The True Mythology Behind Troll (2022) + Easter Eggs, References, Folklore & Ending Explained

Фильм және анимация

Netflix recently released a Norwegian thriller called Troll (2022). In a way it's like a follow-up to one of my favorite films, Trullhunter (2010). In this video I will attempt to find and explain all the real-world folklore , mythology , legends and other sources in this film as well as explain the ending, the true meaning and origin of the troll itself. I have a theory that you may have missed.

I was hoping for a sequel to trollhunter. though you could consider this a somewhat spiritual successor. still would like to see a real sequel to both films now.

i would consider this more of a spiritual prequel than a successor, you could tie both movies together by thinking that this incident was the reason the agency was formed in order to control troll population.

Hey StoryDive. I just want to say that as a norwegian i loved you`re video. you explained the folklore and mythology so well and i thought that you pronounced the names and norwegian words well too. my favorite was how you said Dovregubbens Hall. this video made me so happy. i grew up with the folklore as a kid and most of my childhood took place in gudbransdalen where dovre mountain is. many of the places in the troll movie have I had as a playground for me, even lillehammer familypark. i go there almost every years. so the folklore is really close to me and the fact that you talk about saint olaf, peer gynt asbjørn and moe, you made my day. i love both the movies (troll hunter and troll 2022) and i loved your video. thank you. hope your having a great day. from maren from norway.

Thank you! I didn't have time to listen to Norwegians saying all the words aside from in google translate, which is not always accurate. So, I was a bit nervous about getting the pronunciations very wrong. I know that I am saying them with my Canadian accent so they are not perfect but as long as it's not very far off I'm ok with that. I'm glad I hit on most of the major points from the perspective of a Norwegian. I love Norwegian culture and folklore and hope to visit for the first time soon.

Nice attention to detail with the mythological references I don't think anyone's tried explaining the connections as well as the distinct difference in myths that the trolls are intelligent, its the exact opposite canon found in Trollhunter movie before this where the expert says "no they don't do human things like in legend they're just carnivorous animals" and both are logical choices to realities to the myths they're based on as movies. Also I never considered the troll we saw could be the son, I assumed it was the king cause he seems old, tired and lonesome but you can easily equate that to being trapped under a mountain as a child and being awakened in an alien world as an adult, reminded of your family being killed and that its no use doing anything. But I can't shake the idea that we only are spared his wrath because this could definitely be the old king and he's been tempered by experience and understanding of humans, knowing that the bystanders like the father and son were innocents and he was willing to stop and observe the protagonist's father, only accidentally killing him and then showing regret afterwards. Imagine if the second one is the son and he's able to grow much bigger (I feel like people sometimes forget the factor that parents aren't always bigger than their children) and with that has no restraint or empathy to humans, all he's known is humans killing his family and now his father just as he stumbled out into the world. Kind of makes me wish that second troll king rallies more than one troll to want to wage war against humans like in Hilda, another Norwegien inspired show with Troll and human conflict.

I like troll hunter more than this movie because it shows different species of trolls, although what I like about the 2022 film is that although they also want to kill him there's at times the possibility of co-existence and we learn some troll lore... I like the idea of the troll being intelligent and it's sad he's the last of his kind, it's almost fucked up when he dies at the end because all of me just wants him to live. Why as humans must we kill everything rather than understand it? however an intelligent being that is basically what we are to ants... why should he listen to our whims. I feel like I'd like a film about trolls and mythological creatures set in an older time where they're in their prime rather than modern times where we can't learn much about them, to me this misses out and makes them more of a creature feature... like dinosaur's in many modern films. I feel like it would be cool to have a movie that really created it's own world with medieval people living alongside all these folktales, exploring how they lived etc. There would be some fighting but I'd like if it focused more on co-existence than pointless killing. I find movies like that endlessly predictable and to be honest downright boring, it's such a ooga booga brain move like c'mon we can make something more interesting and more creative than this.

There is Askeladden movies with Norwegian folklore, set in an oldtime when we used to believe in fairytales. The creatures are not co-existing with humans within Norwegian folklore, because they are ment to be evil. And I think if we change it to creatures being good, it looses the point, as folklore was used to keep children out of danger. Maybe to you this is "ooga booga writing" but this is our folklore.

I preferred Troll Hunter, I watched it with my son and he thought it was an actual real life documentary that went wrong. The trolls seemed more realistic and dangerous. I was looking forward to the release of Troll, it was a bit comical in comparison like a Hollywood family version, I think the design of the new Troll looked like they had tried to restyle the end Troll in the Troll Hunter film, I was kind of hoping that the new film would of been a continuation into the cinematic universe of the Troll Hunter because that film is one of kind. I believe that there is possibly some truth to the folklore and that creatures like this possibly exist, as well as sasquatch in really inaccessible areas where they can be left alone in peace.

Imagine if the trolls embraced technology, that one troll going against its nature to save his people from the growing hatred of humans. Observing, experimenting and practicing the art of science and coming up with ways to allow his fellow trolls to survive in direct sunlight. All the while perfecting the art of smelting and smithing, developing arms and armor to protect against human weapons. They wouldn't need anything too sophisticated, but it would do them well to prepare for the inevitable. With proper coordination, the trolls' size and vastly superior firepower would overwhelm any human army, and they had thousands of years to prepare. I'd watch that.

Great video and breakdown and I do like the sweeping emergence and acceptance of Christian through both peaceful and violent means is used to explain why the trolls in the film died out to legend or disappeared. We see similar things in many other pegan religions and even in their stories. For instance in Beowulf as he fights Gendal's Mother his own Viking blade is easily destroyed by her only for Beowulf to pick up another blade that is as some historians interpret as being made of Roman origin hence Christian steal is stronger than Viking steal. I just thought the similarities were cool.

Given that it's got a lot of basis on mythology, I kind of wish they'd recognize one particular aspect: the trolls' hatred of Christianity was kind of an accidental thing that was then expanded upon much later. As I understand it, "Christian" for some time was used interchangeably with "human". As such, trolls in the old folktales weren't actually saying "I smell the blood of someone who goes to Church regularly", but rather "I smell a human". Later on, this use of "Christian" to mean "human" fell out of practice, and people reading and adapting their ancestors' tales decided they were literally smelling Christianity and then ran with it.

When you think about it, troll legends probably originate from racism against other human races. But as time goes trolls no longer were hated humans and became fairy tale creatures, because people forgot the origin of the name and they forgot those humans they murdered.

Lol absolutely absurd. You're talking like the old norse were some sort of modern day USA. These myths predated the first viking.

I didn’t like the movie much compared to trollhunter, or any Norwegian movie for that matter. Norwegian movies work best being less modern and more true to old, if they do make another one I hope they actually do something different. Although moving it out of Norway makes no sense

As a Norwegian, i can only say a loud *LOUD* sorry for all the bad acting! I've seen the bad actors spoken in both Norwegian and English, i am so embarest because of it. Because famous *NORWEGIAN* actors nowadays, is Axel Hennie! And i liked him in Hercules, with Dwayne *SMOLDERING* his pants wet, juices are pumping but still, he got outplayed by a mediocre actor from Norway who had a smart buisnisse manager. But heavily masked, only terrifying screams and and a ginger rage that jumped straight at everyone standing straight by, biting and howling like a wolf. That's when you know that you fight against pure nature. 🦍🦧🤘🤘🤘😎
