The Truth About Becoming a U.S. Army Ranger

EP-342 | Becoming a U.S. Army Ranger
We sat down in the Darby Room at 75th Ranger Regiment HQ, Fort Moore (aka Fort Benning) with Sergeant First Class Togami and discussed the history of the 75th Ranger Regiment, the various units within and where they're located, the path to becoming an Army Ranger (both as a civilian and in-service), and more.

35 series here, pre airborne school and pre RASP is heavily 'advertised' while in AIT. If you're up for the challenge the opportunity is definitely there if you didn't get the option 40.

I’m currently awaiting MEPS and hoping to sign an option 40, I’ve had differing opinions on being able to volunteer in OSUT if I wasn’t able to secure an option 40. If they won’t let me sign an option 40 due to a medical waiver, will they let me volunteer in OSUT?

@@Jstaylor679 Yes, every OSUT and AIT will have a 75th and airborne volunteer program. I don't know how OSUT does it but most entry level volunteers do pre rasp PT to help you get more prepped. I don't think a medical waiver would stop you from getting an option 40 though.

While I was in the big army in 2015 I self selected, and didn't think I would make it. But after watching this, boy lemme tell you, it really changed my view and gave me a lot of hope.

Graduated OSUT this past December. SF liaison showed up, Ranger liaison did not. Even though my senior Drill SGT specifically reached out to them bc there were a lot of us trying to secure an option 40 contract, never happened. From my recent personal experience, if you really want an option 40 contract, don’t go to OSUT without one. You might have to wait a little bit longer but it will save you the frustration.

Ranger tabs ... where a person has attended Ranger School and are "Ranger qualified" ... and there is the scroll, with or without the tab, which means a soldier is actually a Ranger, serving in Regiment.

Not sure when Airborne will be, but I've heard there has been at least a 1-2 month delay for other people at my AIT so I expect to be a holdover until at least May, maybe June. Unfortunately there aren't RASP liasons at FSH, otherwise I would've put in a packet as soon as possible. I'm still going to try at Airborne, though. My motivation is of course my health for my family and kids, but also because I’m 35 and I regret not having joined when I was 18. Now I that is all I can think of is losing and joining. My question is, once I am down to weight. Can I still get to Rangers? At my age and having been this heavy, everyone is saying that I have destroyed my body and that main Army is one thing, but my dream of being a Ranger is gone! At this point I am willing to push to body failure, I don’t care. I just can’t live with regret of knowing that I never tried!

Age isn’t a problem yet but it’s kind of cutting it close if you aren’t prior service. I’m 29 myself and served 5 years and got out in 2018. Coming back in as a 35 series hopefully so my situation is a bit different as my prior service years are deducted from my age so in the eyes of the army I’m “24” if that makes any sense

In my day it was Battalion. 1st and 2nd. Less slots, higher standards, a hell of a lot harder to get into. I'm 59 now and can accomplish all the physical tests above minimum standards. WTH

If you’re interested in joining the regiment, it doesn’t matter. Contact 75recruit@socom.mil and let them know. There aren’t many 12Bs in regiment, so they’re not always recruiting at AIT. They’re still around though.
