I was already back in uniform when Brian entered the military in 2009. I went back in at 41yr of age as a reconnaissance team sergeant, nothing does a 40 yr old’s mental health better than being 20 yrs older than some kids and our running them, out road marching them, and out performing the younger generation. I was an ex-1/75th guy back in 1984-85, then to go back in 2007 was awesome. Unfortunately there are somethings that our bodies just can not recover from like a 20yr old kid can. RLTW Everyday.

So what would you recommend a 39 year old civilian. I look about 20 and feel 19 LOL. I was thinking about doing ROTC to get the Ranger tryout program there send me to the school and maybe contract. War is coming.

@@nikitachirich7985 Well if you looking for that, first I would recommend a lot of running. Make sure that you can run at least 5 miles in under 30 minutes, farther distance is better than shorter distances. ROTC is a good option but if you really want to ensure that you get to Ranger School, then enlist with a Ranger option contract. After (if you choose Infantry) basic & AIT, airborne, then you go to RIP everything is at Ft. Benning, then you go to your battalion. Once there you need to prove yourself to your team leader, usually a tabbed E-4, that you are able to do your job and handle the PT. Once you succeed at proving your self worthy, your squad leader will put you in for Pre-Ranger course, this used to be performed at the battalion level training facility back in the day. After passing Pre-Ranger, then you will get your slot for Ranger School and be on your way. Good luck.

Dude man that's awesome! So you were stationed at Hunter back in the 80's? I was there at the same time. I was with 1/24th Aviation, "Vipers strike to kill", I was Armament on the AH-1S Cobra and we phased in the AH-64 Apache in 88-89. I spent several years working right next to the Ranger Battalion, we ate in the same chow Hall. I was truly impressed with the Rangers, serious Badasses and they were definitely feared out in Savannah and River Street 😂😂

I desperately needed to see this in the worst way possible.I just enlisted as an 11X at 30 years old. And my friend who is an Army Veteran, someone who I genuinely looked up to, and who was one the many men that inspired me to take this step, sent me this via text "to think you could compete with 18 and 19 year olds is funny." That was devastating to me, and It absolutely crushed my spirit. But seeing this man performing at this level in one of the most prestigious regiments in all of the military just re-ignited the fire I lost. Thank you, SFC Marx, for being a TRUE inspiration.

An 18-20yr old should be more physically fit and recover quicker but there’s a difference in mentality and you gotta see it as “I wanted this and I can’t give up and got nothing to go back to” and you’ll be fine.

Much respect to Brian Marx. Special Operations is a young man’s sport. The exception does NOT disprove the rule. We are all not created the same genetically. I have been in the Army for 15 years. If you want to go Special Operations DO IT when your YOUNG and STRONG with NO WIFE AND KIDS. 18 to 25 years old is the best time to do this.

What RULE man? The fact that most of the people joining the Army are younger is NOT because older people are NOT fit, it’s like in every job market where most entry levels get filled by young people, and it’s all for the SAME reason, most people kind of start their journey in one direction or another when they are young. So soldiers become soldiers after high school in the same way that accountants become accountants by going to college after high school. Are there any career changers out there? Of course! Do they make the majority? Nope. Does it create a RULE about the right age or a BETTER age? Hell no.

Because we are not low-hanging fruit -- 19-year olds who just want to leave town, sign a military contract no matter the job. We are more challenging for them to get through the process, more work, and so many (not all) recruiters are either lazy or don't want to be in those jobs, or don't know the information required to handle a case like ours and don't know where to look or how to look or they don't have support from their recruiting leadership.

Cool interview and massive respect to Brian going INTO the ARMY at 40!! And as a Ranger no less!! I attempted to go back into the Army after 9/11, but they wanted me to be medical rather than my MOS or direct combat MOS Because I got out in 92 after Shield and I went to Nursing school and received my RN in 97. I believe I was 36 at the time and so I had to get a waiver and closer medical scrutiny. I passed everything with flying colors but they wouldn't allow me to sign up in anything other than medical so I passed. I was afraid that our military would be short on recruits but thankfully there was a massive swell of volunteers and most of them wanted to be Airborne Rangers, 11B, or front line combat troops. I even tried to go back as a 68J like I was before, Apache armament, but they were set on that too. They basically said I would have to go to OCS and more training at Ft. Sam Houston and sign a six year obligation. I already had six years under my belt as enlisted, but I wasn't looking for a career, I just wanted to see some action in the middle East 😂😂. Plus the pay was about half what I was making at the time and they said I would probably end up stateside the entire time. I was disappointed but I understood where they were coming from.

Age absolutely does matter. The body's ability to heal decreases with age, testosterone decreases etc. Eventually mental decline kicks in reflexes slow down and ligaments and tendons tighten up. If these things didn't happen, we'd have 50 yr olds dominating sports. I served in SOF by the way. ALL that being said, our 44 yr old physical therapist made it through Ranger School.

I think his point was that calendar age doesn't matter. Biological age is something else. Obviously, a 50 year old is not at the same level as, say, a 25 year old, assuming simular fitness levels; but there are a lot of American 25 year olds that might as well be 50, their fitness is so bad, and there are a lot of 25 year olds that are physically fit, but might as well be dead, because their spirit and intellect are so full of cobwebs that it makes a tree or rock look like a philosopher warrior.

  • @LibertysetsquareJack

PS: And 40-ish isn't like it's ancient, SOF or otherwise. Look at the 1st Special Service Force in WWII, the forerunner of all modern US Army SOF: could join up through 35, no waivers needed: plenty of older guys in it. Look at the first Green Berets. Look at Merrill of Merril's Marauders; and the British Chindits and their officers. Long before U.S.A. existed, look at what a Roman "principe" was; look up Roman bucellarii; look up Crusaders and enterprising men-at-arms à la Tancred and Roger Guiscard; look up Prospero Colonna; etc, etc.

@@LibertysetsquareJack I understand what you're saying... but even when i went through Basic in the early 2000's... they told us the incident of "stress fractures" was really high because most recruits are staying inside playing games and jacking off to porn. Never mind jacking off lowers your testosterone as do plastics and soy. Todays male has at least a 30-40% lower Test level than that of their counterpart from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Age does matter on the physical end. I'm almost 60, and my grandfather actually served in WW1 & WW2. He was in his freaking 50's during WW2 and had 8 kids already. He was an electrician but he was also patriot. He thought it was his duty to go back in the Army after being out for 25+ years. He had seen hand to hand combat in WW1 so he figured he could go kill more Germans. He was sent back to European theater and he wound up taking shrapnel during one of the battles, but fought on until had to be carried away by his fellow troops before he bled to death. He wound up getting sent home because he had a nerve severed in his forearm and couldn't carry and shoot his rifle. He even tried to argue that he would continue fighting with a pistol and grenades but they said "That's all for you pop's!". He used to say that he volunteered to get away from all the kids and do something less stressful like full on combat with people shooting machine guns at him. He made it home though and went on to live to be 96 years old before he passed. He was a wirey little fella, probably 5'4" tall and 130lbs, and he carried himself like a giant. My family has a really strong history of service for our country and I was able to serve mostly during peace time 1986-1992, I did AH-64 Armament. They just don't make people like my grandfather anymore though. Like I said I'm nearly 60, and although in great condition, I can't imagine doing what I did when I was in the Army now. Don't get me wrong, I'd take up a Post if my country needed me, but I doubt I would volunteer to go back in the Infantry and look for mixing it up on the battlefield just for kicks.
