otamendi is surely one of the most underrated players in the world because of the herds of overly emotional football fans who can't separate personality from actual quality on the pitch. like, yeah, he's a disrespectful player overall, but his main job isn't to be respectful, it's to DEFEND, and he's still one hell of a defender, which was proved by this world cup (unbeaten on club level this season, champions league included btw)

When Maguire & Stones were needed most against France, they didn’t step up. Multiple times Giroud kept getting in between them. They had decent tournaments, but can’t be near TOTT shouts.

Very good starting XI in my opnion (some of oyur subs are awfull tho), but you put some players in wrong positions haha. You can't put both Bruno and Griezmann as centremids, they are both attacking midfielders. Feel like you forcing players in this way. It's not a list of best players, it's a team and like this you take away a spot from actual central midfielders.... More importantly it's also just not where Bruno played this tournament, he played right winger... Same with Messi, he played as a striker this tournament.... weird to put him right winger imo. Also would defenitely put Saïss as a centerback over Otamendi. Argentina's defensive have looked so weak and shaky. Only when they played 5 at the back, they were somewhat stable defensively.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I saw that run. He was at my club, PSV for a year and he was probably one of the worst players I've ever seen wear a PSV shirt. Good on him though, love 🇦🇺 after studying in Sydney for a semester.

Chelsea’s champions league win run, in the group stages giroud had the perfect game. 4 goals, left foot, right foot to chip the goal keeper, bullet header, penalty. Got bicycle kick that run also. Great player

@@MrDingDongPong Nah man, you're pushing it way too far. The guy woke up in the quarter finals against England then gave a stupid pen right away. He wasn't good against Morocco where griezman had to cover for him and neither did he in the final where Argentina domined the midfield. Don't get me wrong, he's a good midfielder, but he was not good enough to deserve a spot in the best XI.

Everyone saying if maguire doesn't have his tag everyone will say he was phenomenal.... It's actually quite the opposite I think everyone are overpraising maguire more as a pity.... Not that he had a bad worldcup he was actually decent but to have him as a shout for one of the best defender in wc is just outrageous

I know this is recorded before the final and picking players from all teams is customary when doing the team of the tournament, but, since there are so many different opinions and disagreements over such choices, I think it's safe to say that realistically the team of the tournament is always the team made of the players who played best and most from the squad that wins the said tournament, with the substitutes being the similar players of the squad that finished second, i.e. Argentina's first eleven (subs: France's first eleven). However... when it comes to the coach of the tournament, since the favorites usually finish high because of their players, he has to be the one managing the outsider squad that had the best performance compared to the expectations, i.e. Morocco's coach (asistant coach: either Croatia's coach for repeating a top 4 finish or Japan's coach for eliminating two of the favorites). What they did here (and what FIFA will do as well later on) would be better called "individual performances of the tournament". A "team" chosen like that would have little chemistry anyway.

Maguire was decent throughout the tournament but once again as soon as England played France, a more intelligent player in Giroud got the better of him for the second goal. The ball literally went off Maguire to make it 2-1 but everyone forgot that immediately because of the missed pen.

GKs also have some (Maybe even more depending on the CBs.) responsibility in controlling the defensive lines and if everything work well, they wouldn't face any shots.. and then, they wouldn't be rated higher for that? Everyone put Messi at right winger, i decided to put him striker since that's the position most similar to what he played. Team like this are usually done in a 433, so there is not second striker, only 1... that's why i put Messi there. Where else would you put Messi in a 4-3-3? Its defenitely nor right wing and i really hope you don't think he can play as an attacking midfielder in 433...

@@jordyvanschaik6144 It has anything to do with your statement, if you read them carefully. You said "Messi actually play as striker", which is not true. Messi never sit in opposite defensive line which is the role of a striker, he's always involved in the link up plays, infact he's the main playmaker. Also SS and ST are completely different. RW is his preffered position. Although they put him as right wing he would still have his free role. Never once in the entire tournament Messi played as striker.

@@ardi1606 im not talking about a deep striker, like a number nine. When using the term striker, it just means any type of striker in general. So either a penalty box striker (like Haaland), a second striker, a centre forward, a false nine. All are forms of roles on how to fill in that striker position. You are consufing roles, with position. In 433, there is only one striker position. So wether you are a deep striker, a centreforwards, a second striker or a false 9... all should be put at striker when making a team in 433.....

Good team tbf, only 2 I'd swap are Saiss for Silva & Acuna for Guerreiro

Tchouameni hasn't been good enough, conceded a pen against England, his midfield was dominated in the final, Griezman was playing DM at times against Morocco to help him out, he missed his pen in the final and hasn't been convincing in other games too... He's a very good midfielder but wasn't up to it in this WC. I'd put Griezman instead, and Julian Alvarez up top. Otamendi was very good at times and very bad at others (I'm thinking of the pen given to france that changed the game and some other situations like against the Saudi Arabia), plus his height and lack of strength doesn't help him specially in set pieces and long balls. One can easily put Saiss or Varane instead. Enzo is cool, I'd definitely pick Modric instead (Ounahi and Kovacic are good picks too but Modric wins it for me). I agree with you on Molina, one could pick one of Morocco's LBs (way better than Theo H defensively anyways) but Molina was immense for Argentina (Hakimi was the only one better than him in this tournament) deserves a place for me and him scoring that last pen is the icing on the cake. Other than this, very solid best XI 👍

Maguire was next to Giroud for 7 secs before the headed goal.. He stood there shouting at other players, and at no point marked Giroud.. The only aerial threat as the cross comes in.. That's his basic job.. In the big moment, he didn't even switch on.

@@oscarwebb26 To be fair, Bono did great too and saved all his pens. Saves percentage in game and in pens should matter more. For me, there isn't much difference between the two. It's all down to personal preference

Livakovic is a good choice but for me Bounou of Morocco has to be there they had no business making it to the semi finals and they wouldn’t have done it without him.

So just to be clear Spencer wanted two players from the quarter finalists England (Maguire and bellingham). A team who beat mighty Iran, Wales and Senegal. And only one from argentina, a team who has beaten minnows like Netherlands and Croatia. No wonder the rest of the world always supports teams other than England even when they are premier league supporting fans.

@@stupidusername38 This is kind of dumb - it’s not really a best team of the tournament it’s like you’ve done a list of your favourite players from this tournament - Arguably Livakovic did better than Bonou - Hakimi is fair so is Gvardiol - Dest isn’t a CB so to play him out of position is disingenuous Varane or Otamendi or Saiss should go in for me - Theo Hernandez > Al - Braik, Can’t believe you don’t have Messi and Mbappe in over Mitoma and Davies but the rest is fair although Giroud / Alvarez and Modric / Ounahi is debatable. I’d say Livakovic - Hernandez - Varane - Gvardiol - Hakimi - Amrabat - Modric - Griezmann (CAM) - Mbappe - Giroud - Messi although it’s close between Tchouemeni and Amrabat and Modric and Ounahi. I think having players knocked out in the group makes no sense. It’s clear the players who made it to the semi finals / finals are the best!

@@JohnHolywell yup, plenty of great players mentioned there, it was difficult making a choice. To be fair i haven't been that impressed with Mbappe, we've seen that when teams 2 up on him he'd been marked out of matches. I don't rate Hernandez, i see him and Kounde as the weak links in the France back line. In terms of including players knocked out early on. That would be a bit harsh as you can have good players in average teams, you can see they are quality but the team overall just couldn't do the business. What we've seen is that the difference between the established nations and the less fancied ones is the ability to score. In all other areas they have been well matched.

I agree that Hernandez is way too shaky at the back, and there are some undeserving players in your selection. Here is what I deem as being the best XI : GK - Bounou/Livakovic/Szczesny RB - Hakimi CB - Gvardiol CB - Saiss LB - Perisic DM - Amrabat CM - Modric/Ounahi/Enzo/Bellingham AM - Griezmann RW - Messi CF - Alvarez LW - Mbappe
