I have played both Bass and Drums for many years, and they truly compliment each other in the most vital of ways. The fun tasks of foundation and finding a groove are something both work together on, and playing both has helped me see that in a variety of contexts. Bravo for this!

To me, a lot of it was instinctual--what sounded or just felt good. I could go with either the kick drum, snare drum, or high hat, and usually approached it from a position of less is more in developing a groove. I'm far more groove-oriented than melodic, which others would consider limiting if I was a session player, but it's definitely fun for me as a guy who can't handle more than four strings...😀

I always try to listen to a non drummer who is trying to express something rhythmically. If we all start simple, we can always add or subtract something later. At some point the music will literally play itself. That's when you know you're moving in the right direction!! Always have fun and always share what you have learned!!🙃🥁❤️

This was incredibly eye-opening, as a guitar player, haha...
Ian, bring those tie dye hoodies back if you have any pull, they look terrific.
Speaking as a drummer who plays bass, I've always heard (and seen in most of my bands) that the bass player is the foundation of the tune and the drummer adds color. Really, there's so many different styles and players that it's impossible to nail down one defined job for each. Sometimes the drums drive the tune, other times the bass carries it. Sometimes they both support the piano (but we won't talk about that)
I have always felt that the bass gives the drums color and takes them from solely rhythm to allow more harmony to the rhythm section. Whether your playing with the kick drum, snare, toms or which ever.

An awesome perspective dude!
Good topic. I like that 16th note exercise and hitting the individial notes of the subdivision. Oh yeah bass players, from the perspective of the drummer.. we like LOW end and laying it down. You dont need to be a baritone guitar or overthink it Its a BASS. Everyone else in the band wants a nice blanket of low end to anchor it down. If I had my way. There would only be two strings, no frets above the 7th fret and no treble knob and maybe a mid knob.
as a multi instrumentalist this is dope

Great lesson and exercise, and unfortunately, I felt you were "off" on the in between beats, but you weren't of course, I just couldn't get out of the hitting on a 1 or 4 or 2 or 3. I felt like I can only do the in between beats WITH the other beats, as ghost notes, or whatever. Interesting learning points for me. Great to have a drummer willing to communicate and work together as a unit.
locking in with a drummer, arguably the most important thing.

Think Neil Peart. If you listen to "Rush" you will notice that he had Geddy quite well trained. Nobody was ever training Alex 😂🤣 Seriously though not only was the bass tied to the bass drum(s) but so were the Vocals also tied to the snare. And that is what happens when your drummer is a "real musician" and decides to write the songs. That's going to upset a few drummers!

Do you mean the division by 16? 1 then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 …when you reach 16 go back 15,14,13 until you teach one again.
I'm a bass player and a drummer, too. I used lots of 12/8,"6/8, and odd time. From that's I make it musical, not just boring Rhythms 😴.
the bass gives the drums sustain and the kick drum gives the bass punch. neither can "lock in" if both are all over the place. many bassists and drummers have no idea what their role is. it's frustrating. i'm a bassist. i try to explain to a drummer this concept and i get the" who the f**k is this bass player telling me what to do". bass and drums is a two way street. both drums and bass got to be paying attention to what is going on.
Uhh, Deep Purple got a newbass player and the new guy went up to Ian Paice to introduce himself and Ian just said,,, I lead ,I don,t follow.
its probably not a good idea to have various sized black circle's as a back drop.
Great video. The worst to do to a bass player is to have a keyboardist noodling on the lower register. Please don't.... 😢

ha ha ha! stay away from those upper frets bass players! all the monster riffs live below the 5th fret...
Nope, completely lost me. When the drummer says "to me, the bass players job is ow end and root notes". Yeah, tell that to probably a hundred bass players of note who don't do that.
@ghettostreamlabs5724
Жыл бұрын
No, tell it to the hundreds of thousands of bass players not "of note" who are lost AF.
Snare was where my instinct went immediately, with accent on the kick and high hat. Too much time listening to Rush...
I looks if you're putting in too much effort into trying to look cool, rather than concentrating on the beat... ( BTW that effort was clearly wasted)
To be honest, I've paused the video there cos of all the bands he says this drummer has played with etc, I know who Cory Wong is (not bothered cos massively overrated) and Carley Rae Jepson (ok, but not my bag) but don't know the others. So the "cache" of of naming who he's played with is lost on me. But I'll play the rest of the vid and see what happens.....
