Nearly twenty years ago the half-naked body of a Thai woman was found by walkers in a remote part of the Yorkshire Dales in England. The autopsy proved inconclusive, and an inquest failed to reveal how she died.
For over a decade her identity remained unknown, her body buried in a grave marked ‘The Lady of the Hills’. The thirty-six-year-old was one of thousands of Thai women who marry foreign men every year. In 2016, after a review, her case was reopened as a homicide investigation. Why is her family still waiting for answers?

"All Thai women dream of marrying a foreigner" To be more accurate I think this sentence should be rephrased as: "Many Thai women in the working class dream of marrying a foreigner" In fact, "not ALL Thais are attracted by the foreigners" especially those who are the middle class and the rich.

Education is important for women (and anyone) to avoid this kind of situation. To be financially independent is so important, no little girl grows up wishing to be bought as a wife or have to look for a random guy overseas to have a better life. If you have money, it is also easier to walk away from an abusive situation

Dear all thai ladies, I’m thai too and I would like to tell you all that if you want to have foreigner husband you have to be able to become independent too. Be able to communicate, to work by yourself for whenever your husband is not the person you think he was or should be, just kick him out and have your own life with your kids. If you can’t do that don’t risk your life with foreigner husband. Life sometimes unpredictable and you have to be able to stand by yourself 💪🏻 as strong independent woman. Husband and wife are equal as a human.

A couple of years ago, I met a young Thai woman (mid 20s) who was living in the UK with her much older British husband (he was in his 50s). He was by no means rich, they rented 1-bedroom flats in cheap towns, she had to commute several hours each way to her job as a factory cleaner, while he was working as a security guy of some sort (he was ex Army). Still, I guess she was happy with the money. She was quite 'difficult' and seemed to have the upper hand over him. I've also met another Thai woman who was on her 3rd British husband, all of her husbands were retired guys, the first 2 ones had died of 'natural causes' and the 3rd one was headed this way (dialysis, stroke etc.). She was on her way to become a millionnaire and definitely not the submissive and docile, or the gentle angel kind, but she was quite a narcissist and quite good at fooling men that she would love them and take good care of them and I guess that it's difficult for men whose health is deteriorating and who are not very mobile to get sex, so getting a Thai wife might seem a solution. Still, I wondered whether she managed to get married a 4th time.

The fact that he would deny her body to be returned to her parents as well. What is he afraid that they’re going to find some clue that ties him to the murder? Surely someone with basic human decency would understand how important it is to her family and allow her to be repatriated. The interview with her mother had me in tears and I’m crying just remembering it. I understand his guilt must be proven but I pray that the UK police have him extradited to answer more questions and if he did it which there in my mind is no indication that he didn’t, that he is brought to justice finally and she is returned home where she belongs- while her mother is still alive!@@joannenugent8495

Please also make this documentary available in Thai. As well as covering more on risks, scams and cases where Thai AND Asian women believe they are marrying up, but in reality being tricked or trafficked by their own partners/husbands. I used to interpret for trafficked Thai women seeking asylum in the U.K or wish to return home. Many of the cases I worked on were women forced into sex trade by their own husbands OR scammed by individuals promising these ladies with jobs abroad. Luckily they managed to escape and got help, but am sure many more aren't so lucky... I now live in Germany and even though I'm trilingual, I can really say life abroad is not easy and as an asian woman, you face a lot of institutional prejudice as well. I'm also in a facebook group for thai people in Germany and every now again, you'll get posts from women seeking help because their husband got aggressive and they managed to lock themselves in a room away from harm. These women had no idea who to turn to, they had no idea which organizations can help. Luckily the thai community are so open to help, and manage to alert the right authorities.

Her husband was so cheap he refused to buy her pads for her menstrual cycle because he was saving for "safari". She was unemployed, couldn't speak German and her stay in the country was dependent on him. This documentary left me with many questions that they didn't answer. Like, was she living with her husband when she disappeared? If so, did he report her as missing straight away? What did she die of? Was her body injured, or was it suicide? I'm sure the UK police investigated the death, so what did they find? The husband did not come across well in the brief encounter they had which doesn't look good for him.

Maybe he was just citing examples of how caring his Thai wife compared to his German wife. He stressed that he didn't ask for her to, but she's observing and do it when it's time. But yeah, that was a bit awkward when there were other examples he could've cited. I have a foreign husband, but I've never trimmed his fingernails or toenails, and he never asked and won't let me do it even if I offered, haha.

    1. Because no one cares about a Thai woman in Europe. Literally no one gives a shit if one goes missing cause most Europeans hold bias towards them. Nobody cares about a foreigner from a developing country, and specially under the current xenophobic and racist climate, where Europeans have never been more negative towards immigrants. 2. The wife of the German guy is a subservient idiot who cuts her husbands toe nails, like a servant, so she can get a comfortable roof tf And then has the nerve to blame what happened to these other women on their luck and quote “love karma”, refusing to see that if that’s so then she should watch out for hers, because she’s made their exact same dumb choice, and were she in Germany with that guy she would have to do way more than clip his dirty, ugly toe nails like a servant. Her story would most probably, and still might most probably, be the same as these women’s, if they move to Germany. So she should stfu, and get off that high horse! Because what she got is what western women would call an undesirable, and she is NOT by any measure any better off than all the other poor South East Asians that marry western guys to avoid poverty. They are ALL married to the devil, every single one of them. 3. True about women and independence. This world’s biggest not so hidden secret is that men need women more than the other way around. Most western females have long understood that, and are happy being and staying single, free and financially independent. These poor South East Asian women still have the world to learn, and are exactly where western women were say 50 years ago. Sad!

The few Thai ladies I know who married farangs are now working harder to raise their families and looked after their lazy or much older spouses. That's the reality. Open your eyes wide. Once overseas, she is completly dependent on the man as isolation sets in. This can be a recipe for disaster, so they need those support groups to enable them to celebrate their own culture etc. It's a sad story for sure and the least he can do is give permision to send her remains home.

If a man truly loves his wife then he should strive to teach her independence when back in his home country. In my opinion crucial steps would be to encourage her to attend English classes, help her to find work so that she has her own money and life experiences outside of the family home, encourage her to find friends especially Thai friends, and help her with anything that prevents her from being isolated inside a house for most of her days. But most of all care for her and love her as a human being. She is not a slave, a servant, or submissive property. Since so many older men marry young Thai wives, I wonder how many have considered what will happen to these younger women when he dies which is likely in most cases. She needs to learn independence before that happens. I cannot imagine how a man can hurt a woman he supposedly loves, let alone kill her. It is beyond horrific to me.

Study history, it’s not exactly difficult to figure out. Western powers have impoverished countries throughout Asia, Africa and South America through trade and diplomacy at gun point. They’ve used their military power as leverage for unfair deals and included whichever rulers they could corrupt by cutting them in while cutting the rest of the population out financially. The result is rural poverty and countries where the ruling elite are more interested in maintaining their power than empowering their own citizens with education. This, as well as western media promoting white beauty standards, and misogynistic ideas about women being only good for marriage and kids, means that many poor people with few prospects see a white husband for their daughters as being their family’s way out of poverty and struggle , seeing as they have few other ways out. Sometimes the idea is pushed by the family, sometimes it is the women who pursue it as they have little to no idea about the legally, financially and socially vulnerable position they will be in when they travel to the west.

It is most sad that poverty pushes women into leaving their families in search of a better life in the West. There was a case on the ID channel where an American Scout leader murdered his Asian wife, dumped her far in the wilderness and told the two children she had returned to her country. It was many long years before her skull was found by walkers and forensics worked with that, building a cast, doing drawings that people recognised and identified. The husband was convicted.

Find association pertains to your country or relates to foreign help that connects to your country. I had many friends helped me to survive here. I connect to the Asian people here in USA to have some support group emotionally. I do have foreign lady friends help a lot too. Just a note as woman of any race or nationality domestic abuse happens to anyone anywhere and we woman have to make sure we can survive if something happen so be carefull out there.

In this case, it is Thai women, but there are many women from many different backgrounds. The way some British men behave once women are in the UK is appalling. The police in many cases, are not helpful to the victims. It is sad, dangerous, and extremely stressful. There is a lot of uncertainty, and women live in fear of having their children taken away.
