Pep Guardiola was appointed as Barcelona's new manager in 2008, and what followed was one of the brightest periods in the clubs history, winning a total of 14 trophies, including 2 champions leagues and 3 consecutive la liga titles. Pep's philosophy of Positional play and tiki-taka became the talking point of world football, as they breezed past all their competition. The squad, filled with homegrown talent and arguably the greatest player of all time in Lionel Messi, played with such an understanding that all managers dream of.
While the core of the squad remained consistent, Pep Guardiola would often switch up the formation constantly, varying from a 4-3-3, to a 4-3-1-2 or even a Cruyffian 3-4-3 Diamond, one the likes of world football is yet to see again.
In this video we break down the main tactics behind Barcelona's success, how the formation changed along with their eventual downfall in peps final season in 2012.

Here's the weakness of this system: Pep can always, like ALWAYS, with Barca, Bayern, or Man C, to generate numerical superiority anywhere on the pitch EXCEPT for in the final third. Teams that understand this and stay consistently disciplined inside their third cause a lot of trouble for Pep. In these kinds of situation, Pep must rely on individual brilliance, particularly the ability of dribblers (like Iniesta and Messi mostly but occasionally others like Villa) to beat 2-3 men to mitigate the numerical inferiority. Who can play that key dribbler role now at Man C for Pep? And who could have done so for him at Bayern?

Currently nobody and that is why he constantly adapts his style. At Man City he started with 3 CBs, the following season it was a 4-3-3 with the fullbacks acting like midfielders, then it was a 4-3-3 with inverted wingers... And now he doesn't have a striker so he adapted his style to where he doesn't even need one. That's what makes him brilliant in my opinion. The fact that he never stops evolving and adapting. The issue with Pep for me is that he really does need specific type of players for his systems to work. I mean, that's the case with every coach but especially Pep. But once he has the players he needs he's unstoppable.

Definately !!
I absolutely love this series! Passing down the greatness of past teams to the younger generation so everyone can appreciate their greatness!!
SAF Man Utd team would be nice. You can cover over his evolution from a 442 to a 433 or you can just cover over the 1999 team and 2008 team

Hi Football Meta, don’t forget to include the possible bribing of referees and dodgy decisions
2011- 2014 Antonio Conte's Juventus.
I loved the idea of shadow cover or cover shadow whatever. Putting press while cutting off passing line. Aha moment for me.

Cruyff‘s Barca in the early 90s
Also the influence of Carles Puyol as a personality and Captain. Made a huge difference
What about the underated Maurizio Sarri's 2017/18 Napoli?
2014 World Cup winner would be nice. How Jogi Löw developed german football into more attractive possession game. Hit like if you're interested 👍
Excellent. Suggestion for videos…. Cruff’s legacy at Barca and football. Is Mourinho’s reputation justified? Van der Gall too. Ferguson? Other coaches.
Next team in this serious should be the Man City 17-18 team
Great work! Do a video on Brazil's 2002 WC winning side. Specifically, how their more "conservative" approach made them successful.
Xavi tactics
Man can you please make a video to explain positional play in defense?
Can you do a video on current Barcelona ? I think it will be similar to Pep's Barcelona

Except we play with Inverted full backs now And wide wingers with the Midfilders running into the space created by the number 9 dropping deep It's similar to Pep's current Manchester City side

that's just nostalgia. Wallah Habibi is right that Xavi's Barcelona is more like Guardiola's City than Guardiola's Barcelona. As he said, fullbacks are inverted and our current midfielders are much more vertical and direct because that's how the game's evolved.
Do a United team please. So depressed about them at the mo. Would like to reminisce a bit.
🔥🔥🔥
Can you do Luis Enrique's Barcelona, please
Carlo Ancelottis Champs league winning AC Milan

How pep change mancity into beast....💞💞⚽⚽next topic
Antonio Conte's Juventus, AC Milan in the 2000s. Man Utd in 2008. PSG now
I thinks barca under pep was following the principles of relationism rather than claiming that it used priciples of positional play( May be a nerdy stuff but please give me your opinion on this)
Bayern Hans flick
Sir Alex Ferguson 1999 Manchester United Treble Winning Team
Arsenal Invicibles!!!! As a huge fan of the possession style football, Arsenal best represents that philosophy and Arsene Wenger is arguably the most influential manager in modern day football
