3:48 For me, a big advantage of a manual gearbox is that they are far less likely to get stolen. Most criminals see the stick and will pass your car over because they aren't confident that they can drive it correctly.

Great video. Outstanding advice overall - I also have a “hooker” red(guards red) 911 and have noticed the same thing -especially about people parking next to you and also the confusion about what kind of car it is and quickly judging that it must be some super exotic sports car when it’s actually just a 15 year old 911 that’s been kept in good shape.

  • @designingcouture

I’m in CA, and I can guarantee you women know what kind of car that is! We even buy them! 😂. The part about people parking next to you...No words truer spoken! I park my 987 in the furthest parking spot I can, and without fail, someone ALWAYS has to park next to it, not one space over, but right next to it! Drives me nuts! You always cover things that make me a better Porsche owner! Keep up the good work!

  • @Baerchenization

You are doing it wrong :) You need to chose the car to park next to, i.e. something new and/or nice, where you can expect pride of ownership. An owner of a new C class Mercedes won't bang his door in to yours, while an owner of a 20 year old Nissan Stanza probably doesn't care. You already learned that parking at the end of the lot does not work, so chose a "safe" neighbour. Also, parking close to the shop entrance may be better because there are more eyes on everything, so people feel less emboldened to scratch your car etc

Good video. This is a honest video about what you experience when you have a nice luxury sports car. It doesn’t matter if it cost less than a Camry, or a Civic. I actually love bright color cars. I’ve switched to bright color interiors and black/white/grey cars to avoid extra attention.

Totally understand where you are coming from with this video. We had a BMW 535M back in the mid 80’s and it drove us mad how many times we would park it at the remotest part of the parking lot and come back to a dented, grungy Ute parked right next to it. Now we have a Porsche Cayman we are very careful where we park it.

Spot Fucking On. Same way with my '02 330Cica BMW. I have to keep explaining to the new wife, that hey, people will try to run into you, and screw with the car, even when it is parked in a public place. This was true in small town TEXAS, and now in Florida. Preach on, brother!

When I was a kid, I used to wander up to Porsches and stare in admiration. Never did it cross my mind, even at 12 years old, to put my hands on them. They were far less common 25 years ago than they are now, and to me they were unicorns. An inspiration to become successful and have my own one day. Never something to mess with.

As far as I understand, regardless of the insurance we buy and precautions we take when it comes to expensive items, it's wise to never have too much of our relative net worth invested in them since the stress that comes with that can make owning them not worthwhile. You're spot on that things will get better Nathan. We can do it much faster If people realize they should be the ones improving their own lives, instead of hoping some slick talking politicians in a far away big city will (or even can) do it for them. And you're a great example of improving one's situation through using your hands and brain, it's been awesome watching you do it. Fingers crossed that more of your viewers catch this mentality.

The fun comes when you can take your care to a show, a race or an event where it is appreciated because the audience knows exactly what it is . You've made some excellent points about the actual responsibility for what happens when you own one. It becomes a point of attention, wanted or otherwise, and may lead to being a victim of any number of crimes, from minor to life-ending. Yeah, definitely something to look out for. One of the downsides is that babysitting the car when it leaves your garage becomes a full-time responsibility. Like you said, can't leave it outside unattended for too long, sometimes even turning around may merit a surprise whence you look back and see a crowd of teens doing their thing. I think that these lessons are some of the more important ones and I don't see a lot of people talking about them, so thank you for sharing.

Between my 987.2 and now my 997.1 (both my only/daily driver), I’ve gotten predominantly positive attention. Sure there’s idiots who try to race on the highway, but mostly I’ve gotten really genuine people asking about the car (usually “what year is that?”), excited kids waving, and bemused/confused looks when I put groceries in the frunk. Sure, park it in a garage, but otherwise I treat it like a car and people seem to do the same. Great looking 987! I miss the mid-engine platform. Love the torque the 911 offers a bit lower down, but when revved out the cayman was everything I needed driving the twisty roads!

I own a 1978 Ferrari 308 GTS with vintage plates. She’s red. The reaction with the 308 versus my 2014 981 Cayman is completely different. The reaction with the 308 is always positive because she’s now vintage. People know it’s a Ferrari. Nobody has ever pulled along side of me wanting to race….the Porsche experience is completely opposite. I average one person per drive who pulls up along side of me who wants to race…I simply ignore and enjoy the drive and experience. That’s really all one can do I think. Thank you for the video.

This not only left impact marks in the door and - something didn't know before - eggs eat into and discolor the clearcoat and silver paint. Because the car and paint was 100% original this prank left blemishes in the door that materially devalued both the appearance and value the car, over nothing. I mean this is a 30 year old car - not some $150K new porsche - WTF?

Mine is white and it still attracts attention. I can only image what a red or other bright color would bring. True statement, you can park way out in left field and someone will park right next to you. And they will park close, even though there is plenty of room for both us, just craziness! We Europeans used to look up to the US as a culture where people are happy about the success of others, instead of being envious miserably pricks like the norm is over here. It sucks that you guys also caught this mental virus. How's the 986 been treating you? I'm thinking of maybe saving up for one myself since they're so cheap (for a Porsche) nowadays.

@@andyb6851 Happy about the success of others? Here? There has been a real class war going on here for over a decade. Talk of reparations from people who are not guilty to others they never victimized. More talk of redistribution of wealth from those who worked to those who never did. Not from the hyper-rich or political elite, they are driving the narrative. Then, there was always the pretentiousness. Unemployed, by choice, college kids spending $500 a week in restaurants, coffee shops, and bars on credit cards, then demanding forgiveness for their education loans. So many people live beyond their means, in debt to impress others with their material things. The 986 has been very reliable, affordable, and easy to maintain and restore. A pure joy to work on. Very therapeutic to drive.

where I live we don’t have people key your car or do some stupid shit. The only thing is if they see you driving fast they will chase you to a traffic light And blabla blabla. I stopped driving fast during daytime. I drive late night when I want to floor it.

Really sorry to hear those stories.. As someone who lives in a small town close to Munich, Germany and drives an old Porsche myself that is so weird to hear - here its the complete opposite. ppl come by and admire the car and are intrested in the history of it and so on - maybe its just a german thing bc. everyone knows a porsche and they are way more comon around here then in the US I guess. Might be the other way around if you dive an old Mustang around here - but never seen someone trying to scare someone by driving into the opposite road site bc of envy or whatever.. Anyways - awesome video and hope it won't affact ur attiude to ur cars and the fun you have driving it.

Yeah this is the downside to owning a nice car. Which is why I would never buy a brand new car even though I could if I wanted to. Especially when you live in a busy city as I do. Just too many assholes around.

Hello from another fellow Missourian! I live in Portland now and I'm looking at 718 Cayman's.. biggest fear is the people who hate you for driving a nicer car. Lot of homeless, car break-in's, theft and more crime here right now. Kinda makes me want to stick with my ND2 Miata

It's a sad reflection of modern society and true wherever you are to a greater or lesser extent. It encourages me to look for anonymity in cars which is a pity. The US has/had a reputation that people respect and admire quality cars as an aspirational society - "I want one of those some day".

Love your 987.1 in Guards Red and Lobster Claw Rims. I drive mine every day, do my own work on it. It's the best Porsche to own not the 911. I used to consult in smaller towns, and drove my car everywhere. The Cayman is a Rock Star. People love to ask questions about it and take pictures. The BEST part is that I 'share' the car. I let people be hands on and ask questions. I feel REALLY REALLY bad for your channel though. As long as the car has religious 3-5k oil changes the 987 is pretty reliable. Not sure reliable cars are great for content. Get ready for the forum jockeys making dumb comments because they've never owned the car. (I love your BMW channel BTW)

One advice to this dude, upgrade your neighborhood. This video is funny and informational. This happened with me when I am driving porsche, people like to race or show off or overtake you in one lane. WTF is that. When I have expensive cars, I try to make sure the color is not too attractive. Also the hate mentality is there, if you are a woman that means my rich husband is paying, woman can not be rich.

Guards red 987 Literally a over the weekend had a guy turn his Yukon perpendicular to highway road raging because I wouldn’t let him shoot a non existent gap between the middle lane Camry they’re tailgating and myself in the right hand lane going the speed limit… Will have 360* of dash cams installed before next trip for sure. People go nuts for no reason whatsoever. 😂 Thanks for making the vid. It’s a magnet for stupidity as you said.

The negative side of owning a hooker red (i call it midlifecrisis red) porsche... I've been going 5 under the speedlimit and old guy red in the face with anger telling me to slow down, in a parking: last parking spot furthest away idiots parking next to me, I've had people (2times) yell at me in parking lots after starting my car just starting to pull out of a spot, maybe going a couple kms an hour, no other cars in the way... good side: had kids ask to sit in it, people stop and admire, pictures taken, people asking questions etc.. you get a bit of both driving these things
