The TRUTH about the TOPS Tom Brown Jr. Tracker Knife, Let’s talk.

Here I discuss my experience with my Tracker knife, what I have learned about it’s origins, design, purpose, and the controversy surrounding it in a “what you need to know” approach.

    As far as I know, Robb Russon was the original creator of this knife. he, and his son seem to have plenty of proof of this, including signed letters from Tom Brown, and a little blurb in Tom Browns own mailer/student info, where he mentions Robb Russon. The info is out there. Anyway, it's an interesting knife, I like mine, and have played with it for some time now. As knives go, I think it's a lousy knife, but as tools go, I think it's pretty nice...It's a keeper.

    Excellent tutorial. Robb Russon can prove, however, that it was his design, imo. Nevertheless, the provenance is less important now than its function and you are one of the few who actually knows how to use it right. Thanks.

    I took Tom Brown’s 10 day basic tracking and survival course circa 1993. At that time I ordered one of David Beck’s earlier iterations of his design. It was a collaboration between the two. I met David at Tom’s course. I placed my order and wrote him a check for $450. It was a lot for me as a college student. Nine months later I received the knife. He had a large back log. I still have it to this day along with a smaller carving knife and sheath. It’s a heavy, intimidating blade. Kind of a cross between an ax and a knife. The transition curve is even more pronounced than these later versions. And mine comes with double saw teeth on the back side of the blade to prevent binding. I’d be glad to send you pictures.

    I have fingered that style of knife many times, but truth is, it just never in any way felt like anything I ever wanted to use. I am retired military, US Army, Paratrooper, light infantry. 3 wars, and many overseas tours. The knife style I have come to really appreciate is that of the Ka-Bar, SRK type of blade. the weight, size, and ability of the blade is just everything I needed.

    FYI - Regarding purpose of the quarter round that you discuss, not only was it designed to make easy work of producing wood shavings; Tom also said it was for simplifying the task of carving the round shape of arrow shafts. I never tried this, but it makes sense to me in theory.

    Yes of course. If you look at some of Dave Beck’s originals from before the hunted(and some of them afterward) they had arrow straightening holes through the hatchet point. They are very cool.

    I love your take on the Tracker. For me it's seems a very capable tool for primitive skills, I'm drawn toward the basic skills concept than a survival tool, in spite of the overlap. The movie was too much glam for me, I just like the tool for what it is. Wish I could have the Beck too, really liking the primitive blacksmith Trackers out there also. Wishing y'all the best, be safe out out there.

    Good over view of the back story, I have had my T-1 since 2013 it had came with a booklet and in it there is mention of Ed Lombie/sp? & Chip McConnell were 2 Blade Smiths that made the Tracker before Dave Beck, and the Concave section of the spine is a fleshing potion for processing down hide, the hatchet part of the blade is also reminiscent of an ULU.

    BTW not sure if you know there is a tracker knife manual with all the ways you can use it. I believe it is called The Tom Brown Tracker knife operating instructions. It has it place and it was onto something I tried a variant call a parax and I had the mini tracker. I'm looking at the sxb by EJ Snyder. Over all I like larger knives for big work and Swiss army for smaller work.

  • @captainfragger6295
    @captainfragger6295 Жыл бұрын

    Actually the Topps knife is about 310 dollars. The cheapest I have seen them is about 280. I have one and that's what I paid, I also have that other knife you were describing with the stupid hook on the back. It was a hell of a lot cheaper so I thought I would mess around with it. You can buy a leather sheath for about 20 bucks maybe 30 on eBay that fits it perfectly. It comes with a sharpening stone and a small honer rod, and has a loop for a feral rod. I love mine. There are also knockoff knives that are about 20 to $30 that look exactly like a Tom Brown Jr night. They might be a fraction of an inch smaller in thickness, but they do fantastic and it's a great way to see if you like the design or not. That's what I did. I tried out a cheap one and then I bought the expensive one. I carry the cheap one around in my car. If I lose it it's not going to be the end of the world. But it's a pretty robust design and with a few modifications I made it exactly like the $300 one. The knockoff is usually what I let the kids use when they want to make a fire on the beach and they process wood. They are teenagers and they haven't damaged it yet. I saw a video where someone was saying the part you called the Baton saddle is for scraping skins. You laid across your arm and you can scrape them. Personally I've never tried that. And I also don't use the saw as a saw I have used it for notching. I don't like using a knife for a saw too much damn work. I'll take a saw anytime. It might cut a small branch but it's not going to cut anything substantial anyway that you cannot already break or cut like a hatchet. That Tom Brown knife is the most expensive piece of equipment I have. And I have a lot of equipment. In fact sometimes I'm even afraid to carry the damn thing because I don't want to lose 300 bucks somewhere.

    As someone who handled The original medicine blade and who ownes a Beck tracker (#28) I know the Tops Tracker is closest to the original blade. Tops improon on the original saw - it has a singke row of teeth The original blade did not come with a small blade. Dave Beck introduced it around 92-93 ( I have that too, lol). BTW the original 1/4 round was sold as a gutting feature - and I have gutted and skinned my share of deer with my tracker. Giid video Love my Tracker.

    Thanks for the video. The knife looks cool. I’ve seen other people praising it or dissing this knife. Thanks for taking questions. My question is this: Since you said one would have to take a smaller knife for more delicate tasks, like a Mora, why should one take this knife as opposed to a Mora + machete for tropical forests or a Mora + foldable saw for subtropical or even a Mora + axe for very cold regions? Since it’s heavy and I’m supposed to take a smaller knife anyway, why is it better than taking another more specialized tool? I never seen a video explaining the above.

    Well, I would love to try, but if you compare the second knife to the first one, the quality of the second knife is awful, it’s only sharp on the hatchet point, and the saw back is just kind of there, I also have a hard time believing it wouldn’t take a really long time just to heat the leaf spring steel up to a temperature you could shape it with the campfire forge, it would be an awesome test!

    Both Russians, father and son did a video showing documents. Both contend that the father invented it, so it isn't just a case of "some guy who says his daddy invented it". Note that it Appears that the Tops Knife Company had no idea that Brown was allegedly stealing the design and is not accused of dishonesty.

    I appreciate the respectful suggestion, I am aware of the Russons however. Personally I do not believe the letters are legitimate. If his evidence was legitimate he could take Tom brown to court and have it settled there. It would not be difficult to fake letters, and if they had been opened, one could easily stick fake letters into a postmarked envelope with a forged address or even with today’s printing and graphics technology, a completely faked postmark. People have been fighting over this knife for decades, his choice to redesign the knife and ruin it’s ability to effectively do what it was intended to do is much more telling than likely faked letters in my opinion. If he goes through the correct legal and forensic procedures to prove his story than I would happily credit him, even though he was quite rude to me personally, but that’s on him. I state this in a later video of mine here. kzread.info/dash/bejne/p6Kbp6aqoZjXZ5M.html Again thank you for the respectful comment.

    Newbie questions: were both Dave Beck and Tom Brown co-designers on the original tracker? (either separate from Tops or jointly) Lastly, anyone can easily find a plethora of tracker style knives out there based on the original so it begs the question = why didn't Beck/Brown patent their design back in the 80s?

  • @prepareforadventure6247

    @prepareforadventure6247

    Жыл бұрын

    Who designed it originally is a very heated debate. My understanding and interpretation of the available information and knives is that there were a group of people sharing ideas and Beck was the one who refined the ideas into what we know as the tracker knife today. Every original tracker knife I have seen was forged by Beck. He had it trademarked at one point but was injured and had to quit making knives for a while and lost his trademark and Tom Brown had it trademarked in his name at that point and eventually licensed TOPS to make his version of the knife. There are several people still contending to the claim of “the original designer.” I have never seen another primary source knife that was not forged by Beck’s own hands. Patents do expire after a while so eventually that would be a moot point anyways, like Smith and Wesson’s bored-through cylinder someone would legally be able to make a copy at some point. I could not answer directly as to why they didn’t though. Thanks for the questions!

  • @thecrowrains

    @@prepareforadventure6247 good information to ponder; so it reads as if Beck and Brown were slightly at odds coupled by the fact that Brown took it after the former got injured. Sort of a proverbial low blow, but who knows, eh!? Successful businesses can buy expired patents then sue for infringement after twenty years, if they find copycats. One wonders, had the two sketchy friends (based on your description) been more simpatico they could have garnered more control over their original design all those years ago. Either way it's an intriguing backstory; great info that you've shared. KZread has a few blacksmiths forging their own tracker knives so it's as you say public domain now. One of my favorite takeaways from your video on this topic is that the tracker was not originally designed for fighting, as the movie The Hunted depicts! Question: if you were to forge your own would you add any changes? My newbie observation is the tracker takes the utility of the tomahawk/hatchet and blends it with the benefits of the old fashioned hunting knife of yester decades.

However, something strong and pointy is best. That said I've seen some very pointy tracker knives. They would be fine.

    It seems like it's too much in one tool; like a multi-tool-shovel. It's okay at a lot of things, but it's not very good at any of them. I feel like baton saddle should be near the tip and the saw near the grip. The grip needs a guard at least on the finger side. I'm a huge fan of the Cold Steel SRK. It just works. Simple. Elegant. Durable. It's not a great chopper, being that it's a knife. If you need a better chopper, the Ontario SP-5 is a legend. My friends and I jokingly call mine the light saber, though I'm not sure if it's because it's so sharp it goes through anything, or if it's because it's like a small single-edged sword. Of course these are just opinions and we all have our favorites.

    Well, I receive a lot of hateful comments from their followers. The son was hateful and and attempted to intimidate me over the internet. My opinion of them is not very high. Also civil lawsuits do not have to be proven beyond any reasonable doubt like a criminal case, it just has to seem likely. So, if the evidence was legitimate, why are they not taking Tom Brown to court? In the son’s first video making the claim, he revealed his newest version which omitted the baton saddle and replaced it with a gut hook. That completely ruins the purpose of the knife, which is to build fire and shelter. That leads me to believe that he did not understand the purpose of the knife, which the original designer would. Hence, I think they are lying. If they take their evidence to court and prove otherwise then they will receive credit from me. But I don’t believe them, letters and handwriting can be faked.

    Dave Beck did not come up with it. It was a man from UTAH. Tom Brown even had a monthly news letter giving credit to the man with the man’s exact stretch of the knife. Tom Brown then took the knife to Dave Beck who attended his classes and made the knife. Beck modified the design however. Tom Brown years later lied about where the concept came from however their is 100% conformed evidence that he was very dishonest about this. Beck and Tops are now very aware of the truth. It was actually designed for many tasks and fine work but the knife was beefed up after the designer of the knife had his design ripped off. There are even letters from Tom Brown to the original knife maker regarding this specific design. Rob Russon is his name. His son owns UTAH KNIFE WORKS. Great but sad story. Look it up.

    First, people shouldn't negatively comment on something they don't own. Second, it was NEVER in the Hunted. That was used as a sales marketing ploy. The WSK was the knife used. I bought mine back in 2007 and ordered a custom made sheath by Hedgehog leatherworks to replace the square one it came with. Third, Tom Brown has a tracker course in NJ and this knife is required for the course, he designed the knife and there is a lot of instruction in the booklet that comes with it. How to round out bowels with the main blade, using the secondary blade as a draw knife, the half round for making throwing sticks, and all the grips you mentioned for different chopping applications. Also states how the saw back is specifically for making notches for a figure 4 trap.

For splitting firewood and indeed it will chop down a small tree I use the Condor Lochnessmuk. Again it is a heavy blade and has some similarities to the Kukri. For whittling and preparing feathersticks I use a small bowie, not very "woke" at the current time nor on trend in the bushcraft world, but it is what I grew up using. Robb Russon of Utah designed the first tracker & gave it its name. Tom Brown stole the concept, lied about it, & went on to screw Dave Beck & the smith who made the medicine knife, as well. Brown is a liar and a fraud. The only good thing about the whole story is that Brown was able to get the knife into production with TOPS, which Mr. Russon was unable to do. The knife is an amazing tool in the outdoors, and rounds out my top 3 of all time. (The SBK takes first place in my pack, while the Stryker Defender tool takes first place as my edc belt knife.) Anyway, your understanding of the history of this blade is inaccurate, & i encourage you to look into that. The Russon family absolutely does have all the proof they need, all anyone could ask for, to prove that the tracker is a Russon design. That proof includes, among other things, the written admission of Tom brown himself. In fact, Dave Beck was the THIRD smith in line to make such a knife, AFTER Robb Russon and AFTER the medicine knife. Recall, the knife featured in the movie was a Beck blade; Tom Brown went to TOPS after that, not to the medicine blade smith. TOM BROWN IS A POS FRAUD AND LIAR. I'll never take it back.
