Giving my Bedroom a Dark Victorian Makeover (and it's very green lol)

Ойын-сауық

HELLO YES, the home renovation project that I've been meaning to get around to for... 2 years now? OOPS. For my bedroom, we are going DARK. And VICTORIAN. and GREEN. Very green.
Taking inspo from historic photos and houses, I wanted to see if I could transform my kinda boring room into something cozy.
I hope you have fun watching the trials and tribulations and the Great Paint Spill of 2023 (i don't wanna talk about it).
ENJOY!

Really great job! I would try one more time on the Gallery wall. Maybe send your frames and measurements to someone you know from instagram or another artist you admire and let them take a stab at it. Right now it’s good but I could see it being tweaked a little bit to make it even more spectacular.

I'm super scared of painting walls a dark or bold colour because it is so easy to make the room small and oppressive with that but you managed it perfectly (again). I had a small dorm room once with dark red walls and it felt so oppressive, like the walls were coming closer all the time. After it was painted a light neutral colour it was much better. So maybe depends on the dimensions of the room. General rule as I have learned it is that dark colours make a room feel smaller most of the time

I think wrinkles and gray hairs and cellulite tell our story of life. I'm 43 and I'm gonna let all my gray come in without covering it. I'm not gonna worry so much about my cellulite because I don't have enough life left to waste it when I have a partner and family that love me for who I am. Laugh lines and forehead wrinkles show that I've lived and I have enough space to live even longer. Remember it's about the life you lived and not what you look like when it's over that's important. It took a long time to decide this for myself and occasionally those bad thoughts creep back in but I hope I can stay on my path of self love and acceptance and I think you and your life are just as beautiful and worth thinking the same ❤

I have gray hairs at a younger age than might be expected and cellulite too, and I think about the way that these are framed in society often. If I was perhaps told as a kid that they were like pixie dust or scales, I'd be thrilled to think that I'd grow up to be a mermaid or a fairy haha. They really don't have to be these things that we're afraid of!

It wasn’t until this year of my life (28) that I’ve been able to officially decide that green is my favorite color. A simple decision, but it has been a life long debate for me. Ive also only recently discovered that I am very drawn to and intrigued by dark Victorian/academia and have had a hard time figuring out how to incorporate it into my apartment decor. We have some 15 pillows on our king bed, which I think is excessive, but he wanted them ALL, so I said, ‘Okay.’ As far as making your king bed look luxurious and balanced, try placing 3 large European pillows along the back for height. Darker antique gold shams on them will give you a nice contrast with the green and make your gold accents pop. You can vacuum your plastic greenery gently with a brush attachment once a week and that will help keep it nice. I have several large floral arrangements in my house and that really works to keep them nice. 😊

To remove dust, put a pair of pantyhose around the hose of vacuum cleaner and secure with a rubber band. You can vacuum up close to the foliage without suctioning it off of the wall. Also don't use the highest suction setting on the vacuum.

Was about to post our resolution for spilled paint on carpet, too. We dropped an entire gallon of bright blue paint (which split open and almost all of it spilled out) on the carpet in our condo hallway. Tonnes of paper towel (and some sacrificed actual towels), we scooped up as much as we could, then worked on the huge stain. It’s thinnest around the edges, so start at the outside edge and scrub inwards, always keeping the edges wet, so the paint can’t set (interior latex paint is water based. This wouldn’t work with oil based paint). We used plain water and a scrub brush, frequently refreshing the rinse water and getting fresh towels. We borrowed the condo wet vac to vacuum up the (very blue!) water when it got too much, and then finished up with a Rotostatic brand spray on carpet cleaner (designed as a spot cleaner, not the kind for a carpet shampoo machine). This actually saved the carpet, and our relationship with the condo board! I don’t know how Goo Gone would work, but if it’s a huge amount of paint, this method worked well and plain water, a bucket (or plastic garbage can…), paper towels and old rags (or towels), are things everyone has. If they don’t have a wet vac, it would just take a lot more blotting & ringing out of towels. An absorbent sponge would also be useful. Would be even better if it’s not trying to clean up an ENTIRE GALLON of paint. Also, those of us who know what happened, have all talked about how funny it’s going to be when the carpet gets replaced, because we KNOW there’s going to be a huge blue stain on the concrete underneath. 😆

I thought the same thing. Now that she found the color she likes, she could have it matched. However, the process of small-batch mixing and painting with a brush will give it some subtle variations. I was almost going to suggest she could have done a scumble: take two different color paints and mix them directly on the walls: that can achieve an interesting visual texture, which can be subtle to obvious, depending on how contrasting the colors, and how much you blend them. But overall, I think she seems happy with the results, so it all worked out.

For the bed I think the problem might be that it looks a bit 2 dimensional unlike the rest of the room that is just popping out of the walls and for that I thought maybe you’d consider changing the bed crown thing into a circular one so it will be more of “above” the bed rather than “behind” it so it gives it more 3 dimensional look also the curtains will cover a bigger part of the big bed and with the help of the dark curtains it will look smaller and fits the theme more.. and if you felt like you need more sunlight you could just drag the curtains all the way behind the bed and I think that curve of the curtains will give a really majestic look wayyy more than if the curtains were just flat .. I thought this would help, but at the end of the day it’s your own space.. side note: after all of those plants you need to hire someone dedicated for cleaning them .. I have the same concerns as your mother 🌚🌚😂🤍

CAN I JUST SAY that you seem way happier now that you're not pressuring yourself as much and uploading every other friday instead of every week? Your videos are a joy to watch and I've been more excited then ever to seen them pop up on my feed. Love ya Rachel! X

This turned out SO pretty! If youre unhappy with the bed, you could try flipping it around and puttimg it on the wall with the mural. Obviously it would hide some of it (although id hang curtains to make a frame of the mural instead of a bed crown). It would make the large bed look a little less awkward by not being infront of the windows!

For the bed, you could totally make a quilt that matches the vibe of the room that will have designs on it. Could do a big moth in the middle or something. It’d be really pretty

I also think her bed honestly is perfect how she did it. I love thr quilting idea, especially since she feels differently. It's also possibly the too much gene kicking in. (I have it and I understand the drive)

Rachel, thank you. I have heard so many times in my career as an aesthetician that they don't want their laugh lines, crow's feet, stretch marks, or any signs of aging, and it was always so disheartening. You just put it into words. It shows you've lived, and ponody's nerfect.

I just had to comment after seeing the lovely thumbnail: Girl, you are so beautiful, and your designs for your room look like a dream, keep up that awesomeness, because, as within, as without!

Rachel, I went through a “minimalist” phase where I lied to myself for like seven years about my stuff-related habits and needs. I love being in my 30’s and accepting the maximalist rainbow absurdity that is my aesthetic. From one busy wall bitch to another, thank you for stanning the busy wall lifestyle.

Same. I can’t do maximalism with stuff sitting everywhere, but I love maximalism with the walls. My room is covered in art, photos, and shelves. I’m too clumsy to have stuff everywhere on the floor and too much furniture. I like open space but I want to feel like I’m in a museum.

Can you give Nick a giant hug in my name for being so supportive and kind? Like he didn't even sigh, he was just like ok we'll get a new rug! I've never seen someone handle whoopsies so well!

hint for another day :) Water down your black paint, paint it all over the frame, but whipe away excess now and again. The black will stay in the dents and cuts and deeper areas just like dirt and aging. Then you can dry-brush a lighter golden color on top (in the manor you used your black) to highlight ascent details you want more visible :)

Try nail polish remover or baking soda and the spray stuff together , let sit for a bit then blot and rinse.

as someone who lives in a dorm too, carpets, plants and fairy lights make all the difference🌱 i also took apart some of the ugly dorm cupboards and replaced them with crates and covered the rest with big tablecloths :) you got this!! it's a challenge but it is not impossible✨

As an artist and painter of faces I completely agree with you! I love painting all the laugh lines, the asymmetrical eyes, lopsided smiles, and crooked noses. Without all those things there isn't any life or soul to a face. The things that make a person unique are my favorite things to draw or paint because it's what makes them look like them and not just some face an artist put together.

THIS IS SO GORGEOUS OH MY GRAVYY!!! I have some idea’s if you wanted to add to it like you said: if your bed doesn’t feel right maybe it’s the head board, you could try a larger and vinagtage framed one instead :D Also I just feel like bronze-gold crowing for the ceiling would look so cool :) ANYWAYS YOUR THE COOLEST !!
