I think it also highlights how perfect the casting is...apparently the only direction they gave the actors for this scene was 'dance how you think your character would dance,' but it gave the audience such a good glimpse into their personalities

This is a fantastic early character study of each person in the show, allowing viewers to get a good look into who they are. And really clever. It's entertaining, but also, informative. Each character here manifests their own personality in their method of dance, and if you only saw this one scene, you'd get a pretty good insight into their nuances. Great directing all around.

I searched for "I Think We're Alone Now" randomly one day because I love the song, and videos for this scene all came at the top of the search results, because season 1 had only come out recently. I watched the video, and I was intrigued enough to turn on Netflix and watch the show. Fell in love with it very quickly.

Yep, this was the moment i fell in love with the show too. You hit the nail on the head with how this one scene, with ZERO DIALOGUE, showcases their personalities perfectly! I love the way this show used music as part of the scenes: a participant, a separate character almost, and not as a backdrop or setting for them.

Klaus dancing with the urn is so appropriate to how their unresolved issues shaped him and stopped him from growing, which isnt dissimilar from Diego Comic Klaus was cool but this show really made his character complex

Each of their dances reflect their characters well. Luther is too big for his own environment (literally in this case), Allison is a glamorous star and showcases her hollywood side in here, Diego is the wild child who closes himself off and is afraid to show his full self to anyone, Klaus is literally dancing with the dead, and Vanya's awkward dance is just like how she feels like the odd one out in her own family.

Wondering if anyone else had picked up on the symbolism of Klaus danceing with his dad ashes. Thought that was a great touch, and as justin clowater said danceing with the dead which i jsut got nice.

If you enjoyed Klaus, you should watch Misfits, there Robert Sheehan plays a pretty similar character (which is the reason I belive this Klaus act like that instead of how he is in the comics)

I feel like if Five were here, he would be the type to simply tap his feet to the rhythm and Ben would be full on break dancing Edit: To those saying that five would be dancing with Dolores, I had considered the possibility and I think it’s a definite possibility.

Poignant how they’re all doing the same thing (dancing) but each of them are in separate rooms. They all want the same thing deep down, but there are literal and metaphorical barriers keeping them from truly being together. Great way of showing (not telling) what their main goal will be for the rest of the show: finding a way to smash those walls and reunite as the true family that they are, outside of their father’s cruel shadow.

Not only that, but also consider the locations that each character is dancing in. Vanya is dancing in the entrance hall, something that hints at the idea that she has very little personal connection to actually living in the house, while Allison and Luther are both in their own rooms. Diego has some connection, but more as someone who is familiar with the place but doesn’t want to live there on a more permanent basis, and also in the opposite end of the house from Luther in the cross section. Klaus is literally dancing underground, given that he’s in the basement, but it’s also dark and filled with mismatching objects, perhaps a connection to his struggles with addiction and death. Their dances can also indicate levels of socialisation, with Diego and Allison being the most comfortable living in the outside world, while Klaus and Vanya the least. It also hints at what each character considers to be important or something that has shaped them; Luther has his ideals (accidentally punching the plane) Allison has the show of success (dance moves that emphasise the importance of the dancer) Diego has his independence and self identity (constantly on the move, running motions) Klaus has his never ending link to the dead (he’s dancing with a frickin urn!) Vanya has the idea of emptiness, that she has always struggled with self expression. A lot of things like this happen somewhat intuitively when building a scene, but all of them are themes that end up carrying in the show, because as Sam said earlier, their dances mimic their personalities.

Notice how Luther is doing the crab? Small detail, but he also did the crab in the season 3 footloose dance-off

I started out a reluctant viewer of this series one episode in , could not get enough .just can't wait for the next season .love it .. out ... P.S. just so everyone knows where I coming from over 60 years young man !!!

Perfect way to show each character’s personality. Showing how they dance when nobody is looking. That’s relatable, for a lot of people, they will never dance in their lives unless they have privacy. And perfect song choice, chefs kiss 😊

Absolutely loved this scene. One of the best scenes in Television I've seen in a long time. Very invocative.

This is not the first time you've watch this masterpiece.

When I watched the first episode, I thought we were just getting a group of resentful moody kids angry at their parents, like so many other shows. I was about to turn it off, then I saw this scene and discovered they actually had a fun side. After this, I was all in.

@@prwstrini9368 I saw it, but thank you very much for pointing the obvious. As you said, the time link happened AFTER this scene. Meaning that Five was trying to kill Kennedy decades before this little dance happened. And that Five was not on Earth (at least as we know so far) when the dance happened.

Vanya's dance is so adorable for me, for some reason. And I definitely dance like Luther.

Diego was killing it

I think the little moment with Diego @ 1:04 solidified him as one of my favorite characters XD Just, a guy who acts all rough and serious but low-key knows he's about to do something goofy and can't have any of his siblings see through his aloof visage. Love that boy!

Although Klaus won this by dancing with his dead dad, Diego went in HARD
