Almost like in the movie Demolition Man. This show has an all star cast like the guy who played Elton John in Rocketman, Jason Issacs, Helen Bonnie Carter, Mark Hamil and more even Harry Potter, Star Wars, Game of Thrones stars and more. Plus practical and new effects combined, it looks like a winner of a show even with actual passion behind the project and love for the original movie by the filmmakers and has more in common with Blade Runner 2049 of being a passion project that respects the material and not some halfassed soulless passionless moneygrab insult like Robocop 3, Robocrap 2014 remake, Ballbusters 2016, The Last Straw aka Last Jedi, Alien 3 and other sequels after Aliens, Terminator sequels after T2 and all that. I'm a fan of the original movie for 33 years since i was 4 and a Henson fan and this looks epic! and should be Netflix's Game of Thrones.

What I don't get is if Aughra was around during the Great Conjunction and saw how the UrSkeks were split into the Urdu and Skeksis, then why didn't she warn the Gelflings as to the true nature of the Skeksis? The trailer says the Gelflings were lied to by the Skeksis but that wouldn't have happened if Aughra had warned the Gelflings.
