Femicide Detectives: 'They keep killing women and it just isn't fair' - BBC World Service Docs

Femicide - the killing of women and girls because of their gender - is the most extreme form of gender-based violence. But many countries do not keep a record of the number of cases - so activists have taken on the task of addressing the problem themselves.

Gülsüm Kav and her fellow activists in We Will Stop Femicide found themselves taking on the role of investigators in Turkey, helping families who suspect femicide and taking on their cases.
In Ecuador, Geraldina Guerra and her Aldea Foundation track deaths and map the lives of the victims, keeping their memory alive to help start conversations around femicide and spark a cultural shift in attitudes.
Produced by Lara Owen, Neyran Elden, Valeria Perasso, Matías Zibell, Rebecca Thorn and Georgina Pearce.
Edited by Oana Marocico and Rebecca Thorn.

Wonderful gutsy woman to stand up and speak for woman's rights. We are weaker physically, however, so much stronger mentally. I hope and pray these wonderful women continue to stand high and continue this much needed fight for justice for women! 🙏🤜🤛

No mention of Africa or Asia? Those need the most attention of femicide than anywhere else globally. I'd appreciate it if these documentaries would not fail to remember there are other, larger continents just as impacted by these things

What in the world does @7:43 mean? Morality and Family structure? How is it this video has less than 2000 views?

I believe they mean the policies they push may cause families to break apart or discourage people from forming families. Stable families are important to the stability of a nation and the well being of the future generations. Kids from broken families are statistically very likely to not develop properly.

@@ablackknight2744 I'm not sure if I follow but thought to respond for clarity on your view. My question was sarcastic. But find the statement in the video @7:43 demeaning regarding the context of the entire content. However, here is my initial response. So women or men looking for healing and protection from their spouse in said family structure should endure till they become another name on the remembrance wall? My opinion is, that if a person leaves a union he or she is not safe ( I mention him because I recently lost a male relative to the 'murdered by spouse' trend about 3 or 2 months ago). If the person leaves the union and seeks help and healing for themselves and their children, the children will come to realize their parents did them a favour by leaving the relationship/marriage before they were killed. Raising awareness about femicide does not mean taking down the marital system. We just ask the systems to place laws in check that protects the lives of their female citizens-who by the way pay taxes and contribute to the same society in one shape or form.

@@chinedum. I think you're assuming that being against a certain group means they're not going to address the problem themselves. Activists hide behind sympathetic causes all the time, but they end up doing more damage instead. Not unlike how criminals use charities for money laundering.

@@ablackknight2744 I see your point of view - social engineering for public sympathy. Well, I understand about activists triggering people to join their causes. However, asking a government or policy makers or whoever the right vehicle should be to keep proper records of femicides, improve on the verdict passed in court over such deaths, and hold the police accountable to verify the cause of death before flagging it as suicide. That is-following the context of this video alone is not about gaslighting or manipulating people to disrupt the marital structure. It's about citizens asking for their rights and holding the right public offices accountable. In this video, I don't recall hearing any threat made by the women. In a scenario, a citizen asks the government to fix a bad road and seeks the support of neighbouring communities who use the same road. Does that make the citizen an activist seeking to manipulate other people? Anyway, to each their own.
