We lost (hold onto your hat) $240k on a full house remodel. Then Covid hit. We filed (and won, with no recompense) complaints with the CSLB and in Superior Court, but the guy was judgment-proof. Only now is our home getting back into reasonable shape. It was awful, and my heart bleeds for all victims of this kind of fraud.

@@thecamillarose9806 Well when you sue people, they actually have to pay you or you get nothing unless it's through an insurance company, in which case the insurance company pays you out. Otherwise, it's a criminal case and the state pays you, which means they will be in jail and you sue the state as well. It's complicated and it all depends on where you live, how you sue, etc. etc.

I’m sending you so much love. I am a designer as well and our firm has had to sue multiple contractors for terrible quality work OR due to half finished work left and never finished. I’m not sure why certain “contractors” feel they can treat folks this way. Unacceptable!! I will say, NEVER pay more than 25% of your contract up front and have inspections done throughout. It should be under $60 to sue. Especially in small claims, You can typically file hardship paperwork and in some states you can file small claim suits for free. You do not need an attorney, You only need to have proof of what you paid and any evidence you have as far as correspondence that you had with the person who promised to do the work.

All the hugs. I get it. I sat here cringing with the images you showed at the start. I’m no contractor, but grew up in a house that was in perpetual repair/improvement. I was my dad’s little helper, so I learned a LOT from him. I’m glad you have found a new contractor. It really does only go up from here. Keep going. I love your style and passion. ❤

I'm so glad things are looking up for you. Situations like those just feel.. so scary. I haven't been in that exact situation, but have had a lot of issues with my home and it just leaves you feeling nauseous and feeling bad all the time. I ended up getting sick and losing my job because of it, so it really does become all-encompassing. Just like for you, it's looking up for me now as well.

Sorry for your losses. Here's a tip if out sourcing in the future... go to a local lumber yard and ask them for references for good contractors. Also, you'd be surprised that about every person has a bad contractor story! I'm glad you shared your story and I hope it helps. And your talent isn't fake. It's part of who you are. And sending prayers for you to feel better. 🙏

Thank you for speaking up about your hardships. It's really rough out here when you aren't starting life with the same resources and generational wealth that a select few have. You are really making the best out of a rough situation and it is so good to see you are prioritizing your health, protecting your energy, and it sounds like you are putting in hard work to heal. I'm sorry that some very awful things have happened, but like you said, you're starting to come out on the other side of it and grow in a more healthy way. Great job and I hope nothing but kinder times are ahead for you!

There´s a part where you mention how you feel like you failed for being in renovation for so long. It´s very natural to feel that way but i want you to know that you are no alone in that!! many members of my family have built their own homes WHILE living in them. Some have yet to fully finish them. Their childhood home was so long unfinished that it had a renovation haha. But they say, that as exhausting as it is, they wouldn´t change a thing. I´m glad to hear that you´ve been doing better and hope nothing but the best to you!! ❤❤❤

My family and I also went through a scammy contractor - had 8 months without a place to live when we were told renos would take a month or 2 max. It's been over a year and stuff still isn't done. It makes zero sense to me how people can just be so careless and inconsiderate and take advantage of people like this. It's hard to think of any sort of bright side or lesson learned, but I can say you must be incredibly strong being able to navigate and get through this as such a young independent. ❤
