Lightsaber Colors and Their Different Meanings

Blue is the most common colour amongst the jedi, and was the original colour within the star wars films. Blue blades are wielded by Anakin Skywalker, Obi Wan Kenobi, Kanan Jarrus, Master Sol, and many more.
The reason why most jedi appear to have a blue lightsaber is because it represents loyalty, honesty, justice, and bravery. This is very similar to what the jedi generally stand for so this makes perfect sense. In Legends, the blue lightsabers were wielded by Jedi Guardians who focused mostly on combat, protection and security.
The second most common lightsaber colour that we see is green. Green Crystals were used by Yoda, Qui Gon Jinn, and Luke Skywalker. Green lightsabers were said to symbolise safety, harmony, growth, spirituality, and empathy. This is why we generally saw green lightsabers being wielded by wiser and more senior members of the Jedi.
In legends, green lightsabers were wielded by Jedi Consulars. Similar to canon, a jedi consular is a jedi who has devoted themselves to the mental aspects of the force rather than the physical aspects. These jedi were deep thinkers and devoted students who would study the meaning and inner workings of how the force worked.
Yellow lightsabers were certainly a bit more rare amongst the jedi. These were wielded by Jedi such as Rey, Jedi Temple Guards, Bastila Shan, and Yord Fandar. Yellow Lighstabers were said to symbolise kindness, goodness, and selflessness.
In legends, they were associated with the third and final class of the jedi, who were the jedi sentinel. Jedi Sentinels were a mix of both schools of teaching, however also broadened their skill and knowledge base through the study of computers, security, repair, medicine and demolition.
Purple lightsabers are wielded by Mace Windu and Darth Revan. The purple lightsaber was said to symbolise those that had a strong connection to both the light and dark sides of the force. The purple lightsaber was said to represent protection, nobility and balance. Interestingly, when you mix blue and red, it becomes purple.
Red Lightsabers are used primarily by the sith and other dark side users of the force. Red lightsaber wielders have included Darth Vader, Count Dooku, Sideous, Darth Maul, Kylo Ren, and pretty much every other bad guy or girl who has appeared in the universe, the list goes on.
Red lightsabers represent anger, hatred, aggression, and power. In canon, the Sith will generally take the lightsaber from a fallen jedi opponent, and channel their anger, fear and hatred into it turning itred. This process is called bleeding.
In Star Wars legends, the Sith actually use synthetic crystals as the red crystals do not naturally exist. The synthetic crystals were said to be more powerful than the naturally occurring ones that the jedi use.
White lightsabers are another incredibly rare crystal seen within the Star Wars universe. The most notable wielder of white lightsabers was Ahsoka Tano, after the clone wars.
The white lightsaber was said to represent rebirth, redemption, purity and victory over the dark side. White crystals were also not known to occur naturally, and could be obtained by taking a red crystal that had been bled by a dark side user, and purifying it through the light side of the force. Essentially the reverse of the bleeding process.
A relatively new addition to the star wars universe is the orange lightsaber. The most notable wielders in the canon universe are fallen Jedi mercenaries Balon Skoll and Shin Hati in the Ahsoka series.
Potentially, these lightsaber crystals appeared orange for similar reasons to Mace Windu’s appearing purple. They represented users of both the light and dark side of the force, but with a preference for the dark side. It is important to note that Baylon Skoll and Shin Hati are not sith, but are in fact mercenaries motivated by money, knowledge and power.
In legends, Orange lightsabers were used by jedi who were unconventional and would often operate outside of direction from the Jedi Order.
Perhaps the rarest of all lightsaber colours was black. There was only one known black lightsaber and that was the darksaber. This weapon was created by the first Mandalorian Jedi Tarre Vizla, and was built over a millennium before the clone wars and galactic civil war took place.
After Tarre Vizsla’s death, members of House Vizsla stole the Darksaber from the Jedi Temple during the fall of the old republic. The Dark saber was passed down generation to generation by his ancestors, until Pre Vizsla was killed by Maul who then technically became the leader of Mandalore and head of the Death Watch.

Guilty admission here... I've occasionally imagined "Adventures" of a Force user making use of European style Epee' fencing with a curved hilt lightsaber. The "Blade" of this lightsaber is a narrow blue blade, but not the blue-white of Canon blue lightsaber blades, but a more subdued shade, almost to the point of azure. For lightsaber-on-lightsaber fencing, he holds the hilt of his lightsaber near the bottom in a classic Old West style pistol grip so his hands are in a neutral position while the blade is perfectly in line with his forearm. Normally. With a quick flick of his wrists, he can whip the tip of his lightsaber blade from one side of an opponents defense to the other, scoring a quick tap on the back of an opponent's hand; a mark of contact that causes enough injury to disable an opponent, ending the duel mercifully and won't run any risk of killing the opponent (and with medical treatments in the Star Wars universe, they can make a 100% recovery in no time) When facing blaster fire (or Sith Lightning), he chokes up on the handle, much like Dooku did, and utilize classic Soresu as he uses Force telekinesis to disarm his attackers. (Like I said, guilty admission here...)

That’s amazing! Hey no need to be a guilty admission - Star Wars offers escapism to all and provides the freedom to imagine it how you want through legends! It makes no sense that the jedi order would wield a rainbow of light sabers. That feels very indulgent and self absorbed, vs the discipline of all wielding the same colored weapon. That feels more suitable to the sith, who are all about selfish expression. Just like it makes sense that it's the sith that would have weird mods like Maul's double-ended light saber. Or wielding two at once like ventress.

:) I knew the colors had meanings, and had a basic understanding of some colors, but learned a ton from this :). It's so awesome how there's much diversity in the type of lightsaber colors and meanings too. Blue is one of my favorite colors. So, it's the one that I choose as a gut reaction. It has a lot of great meanings; I especially like how it symbolizes honesty and justice. I wish I was brave. Green is probably my second favorite color for lightsabers. I love what their symbolism too. The ones who wield them definitely reflect the symbolism. Yellow lightsabers are cool and I think it's neat to see them in Star Wars: Acolyte :) :). Makes sense that purple symbolizes balance and a connection between light and dark. I concur that how its symbolism is perfect given the mix of red and blue for purple. I knew about how Sith wielded red lightsabers and it makes sense how it represents anger and power. Red is a strong color and I associate it with strong as well as intense emotions too. I love Ahsoka :). Rebirth and victory over the dark side all remind me of her in different ways (especially with her arc).. The orange ones are cool also. Shin and Baylen (sp?) are awesome characters. Awesome info about darksaber. Black is also a favorite color for me. But blue is my favorite. I'd hope to get blue :). Awesome video!!

Blue: You are eager for battle and are glad whenever you get to fight against a worthy opponent. However, you still know when to use words and when to use action. Green: You are very easygoing, and you rely more on your connection with the Force than anything else in the Jedi Order. However, you will only use your lightsaber as a last resort. Yellow: You hold a good and pious nature within yourself and have a high level of patience and self-control. You also possess a broad array of skills and a deep understanding of the Force, making you a formidable opponent in both physical and intellectual confrontations. Purple: You feel neither the pull towards the Light or Dark, but you will feel the line between the two underneath your feet. You may have had a past dealing with the Dark Side, but you know the danger and pain that it caused. Black: You demonstrate power and authority over others and your uniqueness in a galaxy and universe of unique beings. Cyan: You are curious and always eager to learn more about the Force, but you still have a high want for action in your life and will probably go out of your way to help others in danger. Should the situation call for words or your weapon, you will be fine with both outcomes. Indigo: You possess a unique blend of intuitive wisdom and diplomatic finesse. This means you excel in situations that require subtlety and tact, often resolving conflicts through negotiation and understanding. Magenta: You have darkness in your past, but you are in harmony with your crystal enough to forgo that past and determine your own future. Orange: You are creative, ambitious, and resourceful in any situation. You have a deep appreciation for beauty and aesthetics, using your blade as an expression of your own unique identity and personality. Bronze: You are powerful and use both physical strength and Force abilities, but you associate with individuals who specialize in negotiation and diplomacy. White: You have autonomy over your own actions as well as being pure, independent, and having inner peace. Silver: You have a very calm nature and have a knack for studying and meditating on the Living Force and how it works. Chartreuse: You are determined and have the ability to adapt to ever-changing circumstances in your relentless pursuit of justice. Red: You have inner rage and eagerness to use your passion to its most powerful, embracing your anger and aligning yourself with the dark side of the Force. Vermillion: You have a sense of destiny and are motivated by power, willing to sacrifice others and cause suffering to achieve what you feel is a better future.

While this isn't Canon, I've long held that the Blue blades are for those who follow Jedi tenants without question, while Green blades are for those in the Order (or not, in the case of Luke), who instead of blindly following the rule of The Order, follow instead the path which The Force guides them (like Qui-Gon). Perhaps your art may lead you through the true Path of the Force, and you'd be a green blade wielder.

I really love the idea that orange is dark side users who haven’t fully embraced or been able to bleed their crystal! What’s your favourite color though?

@@StarWarsNoob123 Yellow lightsabers are wielded by those with a singleminded adherence to what they see as right and wrong. Could orange be wielded by those whose singleminded riteousness (raichusness? Dang, I can *say* it, but I can't spell it!!) leads them to believe they're "Good" and they're blind to the fact that the Dark Side has corrupted their idealisms?

@@jeffanderson8165 potentially! Like a slow and steady decent that even they are not aware of until it is too late. I guess in a way that is how the dark side works - it corrupts over time and different people are coerced in different ways. I have a theory that very few sith woke up one day and decided that hey I’m gonna be evil now!
