Zonal Vs Man Marking Explained! Which system is better? The eternal debate of zonal vs man marking in football occurs every time a team concedes a corner, however these principles are very much present within open play, with different managers coming from different schools of thought on wether on system is better than the other.
Over the years, the meta in football has shifted from one approach to the other to try and outsmart the opponent, and with each passing decade, managers and players have improved on these systems and have helped contribute to the advanced defensive tactics we see in the modern game.
In today's video we're going to be taking a look at the main differences between the two systems, and why modern tactics have come to the conclusion that a mixture of both is the best solution. To explain these concepts we take a look at two very succesful managers in the modern game: Thomas Tuchel and Gian Piero Gasperini. We also look as some key developments over the years, such as the WM formation, The catenaccio, The dutch Total Football and the 4 zonal marking principles outlined by Arrigo Sacchi, who can be considered as one of the founders of modern zonal marking systems.

what is the name of this big coaching board ?
The #Zonal_Marking. I love that. Why? Because it helps to keep a team solid defensively ✊🏾. I’m coaching a team in our 1st Division here in Belize 🇧🇿 , and that’s my preference.

Hello I'm 16 and looking to join football, I got a question, do I need to know flashy skills to beat defenders if so do I need to know a lot?
I think fully man-oriented (personal) pressing (when all players stick to their opponent and go with them to the end) like one Gasperini uses has major weakness as it can be overcome by individually superior opponent. Personal (or man-oriented) pressing is easier to implement as you dont have to read the game and movement of all players all the time but it can be beaten easier than zonal (or ball-oriented) pressing which requires from players to anticipate and read situation not just sticking with your man. So in a way zonal pressing develops players tactically better.

Thank you, you're a football tactics tank!👏
Very good expained.I like it 😍👍👏👏👏
Hi !! I really enjoy your content. Keep up the great work. I'd really like to know what program you use to generate the pitch, players etc. Thanks in advance !!
If one were better, then everyone would just do it. No choice is without risk, you have to give up something and learn to live with it no matter which choice you make. The real skill is in the choosing of a particular defensive tactic.
You're videos are amazing and your systematic stepwise approach to explain is 💯💯

Slight correction - zonal marking was pioneered (or at least used to great effect) by Zezé Moreira of Brazil much before Helenio Herrera. This was mainly because the diagonal (Brazilian football's version of the WM) led to a transition from the classic back 3 to a half-back joining the defence and becoming a back 4.
I like zonal marking overall with man marking used occasionally for dangerous attackers and set pieces
So which formations are better for zonal and which for man - marking? Is high pressure better with zonal or with man marking?
@FootballMeta

Well it depends on what formation the opposition is playing, but I think as I said in the video, a mixture of both is fundamental. A high press is good with both, but a more aggressive high press such as with Atalanta will usually adopt a man marking system

@@FootballMeta Xavi's Barcelona also uses a man-marking system
Can we see pragmatists vs ideologues?
80% of all goals come from an unmarked player in the shooting arc. Inside your own end, there is no option other than to play man-to-man. Markup or lose.
1st comment Zonal-man orientation is the best though

@Trung Quang however, they're also proof where man marking if not done correctly, could cost the game, take the final ucl madrid vs liv for example, robbo marked modric too high and was outsmarted
@mrnobody1546

@Trung Quang yepp, but marking modric high turns out to be the only goal they conceded. All in all, both are important, one must know when to pressure, and when to zonal-man. Hard to do than being said.
You can only man-mark with the right players. You can look stupid if the player is not up to the job. Zonal marking requires more athleticism. Players must run more.

For sure, I will be covering this shortly!
Both markings are on poin based on how is adopted.
i think man marking is the best the false 9 doesnt matter because if you mark them tight with big and tall and fast defenders you will never concede.
