Nothing wrong with using older technology. “Mad jack” Churchill was a british officer in ww2 who went into battle with a long bow and a sword, because “an officer who goes into battle without his sword is improperly dressed”. Maybe this jedi just thinks that this is what he should be using, because it is the historic weapon of the order.

There are still weapons in the galaxy that can hold their own against lightsabers. And considering The High Republic is a period of expansion, there’s no telling what type of warriors the Jedi would meet on their journeys. Also, we don’t yet know of The Niall’s capabilities beyond their use of lightspeed. Perhaps maybe even some Jedi may go to their side?

I like the Style, and the Ideas of the High Republic. However if they wanted this time to be during that Thousands years of the Republic. This Era should have been 200 years after the New Sith Wars (So 800 years ago) Here's Why. It better explains why the Republic is now exploring the outer rim. Because their re-discovering it after a dark age, and the Fall of the sith Empire, who controlled the outer rim. It also gives more freedom for New character's, Conflict, and lore without it seeming out of place. But despite that I can't wait to read Light of the Jedi.

You're right. And they'd start transitioning out of their cross guards and curved hilts, as there are no more Sith. I'd say 200 years of no war would spark the idea of "we won for good, now we adapt". They must've just started to let their guard down, so it'd be a slow process.

I strongly disagree. It' better for stories like this to explored during superficial "peacetime" because that drives home the importance of political subterfuge within the scope of the Star Wars universe. We saw exactly what the Jedi were like right before the Galactic Civil War -- remember the diplomatic mission Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan undertook at the beginning of TPM? We need more of that, please. Because even during a more civilized age, war is always on the horizon. The High Republic is the golden era of the Republic, but it's on the precipice of collapse. Imagine someone being tasked with designing weapons used by late-Medieval knights, and turning in designs that are more fitting of the Holy Roman Empire instead. What's a French knight in steel plate armor going to do with a Gladius that can't hold an edge? You're right about how it would give the jedi a distinct aesthetic for people to remember. Then why not continue that design if they were banking on that image. Because clearly at some point the Jedi abandoned the cross-guard design in favor for a traditional lightsaber. Maybe it was because they realized that crossguarded lightsabers were not as good at deflecting blaster bolts then regular designed lightsabers. But still the image of the original Jedi would stick in people's minds similarly to how the image of nobility, honor and knights stook in people's minds to this day. (Edit) also when people think of knights they think of long swords, and since knights are connected with honor and nobility long swords are also connected with honor and nobility.

If I remember correctly Stellan Gios was more of a scholar and teacher, rather than an out and about warrior. So it is possible that he deliberately chose an ancient design due to his fascination with history and since he wouldn't actually fight blaster-wielding opponents that often due to rarely leaving the Temple. Which is supported by the fact that he seems to be the only one who uses a cross-guard design while everyone else uses the single-bladed version. Also, is it just me, or has Lucasfilm been kinda hesitant to have the Jedi fight Sith? First Snoke and Kylo Ren was confirmed not to be Sith, now we got the Nihil

Honestly, if I were a Jedi, I would definitely go with a design like this no matter how old fashioned and out of date it is. I think the disadvantage against blasters compared to a guardless saber is overstated. Though, I would make the hilt a bit more oval, rather than just circular. It's a better fit in the hand and allows for better blade indexing. While not important for the cut, and not important at all for guardless sabers, it would matter for the orientation of the crossguards. Oh, and smooth it out, get rid of those ridges. And change the shape of the pommel to allow for a more comfortable grip. Basically just give it a traditional longsword hilt, that projects a lightsaber blade.

I'd be lying if I said this design isn't kinda cool but the time period all this stuff is set in just screws it all up. Like it was said in the video 200 years is nothing in the Star Wars universe, dozens of named species in that universe can easily live up too and well beyond 200 years, technology advances so slowly things should be pretty much exactly the same as they are in The Phantom Menace. Hell, Yoda has been in the Jedi Order and had the rank of Master for nearly 800 years before The Republic became The Empire, he may even be the Grand Master of the Order still with only a piddling 200 year time difference. This High Republic time should have been about 100 years after the formation of The Republic, well before all the corruption and money/power mongering started to seep into the Senate, everyone is still jazzed about its formation with folks being much better off than they were and those that aren't are being reaced out to, the Jedi Order still being the knights in shining armour who helped create The Republic and still have to defend it occasionally from the remnants of the Sith and other criminals.

Looking back on this video after learning exactly who Stellan Gios is and how his lightsaber works, I can safely say that Stellan typically stays in the temple. He likes teaching to younglings, and he would spend a lot of time duelling other Jedi. This means that his lightsaber is often ornamental, and not so usually used against blasters.

I also believe lore may be looking at it wrong, the sith dont exist, but that doesn't mean lightsaber users dont exist. Look at the knights of ren, they werent sith, though they were influenced, but they used lightsabers. So it could factions like that.

The High Republic and Old Republic are most definitely two separate eras, separated by thousands of years I believe. Also, the Sith do still exist during the time of the high republic, though they are still in the shadows under the rule of two and did not reveal themselves. If the Sith did reveal themselves to a Jedi during this time it would break the lore surrounding it, unless they leave no survivors or evidence of course. Also the Knights of Ren didn't use lightsabers.

This could be cool. They could think they’d re fighting a simple group of dark Jedi or ex-Jedi-turned pirate or something, only for the Sith who kept their order alive behind the scenes to be pulling the strings. But the main characters would have to not notice or not grasp that the Sith still existed, for it to make sense with the continuity. I also think this would be a really good era for the Chiss to make their full-scale return to canon. What if, instead of a “full scale war”, there was a short period of a galactic Cold War, with tensions between the Republic and Chiss with some Jedi serving as covert operators and spies? You could even give some elite Chiss soldiers their own versions of the lightsaber or another bladed melee weapon, so that the Jedi anticipating lightsaber combat would make sense. The series could be about the Jedi stopping plots to draw the two powers into a full scale war, with the strings secretly being pulled by a secretive Sith Lord who seeks to cause a destructive conflict without revealing himself and create an opportunity for the Sith to return. It could basically be the Cold War thriller of the Star Wars universe.

Also, with Revan and Andeddu being canon in Disney's lore, it's confirmed once again that the Jedi/Sith conflict goes back for thousands of years before the High Republic. honestly the thing i hate the most about this whole thing is lucas based the jedi on samurai which is why the saber looks like it does. giving it a crossguard makes it look far to European which in itself is not bad but it makes the saber look more midlevel/fantasy and less scifi. the light saber was based on katanas which was a good choice because the unique look of katanas gave light sabers a sorta alien feel to them. now they look to familiar and not nearly as unique. i mean dont get me wrong the saber would be alright if it was a single knights saber and the design was meant to reflect his character in some way. that way it would be unique and the other sabers would keep their unique design. but giving it to the entire order removes the uniqueness of this design and makes all the other sabers less unique aswell. they should have just let kylo ren be the only one with it or have given it to very few jedi during the high republic. maybe only give it to jedi council members as a sign of their station and have the story for why kylo uses one century's later be because he wants to prove he was better than even the strongest jedi and that saber design was the only historical indication that you were one of the strongest jedi. they could have said the reason they got rid of the design was because the council felt that having a symbol of their status was to boastful.

I think the cross guard's ability to fold in makes it potentially a more versatile saber than a standard straight hilt or stand cross guard. You can use either setting depending on the situation, but that depends on whether the writers actually use that idea or not. I think there will be light saber battles in this era just because you can't have star wars without them, the era is a little restrictive but they have plenty of ways to work with it still.

While there were no Sith during the High Republic, as far as the Jedi or anyone else knew at that time, that doesn't mean to say that there were absolutely no lightsaber wielding opponents. Jedi and Sith haven't been the only example of lightsaber wielding, Force sensitive organisations throughout Star Wars history, furthermore, the Jedi of the High Republic were no less susceptible to the allure of the dark side than Jedi of any other time period. I believe it entirely possible that some may, during that time have lost their way, while this may only have been in small and isolated cases it still serves to illustrate the fallacy of stating that there absolutely were no lightsaber wielding opponents in that era.

So, without mincing words, The High Republic sounds like a hot-garbage concept, given when it's set. If these were the Jedi of the formation of the Old Republic? Sure, that'd work great. Have these predate Revan and Bane and so on. But to the topic at hand: If this singular cross-guard Excalibur lightsaber was one of a kind, and was meant more as a symbolic weapon than one used regularly (as this implies), sure, fine. It's a beautiful aesthetic design. But the problem is the same with other cross-guard style sabers as we've seen them; even if the thing was made with cortosis or beskar and could withstand a few lightsaber strikes, the prongs that ignite the cross saber blades is still a vulnerability; hell, even if the Kylo Ren styled lightsaber weren't vents, but actual two small blades, THAT design is more practical in-so-far as you would have to damage the hilt to extinguish them (which is relatively easy to do with these sorts of designs). What would be far more effective is if these blades were more like Kylo Ren's vents, but were angled towards the base of the blade, forming a connected, triangular, and therefore thicker base of the blade. Sure it still suffers from weak point of the end of the vents, but at least then if a strike is made against those inclined planes, it will slide down and away from the center point, and therefore, further away from the hilt and wrists of the wielder, and would still give it that more exotic, but primative broadsword aesthetic they're trying to go for.

I could think of 2 ways the wielder could get around your issues with this design: 1) he could use it in tandem with a lightsaber more suited for parrying blaster fire or a dedicated energy shield, mounted to the wrist or something of the sort 2) this lightsaber change modes with the crossguard allignment into a mode more suited for parrying blaster fire or it could have a full on shield mode. This design could also add more applications like different blade shapes instead of just a straight sword shapes for varying situations

You forget, it’s not surprising for there to be massive explosions in tech that came out of nowhere, an example of this would be the era of Revan and the star forge.

Something that would be very cool as a detail. If he activates the Crossguard only during close combat weapon battles. This way he would take full advantage of the ability of his weapon to fold up.

In star wars, to know if it was long ago or not that long, think this: "Was Yoda alive, in this case yes, 864 (episode 1 age) - 200 = 664." Yoda was alive, and could have memory of that time, so him telling us there wheren't any sith for a long time, means there where non in the high republic era.

It could be a possibility that Stellan adopted the crossguard saber based on personal preference much like Dooku with the curved hilt. And for all we know, Stellan may have had the same kind of ideas that Dooku had in terms of the possibility of the Sith's return.

@Dar-Nak Kallig The way I see it, perhaps there had been cases with Dark Jedi had caused some havoc and perhaps a few of them claimed to be Sith. Perhaps at that point in time, they had some concern about the possibility of the Sith's return before they outright accepted that the Sith were gone.

Bill McLaughlin to me the Dark Jedi thing has more validity than the paranoia of the Sith’s return. The Sith have been gone for 800 years during the druggy Republic the thought of the Sith returning being widespread in the Jedi at that time seems a bit too fast to jump from Paranoid about the Sith returning to the Sith have been extinct for a millennia... The Dark Jedi thing could happen any day of the week if the Jedi aren't careful

as soon as they announced the high republic was taking place only 200 years before phantom menace i thought they just screwed themselves due to the sith not being around at the time. The only way I could see it being good is if they make it where the jedi do find the sith and end up dying before stopping them and Yoda either learns of their existence but thought they were so dwindled down and not a threat he ignored their existence and pretended like he never found out and or he thougt they were dead after he faced themself leading him and the then grand master being the only surviviors and the then grand master saw the strength and heroics yoda did, retired and made him grand master
