Sunroom Makeover! || Victorian Treehouse/Jungle Room Inspired

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I FINALLY DID IT, lol. After literal YEARS of saying I wanted to turn my sunroom into a Swiss Family Robinson-themed room, I dedicated a week to the transformation! The sunroom was the room in our house that was the most neglected, and ended up being where we stored junk and trash, and it had such wasted POTENTIAL. I personally love re-decorating videos, so here YA GOOOO.
I love you all!

Fun fact from an architect whose school spent a lot of time on historic preservation - the trim you used to cover up the messy bits of the wood flooring around the perimeter is exactly how it was historically used. They would also always nail it into the wall instead of the floor so that the floor boards could expand and contract from heat and humidity without impediment

My contractor husband was cringing HARD when you hadn't staggered the flooring planks yet and breathed a sigh of *deep* relief once you figured out the staggering pattern. Like, he was so invested. He says, gaps at the edge are inevitable, and trim is the great equalizer. Also, he says, "good job, kids. You can work with me anytime." ;) As an interior designer, I greatly appreciate the touches you added to the space to maintain the integrity of the house while making it truly your own. Well done, my heart is happy!

"Small child who befriends every animal" in the book it was actually the dad who did that. Like sixty percent of the book is literally just "we found this animal and I tamed it and now we can ride it because fuck reason we live on an island". At one point the mom is even like "I love you but wtf" and he's like "no it's fine, it's a local so we can just turn it out to pasture and it'll tend to itself, it'll be fine, don't worry about it". I identify with Father Robinson because I too would see an ostrich and immediately think "how can I ride that".

It’s actually pretty easy to childproof nice rooms, just as long as you don’t have little mouth sized trinkets, all you need is some creative potting so they don’t eat dirt, a fluffier rug or table covering for added protection. There are even ways to diy funky looking child/pet gates using different paints or materials. And the only other worry is glass tables after that. Just a few suggestions as an older sibling who grew up with a little brother and personalized my own space around him. 👍🏼

Aah this is entirely the "1910's explorer" aesthetic of my dreams. Or elegant young things in the 20's, lounging around the bungalow and discussing the murder, or hunting, or something. And hey I have a trunk like that, it's still holding all my old college kitchen stuff, and has been appropriated by my dad to hold the DVD player and Roku and whatever else he's acquired, so I need to steal it back when I need a coffee table again. Yeah, don't paint the walls, the white makes it seem more jungle-ey and bright, like a sunroom should be! (also I totally need one of those liquor cabinet globes in my life.)

That plant looks like a pothos or "devil's ivy" (named for their being extremely hard to kill).

Lol...I scrolled through the comments bc I knew there had to be another plant "nerd" in here somewhere honing in on those plants like I was...and I figured I'd find someone else who also thought it was some type of pothos!!!

Yup, that's what I came here to say too! Pothos! It's also called 'money plant' in South Asia coz it's supposed to bring prosperity. 😌

It is likely Epipremnum aureum, a very common household plant (ours is over 25 years old!). Apparently it is commonly referred to as pothos in english, since it was once assigned to that genus. (I'm not a native English speaker and in my native language it has a different trivial name. I have a hard time matching up common names and scientific names in English, so I can't speak to whether the previous commenters and I mean the same plant.)

Yes! I love them because I only have to remember to water once a week and to prune the dead off of it.

I love love love the way you narrate your dog. "Drive-by mlem" made me laugh out loud. I can't believe you did all this in a week. I wish I could say your motivation helped to motivate me, but I think I'll just watch more KZread.

Yeah the motivation involved is the most impressive to me! We have been in our house for almost a year and after refinishing some wood floors ourselves we lost alllll momentum. But we are trying! My father in law is downsizing and we are getting some cool pieces from him.

I’ve been waiting for this! I want to do this to my living room, but I’m sixteen so clearly, not my house to design. I’ve made my room a time machine though! 1940’s-50’s vibes all the way!
